Chapter 31

Luke lay cuddled up in the sheets, with my hand in his hair as he rested his head on my laps, a small, sad smile on his face. I still haven't gotten over the kiss and the magical moment after, but it didn't change that his father's corpse was missing.
"Do you..." he started to say, then let out a small breath. "Think my dad could still be alive? Could he have somehow survived by some string of destiny? Is that why his body is gone?"
I swallowed. I wanted to know too. Was he alive? And if he was, where could he be?
"Your father was a good man, Luke. Good men don't end up in bad places. Alive or not. You can trust that."
He smiled, and this time I could see the crinkles in his eyes. "Right?"
I nodded. "You just need to believe it and you will eventually manifest it."
He gave a small laugh. "You sound cute."
My cheeks reddened a little and I shook my head. "I am just saying."
He turned on his back and looked up to me. "Yesterday...I was scared. I don't know of what, but I guess it's that feeling you get when you know you are not exactly holding on to something you want. It could still slip."
He let his eyes meet mine, and then let it stay, knocking the breath out of me.
"I know. I know how that feels." I let my hands pass through his hair again and he closed his eyes.
"Your legs won't feel sore by the time I wake up, right?" he asked, spacing out his words.
"They will, but it's worth it."
He gave me a grateful smile, then held my hand tight, putting it on his chest. I watched as his body slowly eased up, and his breath evened out. He found his peace once he was completely asleep, and I smiled, gently massaging his hair.
I can't answer all the questions of the past or fix every single thing, but I can fix this part, even if in the end, I am the one who will remain with these memories, I will cherish the moments when I can.
I tried as hard as I could to make my cooking noiseless so as not to wake Luke up, but it didn't seem to work, and I found myself clenching my teeth hard whenever I hit a pan too hard, or a fork clattered to the floor.
I rolled my eyes and picked the third spoon to fall, then turned to the steak I was grilling. It at least looked pretty much like the one I was seeing in the video I was watching, so at least, my effort wasn't in vain.
"You said it was worth it," Luke said from behind me, and before I could turn, he had come up behind me, wrapping his arms around me so his hands settled on my stomach, and he buried his face in my neck. "Turns out steak beat me to it."
I gave a small laugh. "You rolled off my laps yourself."
He lifted his head. "No way. I think I sleep prettily."
"No, I think you sleep like an ogre."
He started to laugh and returned his face in my neck. I continued to check on my steak while he just stayed there, his breaths setting my neck and everywhere else on fire.
"Shouldn't you let go? I need to get a plate." I said, cracking up.
He lifted his head again, and turned my face to the side. He met my eyes and his were serious.
"You know how much I like you right?" he asked, his eyes slowly moving to take in details of my face.
I swallowed nervously. I guess I hadn't prepared myself for when he would actually say it.
"You don't need to say a thing. I am just making sure you know." He slowly let me go, then smiled at me.
I smiled back and he turned away and left the kitchen. I let out a small breath once he was gone, my chest finally feeling less heavy.
I needed to say it back, right? Or would he know either way?
I shook my head and grabbed the steak, then turned off the heat. I removed the apron and took the plates back to the sitting room.
Luke wasn't in the sitting room, and I kept them on the center table, then checked outside. His car was still where I had parked it, and I went into the room to check on him.
He was in my bedroom, putting the bed in order.
"You're cleaning up?" I asked with a small laugh.
"You were cooking, so I thought to help out with something."
I put my hands behind me and walked slowly to him. "Aren't you just the trusty one?"
"Housework isn't the only thing you can trust me with," he said and looked at me.
"What else can I trust you with?" I asked, genuinely curious.
"You can trust me with your heart too." he said simply, then turned to dust a pillow.
I grabbed his face and turned him to me, ignoring the surprise in his eyes. "You can't just say something like that and act like you didn't."
"Huh? I was just..."
I went on my tiptoes and kissed his lips, and his eyes widened even more.
"Can I still trust you?" I asked, meaning it more than he knew I was.
His surprise quickly dissolved, and he wrapped my arms around me too, pulling me close.
"I am not the type to go back on my word so easily." he said, his hands pushing strands of hair back and tucking them behind my ear.
I said nothing more and I guess he took it as his cue, then pulled me further, his fingers slowly caressing my cheeks.
I closed my eyes as he leaned in and slowly kissed me, his lips gliding effortlessly against mine, his other hand holding my waist and moving slowly against my shirt.
This time, I broke free first, my chest heaving with lack of air. He smiled, leaning closer.
"I don't think I like you." he said, his smile small, his fingers soft against my skin.
"Then?"
"I am in love with you."
