Chapter 26 The Voice

“I got it”
“Got what?” asked Benji, almost shouting at Kaien. He did not just raise his voice, his muscles also tensed.
Kaien smiled. “The answer,”
“What answer?” Nathan snapped. He grew impatient waiting for Kaien “What is it? What is it?”

“The past, the truth, and I think the way out.”
“Wow! Really? Really?” Benji was excited. His face all looked excited and worried at the same time. Was he excited or scared to hear the answer? Curiosity beat everything and he asked, “What is it?”
Kaien looked at everyone and swallowed hard. “I’m sorry,” Kaien apologized, which made everyone confused. “I can’t tell you.”
“What? Why not?” asked Nathan, a little panic could be heard in his voice.
He looked at Allen, trying to get the answer from him. “I asked him too, but he didn’t tell me.”
“Ahh. . . I”m sorry,” Kaien apologized again, knowing that he had let everyone down a bit. “I just want to make sure about the answer first. But don’t worry, I’ll make sure all of you get out of here safely. I promise.”
“What would you do to make sure if the answer is right or wrong,” Benji started to feel suspicious about Kaien. There was a chance that Kaien would get the right answer and leave without them. After all, they barely know each other and just met a few days ago. Why would he help other people that he just met a few days ago, right?
“I think,” Kaien paused. “. . .I would go talk to Sean again. If I’m wrong, you three still have another chance to play or try to find a way out. If I’m right, we all could get out together.”
“Oh. . .” Allen, Benji and Nathan said in unison.
Benji tossed the thoughts around in his head, guilty at the thought of doubting Kaien yet offended that Kaien thought to keep the answer to himself and left everyone in wonder. But he still asked, “Why would you do this? Why do you want to help us? We barely know each other. . .”
“I. . . I. . .” Kaien slightly stuttered. “I just can’t leave everyone else. How could someone be selfish and leave everyone else? I just can’t.”
“Kai. . .” Allen felt touched and almost moved to tears.
“It’s ok if you don’t believe me,” Kaien said. “All I ask is to have a little faith. Believe that you would leave this place safely. That’s all I asked and I’ll make sure you leave this place safely. I promise.”
The three of them nodded slowly and said nothing.
“You guys stay here. I’ll be back as soon as I can,” promised Kaien. “But, if I don’t. . . Well, guess you need to read more books. Haha.”
“Haha. . .” Benji let out an awkward laugh, while Allen and Nathan just smiled sadly. They knew what it meant if Kaien did not come back.
“Be careful. . .” Allen uttered with difficulty. He again gazed at Kaien in silence. Allen nodded and left Allen, Benji and Nathan standing there, praying in their heart for Kaien’s safety.
Kaien closed the library’s door slowly and let out a deep sigh. ‘I can do this,’ he told himself, trying to gather his courage. “I can do this,” Kaien repeated, a bit louder but not loud enough to make other people hear him.

He was wondering where he could find Sean. Should he go check at the main stairs again or he needed to go to the gate this time?
Suddenly he heard a voice humming a song. The song and voice sound familiar to him. ‘Sean?,’ Kaien looked around, trying to figure out where the voice came from. He thought, ‘From the stairs.’ Same place when he met Sean earlier. Slowly and nervously, he marched toward the stairs where the voice still could be heard humming a song.
The voice was getting louder as Kaien was getting closer to the stairs. He knew the voice’s owner very well. When he reached the stairs, he just stood there, looking at the voice’s owner. He guessed it right.
“Hello.”
