Chapter 32: Let her go
The insistent jangle of the alarm clock dragged Kwan out of his deep sleep, jolting him awake. He gripped a light switch, knowing that it was already five in the morning. He couldn't remember much of what happened yesterday.
"Did we have a fight?" Kwan asked himself, noticing Rebecca didn't sleep beside him. "I hope she's no longer mad at me. I miss her more than just her body."
Kwan stretched his arms before he proceeded to the kitchen. He saw Rebecca at the table, blending her coffee. She was wearing a white miniskirt, as she always does. Kwan remembered that dress that his best friend bought for her.
"Would you like to have some coffee?" Rebecca asked as she looked directly at the door where Kwan was.
Her question made him think that perhaps she's no longer sulking about what happened yesterday, so he dragged himself towards her without saying anything and cuddled her from the back.
"Sorry for what happened yesterday," he whispered in a cold voice, sending shivers down her body.
Rebecca didn't say anything, but she didn't let him go either. She didn't know how much she missed his hugs. Now she realizes how important he is in her life—he was the one who saved her from that mafia boss.
"You sound cold; have some coffee," Rebecca said.
Kwan didn't want to let her go. His brain was telling him to remove his arms from her, but he just wanted to stay longer like that, especially since it was cold and he'd really need some warmth.
"Don't you like your coffee?" Rebecca asked, trying to resist as Kwan's embrace grew firmer. "Kwan, you're hurting me. You're hurting our baby."
"Oh, I'm sorry," Kwan apologized as he let go of Rebecca. "I didn't mean to hurt you, especially our child." He sat down on the chair like a submissive boy as he realized he couldn't flirt with her.
"Here, have some coffee first." Rebecca offered him a mug of coffee with a sweet smile on her face. "By the way, you've told me that you're looking for a job, so what happened?"
"It's great. I got a job from an oil company," Kwan replied in a serious tone. "I'll be starting my work tomorrow."
"Do your best, my love, but don't overdo yourself. You don't have to abuse yourself just for money. My parents would like to support us if we need their help," Rebecca said.
"Alright, your father told me that he'd like to grow an alliance between us, but I'm still thinking about it. Besides, I know he's only doing this to get near you," Kwan said in a joking manner.
"Don't refuse him, my love. He probably just wants to know how I am doing. It's been three weeks since we lost communication, though. I wonder how they are doing too," Rebecca replied.
Kwan remained silent for a while as he gulped his coffee. Rebecca enjoys watching him—she even falls in love with the way he drinks his coffee and how it flows down through his throat.
"Why are you staring at me like that, huh?" Kwan asked. "I know you also want to see your father, but you can't convince me through that smile; you should kiss me if you want."
Rebecca couldn't remove the smile from her face as the butterflies began fluttering in her belly after seeing Kwan's exhilarating smile. She was pregnant already; she didn't know how this romantic relationship would end, and she didn't wish it would end.
Kwan put his mug on the table and stood up. His presence grew heavier as he stepped closer to Rebecca. He offered her a hand to stand up. Rebecca held his hand without taking her sight away from his gentle face.
The cold disappeared as Kwan held Rebecca's face and slowly kissed her lips for almost ten seconds. Rebecca held his shirt firmly, as she didn't want that moment to end.
Kwan ended the kiss and held Rebecca's hips, still looking directly into her glimmering eyes. They didn't say anything as simultaneous smiles appeared on their faces.
"I bet you're better than Wen," Kwan said, breaking the silence. "I hope you won't ask me to drive me away again."
"About that. We already had a talk," Rebecca replied.
"So you challenge her to a woman-to-woman talk?" Kwan asked unseriously. "And what happened then?"
"I didn't mean to drive her away though, because I know you would be sad if I did that. But she told me herself she would leave on her own since she doesn't want to listen to our couple discord anymore because she hates arguments," Rebecca explained.
"That funny bunny girl, she still could say that before leaving. She didn't even say goodbye to me," Kwan sighed. "Do you even know where she will go?"
"I don't, sorry Kwan, but she didn't tell me anything about where she will go. I haven't even had a long talk with her because she seemed to be avoiding me," Rebecca replied.
Rebecca remembered what she told Wen last night. She was thinking that she wouldn't understand what she would tell her, but she tried her best to listen, even though it was difficult.
"I already knew your feelings about Kwan, Wen; even if you won't tell me, it's very clear with the way you act. Your closeness shows that you're not just being a friend to him," Rebecca said.
Wen wasn't giving her a glance, but she was all ears to all the things Rebecca would say. She was willing to understand her feelings for Kwan, even if she would disregard her own.
"I'm not tolerating your behavior, Wen; just because you're his best friend doesn't mean that my opinion doesn't matter anymore. I'm still Kwan's fiancee, so if you're trying to ruin our relationship, you better back out," Rebecca added.
"I didn't intend to ruin your relationship, Rebecca. I also know that he loves you more than anything else; he loves you more than me. We've been together for almost ten years, and perhaps it's time to let go. I will leave tomorrow morning," Wen replied.
Wen thought that perhaps Kwan didn't need her anymore. Perhaps he'd totally changed after meeting Rebecca; he was no longer the man who needed her when he was in trouble.
She was sad to leave him after all the troubles they encountered and conquered together, but if it could bring peace and a better future, then she would always treasure their memories.
On the one hand, Kwan felt sad after hearing those words from Rebecca. He's sad that Wen left without even saying goodbye, and he didn't expect that she would be unable to attend his wedding.
"I know you're worried about your best friend, Kwan. But I don't think someone will play with her since she's strong enough—she's strong enough to let go of someone she loves," Rebecca said.
Kwan sat down on the chair by the table and put her hands on the table while looking at the glass that reflected his image. He'd begun asking himself if he really changed or if Wen really wanted to go. Isn't it that she was just forced to do that because she felt like there was no space for her anymore?
He knew what it felt like to be out of place since that's what he felt when he was young. His parents treated him like he wasn't a part of their family, unlike his elder brother.
