Finally, Mr. President haughtily stood up adjusted himself and said. “ Uka my young professor and friend, I have heard new and old voices of those who are against us and those with us in our race to claim our right and mandate as the ruling party. We are together in this great party because we have something in common which we share - to keep the unity pillar and keep firm hold our diverse yet decent interest, and to also hold the power at the top as long as we can. Remember the condition for your appointment. Remember your oath of secrecy and vows before many eyes here. I take people by their words. They are still living witnesses. I should want you as your mentor earlier said to be your self and expect people and their many speculations. Don’t make me hate you and I should not like that. You are still young and promising. Whosesoever that thinks his skull is bigger than that of all of us should be ready to meet our heroes and political ancestors in their grave. That is the language of politics. As people that share the same goal and aspiration, we want to fight to fix ourselves at the most strategic positions in the country’s posts and beyond. We make rules that as matter of fact should govern this nation. We say what should be done and when it should be done, for that, with the veto power vested upon me by this great party and the immunity accorded to me by the constitution as the Commander in of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic and lord over the ruling party, that you should not allow any politician in whatever party, that was against my continuity agenda and that of my colleagues, who did anything directly or remotely against it to smell power through election. This is no time for election but selection. You should know that this order should be carried out as fast as possible.” The hall stood silent. Few eyes blinked but no one talked. The moment was a time for silent and brief eye contact. As he threw them into more suspense with that order, his foot soldiers were sent out. “I don’t wish to waste more time debating on this issue. We will have to look out for more brave-some persons that will carry out this order with renewed zeal and sense of accomplishment.” The option chose by His Excellency did not come through until three months to the primaries. Uka had been forced down to his own will to accept in secret the deal to keep and remove anyone from his list. He was the toast of admirers in who believe in what university foreknowledge could offer. His personal data as inflated by his colleagues was an intimidating compendium of superlative achievement.
Mr. Ribadau and few others were the beneficiaries of deserted gallery, to earn from the many leakages of fund and waste budgeted for the election. Vying for the seat of vice president would not matter. While others were anointed Mr. President the worst enemy, they made themselves his close aides. Despite side talk and regular absentism of the more reputable one on the arena, they remained to worship the little god made up of flesh and blood. Those who remained knew that, at that time, their political influence was on the wane or at worst they could be picked up. Within brief minute of suspense and silence, brought into the hall was Ben. The man who have remained silent all his life in the party’s plans to uproot qualified candidates to replace him. He was the least expected man in the night gathering. Shock and disbelieve kept them freezing for a time before they paid attention for an introduction by the president. “ We have had along day and night in this matter. We should be happy that much has been said and agreed on. Here is Ben a trusted person who we know too well in this country as our own. We must fully give our support. He is the man we have endorsed to go for us. He is to be followed by Mr. Ribadau who has contributed his quota to the salvation crusade of our party” he announced. That was all he could say for that night. It was a blow and shock to Mr. Ribadau and his fans. Everyone had hoped that he anointed man for the green-honed after Mr. President was Mr. Ribadau. He needed the seat through any available means, if it would mean removing the president. So, his selfish ambition altered the equation against him. Mr. Ribadau who had thought otherwise on Mr. President decision that he would serve for more years of his usefulness with Mr. president, but suddenly he was offloaded from his list. Mr. President was never a person to be trusted in anyway.
