Chapter forty

"You don't have to keep saying terrible things to people! Don't you know that this man here is human too? He has feelings." She said.
I just stood there watching them exchange words with each other. I don't even know what to do next.
The worst thing is that I was so lost in their fight that I totally forgot how hungry I was.
"You know what?! Since his dirty self and clothes are what is troubling you..." she said.
The woman turned to me and completes her sentence.
"...Go to the bathroom and take a shower!" She said.
Uh oh. Ain't no way I'm getting into this one.
"Oh really?" The man said.
"Yes really." She said.
"Fine! Do whatever you want but don't say I didn't warn you." He said.
He opened the front door and then slammed it shut behind him after leaving the house.
The woman sat on the sofa and sighed.
"I'm sorry you had to see that. We aren't really like that. It's just that he gets pissed off whenever he I let a stranger in." She explained.
"No problem madam." I said.
"The shower is this way." She said.
She stood up and walked up the stairs and I followed behind her.
I know I said I found a small house. But I wasn't really lying. This is the smallest house I could find. All the houses are huge.
She stopped in front of a particular door and gestured me to it.
She went back down the stairs and I let myself into through the door.
I firstly looked at myself in the mirror and trust me, her husband wasn't wrong about me. I was truly a mess. I'm surprised that she even let me in. She really has a good heart.
I took off my clothes and entered the shower. I turned the switch and cold water touched my body. It ran through every section. I just stood there with my eyes closed.
This was the first time in a long time that I actually felt a coolness in my mind.
I washed my body with the soap and allowed the water to rinse me off.
Once I was done, I cleaned my body with a towel and wrapped it around my waist.
I went back to the same mirror and looked at my face again and there it was. My face was back. That same face I had at eighteen was still the say face I had now.
Why didn't my face change all these years.
I shaved my beard and underneath all that hair was the exact same face.
I looked for my clothes but couldn't find it.
Where are my clothes now? This better not be some sort of a prank. I hate being messed with!
"If you are done showering there is a new pair of jeans and a black T-shirt on hanging on the door. Put it on." The woman said, from down the stairs.
I put on the outfit and walked down the stairs.
"Wow!" The woman said.
"I never knew there was someone this handsome hiding under all that dirt. You look great!" The woman said.
"Um... Thanks... I guess..." I replied.
"Are you hungry? There is soup in the kitchen. You can have that." The woman said.
"Sure. Thanks a lot. Which way to the kitchen?" I asked.
"Don't worry about that. I'm the one to bring it out. Not you." She said.
"She stood up and went to the the kitchen. After a minute or so, the woman came out with the soup and a glass of juice.
All that was in a tray and she dropped it on the dinning table. I left the living room and went to the dinning where I sat and ate.
The front door opened and her husband came in.
Her husband's eyes met with mine and his facial expression changed. He came straight to where I sat and started his complaints.
"Oh no, not another one Helen. Twice in one day? Are you kidding me?" He said.
"What do you mean?" She asked him.
"Don't play dumb with me Helen. You know very well what I mean." He said.
"No. I actually don't." She replied.
"Why did you bring another person here? Wasn't that bag of garbage enough for you? Do you really need to add another person?" He asked.
"I didn't bring anyone else." She replied.
"Really? Then who is this?" He asked and pointed at me.
"He is the same person that was here when you left to God knows where." She replied.
"You have got to be kidding me." He said.
"It's true. And if you don't believe me, you can ask him." She said.
He turned and looked at me properly. He looked confused.
"Hey, are you the same person that was here when I left?" He asked me.
"Yes, I am." I confirmed.
"What? I never really thought you would turn out like this after a good bath." He said.
"Thanks." I said.
"I don't need your thanks. You use my shower and now you eat my food." He added and walked out of the dinning where I was.
"Don't mind him. He is almost always like that with people." The woman said.
"I know this isn't my business but, why did you get married to him if this is the way his life is?" I asked.
"Okay. Um... The truth of the matter is that he wasn't always like this. He used to be very happy and full of energy.
"That's why you married him?" I asked.
"No. Not that. I married him because I fell in love with him." She said.
"What did you fall in love with? I mean, what is it about him that you loved so blindly?" I asked.
"I was young back then. I guess I just had a thing for bad boys. Now look what it landed me in. "It was after he got his new job as an accountant that he started behaving like this." The woman said.
"What's wrong with being an accountant?" I asked.
"He keeps saying it's stressful and he just can't handle it. Anyways, eat your soup, it might get old." The woman said.
She turns around and she leaves.
