Chapter 24

I woke up first, but Luke was sleeping too, facing me, his face a little above mine so his lips were exactly on my forehead. I didn't want to make things awkward, so I laid back, closing my eyes like I was asleep.
I heard as he stirred, but didn't quite wake till some minutes later. I heard him give a soft groan as he woke up. He took a few seconds, before I heard him chuckle a little.
His fingers tucked a few strands of my hair away, but then lingered a little, tracing the shape of my brows, then my nose, then my lips. As if he was trying to memorize my face.
I tried hard to stay still, partly not to make him embarrassed, and mostly because I enjoyed the attention, but convincing myself that I was unaware. It made it easier to live in the moment, and not worry about temporality.
Slowly, I felt him move closer and hold my hand a little, his fingers slowly massaged mine, and I heard him chuckle again.
"How is she so beautiful when she's sleeping?"
I fought hard to keep the blush down and I heard him move closer, and then slowly, he left a feathery sweet kiss on my forehead. I swallowed noiselessly, electricity spreading from my forehead through every nerve and sinew in my body.
He moved away, and I could tell his eyes were still on me. Slowly, he removed his fingers from mine and slowly stood up.
I could feel his weight lift off the bed and he arranged the covers over me, then walked away and out of the room.
I waited till the door came to a close before I opened my eyes, a breath finally escaping my lips. I swallowed, trying hard to push down whatever it was I was starting to feel. I believed this was happening because of how we met. The danger, the adrenaline...I swallowed again and got out of bed.
I didn't bring a toothbrush or anything, so I just went downstairs. The scent of coffee hit my nose once I got down and he lifted his face to me once he heard me coming.
"Good morning." he said to me, and without waiting for me to reply, he continued. "I didn't know how strong you like your coffee, and..and if you prefer iced one hot. Tell me."
I laughed at his enthusiasm. I am never really a morning person, and his eagerness felt like sunshine. "Not too strong. And I prefer hot."
"Same here," he said with a smile and turned away. "Did you sleep well? I realized later that I slept off on you."
I nodded. "I slept like a baby. I found it adorable that you slept off like that."
He chuckled. "It's a bad habit." He handed me a cup of coffee. "I'll make breakfast."
"Don't we still have cookies?" I asked him, raising a brow.
"Yeah, we do. I was going to make blueberry pancakes, though."
I nodded. "Right. Let's pretend we don't have cookies."
He laughed again, then turned back to the kitchen counter. "Oh, Karla. I normally keep a spare of everything in the first drawer in the closet. You know, a toothbrush..and everything. You could get it from there and freshen up while I make breakfast."
"Thank you, I was about to ask."
He smiled and said nothing, and I dropped my untouched cup of coffee on the kitchen counter and made my way back up. I quickly brushed and freshened up, but had to go back into the robe when I didn't find my clothes.
"Hey, you know where my clothes are?" I asked, peeking.
He gave a small smile as he set the dining table. "Would you mind wearing an oversized hoodie while I make a quick run to the store for you?"
"But I came in clothes." I whined.
"Sorry. It's in the laundry, and I will get something similar."
I shook my head. "Just get me a comfy tracksuit."
"Will do," he said and finished setting up the table. I sat down lazing around as he freshened up and dressed, then left to the store. He came back with a white and pink hoodie and jogger set, and gave it to me with a broad smile.
I accepted it and went to change. It was a perfect fit for me and I stopped at the mirror to check it out. He did have good taste and I smiled smugly at it.
"Thank you. This is perfect."
"Is it?" he said and came around to draw out the seat for me. "Or does anything you wear just fit you that way?"
He stayed to push the chair back in and stood there.
"Well, I wouldn't say that."
He laughed. "Why don't we check, then?"
He leaned over and removed the hood cap gently, letting it fall on my back. He then moved my hair away, and let it fall over one shoulder.
"What are you checking?" I asked a little nervously.
"I am checking if everything suits you," he laughed, then I felt a cold metal touch my neck lightly. I looked down just as he put the necklace and hooked it.
I looked down at it, and ran my fingers lightly over the cold pendant. It was a beautiful heart with an arrow passing through.
I turned to him, just as he leaned away and went to the other side.
"Why did you..." I started, trailing off.
He smiled. "It suits you. I think everything does."
I could feel my eyes moistening, but I blinked hard, trying to force back the tears.
"Did I just make you cry?" he asked, worry lacing his humor filled tone.
"No, I am just...emotional."
He smiled then helped me in serving my food. "Eat, karla."
I nodded, but didn't take my hands off the pendant. All I could think of was...will I be able to take this back with me?
