I caught my breath slowly, Luke watching me like I would dissipate if he didn't watch hard enough. "Stop looking at me like that." I said, turning to open the door. "I don't really know, Karla. I feel like you are hiding things from me. Come to think of it. You kept crying the other day too. I just wish you would want to share it with me." He followed me in, then dropped his coat on the couch. His eyes were still fixed on mine, and I knew he was waiting for an answer. "Well, okay. I am an overthinker, and sometimes, I just keep entertaining what ifs and...things that make me cry. I am sorry if that worries you." I lowered my head a little, hoping my little act of guilt would convince him. "When was the last time you went out, though?" he suddenly asked, a small chuckle in his tone. He probably found me adorable and just the thought made me redden. "Well...when I came for the wake." He nodded. "How about we spend time outside? The best memories are made outside, you know." Best memories? Do you mean the memories that will sting like crazy later on, Luke? I nodded despite myself. "I will get ready." He smiled warmly and I ran to the shower to get ready. I wondered what his outside entailed, but just to be safe, I opted for long knee length flowery gown, one that spoke of gaiety and love you can only feel once, a woven hat and a pair of sneakers. I looked like the typical teen going on a first date to a roadside ice cream stall, and it made me laugh. I sometimes can't believe I should be 25. I went out to show off my dress to Luke and he looked so positively surprised. I turned around, then spread my arms. "How do I look?" He thought about it for a while. "Like my date for today?" I laughed and he held my hand, walking behind me till we got to the front porch again. I closed the door while he waited. "We are gonna dump the car later, but the place I have in mind is a little far off." he said to me and I nodded. "You are my guide for today, so whatever you say." He smiled and opened my door, then ran around to the other side of the car. I watched him turn on the ignition, and I leaned on his arm. It was a convertible, and opened up the roof. I immediately ditched my hat to feel the breeze in my hair. He tried hard to focus on his driving, but would sometimes look over at me, smile, then go back to driving. We finally got to the large park, and he closed the car up. He came around and let me out first. "Let's take a bike. We can go around this trail." He showed me the tarred road trail and I immediately nodded. He held my hand and went to the bike rentals, then got me a knee pad and helmet. He didn't want the helmet cause it apparently made him unable to focus. I got ready and got on the bike. It was a little hard at first. I was never the adventurous child, and even if I was, it was years ago. Luke helped me get a hang of my bike first, then got on his own, following behind me. After a few minutes, it was pure euphoria. Luke was by my side, holding my hand as we pedaled together, the breeze in my hair, Luke's hand gliding on mine. We could be the perfect teen romance. That was until I heard the loud honk of a car. I turned around, but Luke seemed to not pay any heed. He had let go of my hand and was lagging a little behind, trying to do something to his bike. It looked like his bike had suddenly stopped, but right behind him was a car. "Luke?" He looked up to me, smiled, and continued what he was doing. The car was getting closer and at this point, all I could hear were the loud honks. "Your husband died in a car accident..." "We are sorry to tell you this but...." I closed my eyes against the loud sounds in my ear, and got off my bike, the world around me spinning violently. I could still see Luke there, his attention fully on his bike. "Luke!" I yelled. This time he looked up to me, his eyes a little wide. He slowly stood, as if trying to access the situation. But I was already running towards him. My bike fell on the floor behind me but I couldn't care. Luke's eyes grew bigger as I ran to to him and suddenly pushed him to the side, standing in front of his bike and the car subsequently. Luke gave a small, surprised yelp, then held my hand as a last resort as he glided down the small lush green glass slope, forcing me to come down with him. Together, we fell down the small slope, and only stopped once we got to the end. Luke was breathing pretty hard, his eyes still wide from surprise. "Karla. Are you okay? What is wrong?" he was almost breathless, and I turned to where the car should have been. It wasn't a car, but another bike that might have installed a car honk sound, and the owner was standing there too, just as confused as Luke. "Why did you do that?" Luke asked again. He helped me remove the helmet and propped me up to him, then sat right in front of me. "Luke, I....I thought it was a car. I thought it would run you over...I thought I was going to lose you. I swear, it was scary. I thought I was going to..." I couldn't finish before breaking into tears. He brought me to rest on his chest, snd I could feel his rapid heartbeat. He had probably been just as scared for me as I had been for him. "Hey, it's okay. It's fine." He leaned away to look at me. "You are not injured, are you?" I shook my head. "I am sorry for ruining our date." "Shhh....we will just walk, okay? We won't take a bike again. Don't worry. Okay?" I nodded, as his thumb glided over my face and he pulled me up to a sitting position. He waved at the man who was still waiting above, signalling we were okay. He turned to me, then smoothed my hair. "We will just take a long walk. Okay?" I nodded solemnly, and held his hand tight, scared of having to let go.
