Chapter 20
There were two ways they could head into. One headed towards a dead zone that Caleb had indormed all the runners about.
The other way leads straight towards the safe zone, its obvious which way they headed into.
"This way!" Jonah instructed, taking a left. He was hoping the guards stationed at the entrance would help clear them out.
One of the member had concocted a molotov as they were running. Once ot was all set, they turned around and launched it right at the horde.
"Eat that you scums!" He cheered when he saw them burn and fall to the ground.
Jonah briefly turned around as he saw the raging flames. He felt so proud of his team and cheered while he ran.
Despite the huge efforts, there were still remainings of the horde and having less of the undead chasing after them gave them a chance to survive for much longer.
"Come on, were almost the-" Jonah ran into a huge rubble causing him to come to a halt
"What the- What in the world?!" He questioned, clearly frustrated by what he's seeing.
The rest of the group saw the huge pile of rubble blocking their path back.
Echoes of arguing can be heard. The path to safety had been cut off and there wasnt really any way around it.
"......back" Jonah muttered
The group were confused and awaiting for Jonah's next orders.
"FALL BACK!" He screamed, not wanting the undead to catch up with them before they hit the corners.
"Are you crazy?! Jonah even a dead man knows better than to dive into a swarm of those bastards!" A group member interject
The arguing did not simmer down and the group were getting more anxious. Jonah tried defusing the situation but it only gotten worse.
Until, they heard shrieking from around the corner. The moment they heard it, they all went dead silent
Hannah looked over her shoulders and saw the undead turning the corner.
"Climb!!" She shouted and started grabbing onto the side of the building, climbing and making her way up higher.
The others soon followed and began climbing the building.
As they climbed upwards, using the rusty pipes and the holes in the building.
"HELP!!" The group looked downwards towards the source of the voice and saw their one of their squad member's falling onto the horde below
Jonah screamed in agony watching another member die in the most gruesome way possible.
"Casper....." Jonah muttered, momentarily stopping his movements, hanging off of a rusted steel pipe
Judas grabbed his arm and nudged him, pushing him upwards to keep on going.
Hannah was the first to reach the top, lending a hand to the rest that were still climbing.
They all decided to take a moment to catch their breaths and some even laid flat on the ground, panting.
Some snifflings could be heard and no one said a thing. After everything that had happened in the span of a few hours, they were just too tired to say anything.
*BZZZZT*
"....Come in, .......5th group are you there?......Runner 5 come in" Jonah's walkie talkie buzzed, breaking the silence.
Jonah reached out for his walkie talkie and answered.
"...Yes this is Jonah, over" he said breathlessly.
"Your team has not returned in the time given. Where are you" Caleb spoke on the other end.
"...We were cornered by the undead...and now we're stuck on the roof of the building in front of the safe zone. Could you send over some help"
"....They'll be right there"Jonah dropped his walkie talkie and looked over to his group
One of them had blood on their sleeves and Jonah got worried.
"Hey, are you hurt" Jonah moved closer to him as the others focused their attention on the two.
The guy looked at Jonah and saw his sleeves. He never realized he was bleeding and folded his sleeve to see a bite mark near his wrist.
"..No....." Jonah was worried.
"He's bitten! He's gonna turn turn soon!" Another one of the group member said.
They were all arguing about what to do that scared the member who had gotten bit. He didn't want to die, not after coming this far.
And he did the only thing that seemed reasonable to hime at the time.
He cut his hand off almost cutting off his elbow.
When everyone heard his excruciating scream, they all looked at him. Some rushed over to stop the bleeding and a few stood back and watched, not wanting to be any close to him
"AGHHHHH!" He screamed, clenching whatever was left of his arm.
Hannah was one of the person who stood back watching. As much as she felt bad about him, she still wanted to keep her distance.
Judas helped wrapped his arm tight to prevent him from bleeding out more while Jonah held him down to stop him from squirming everywhere.
A few minutes later he was knocked out and laid on the floor when help arrived.
It was the 1st group of runners. They looked at our group and had a stoic expression.
The leader came forth and ridiculed Jonah, saying that he couldn't even protect his own group members.
And just as he said those words, a fight broke off. Jonah was going up against the leader.

"....Huh, was there a run in with the zombies?" Caleb questioned, seeing their slightly bloodstained clothes.
The two group leaders muttered a small yes.
"Jonah, where are the rest of your group? Why are there only 5 of you left? Im aware you had about eight"
"We.....we lost them. We lost them to the horde"
".....my condolenc-" Caleb was cut off by Jonah
"The path was blocked off. We werent aware of this." Jonah calmly stated, cutting Caleb off.
"Why was it blocked off." Jonah questioned, crossing his arms as he waited for either of them to speak.
"Blocked? Were you aware of this?" Caleb looked towards the leader of the 1st group
"N-no sir, we too were confused when we approached it-"
"There's no way you wouldn't know! Isn't the 1st group in charge with patroling that area?!" Jonah yelled
"S-surely there's been some sort of mistake" the group leader backed off after being cornered by the confrontation
"Mistake? Mistake?! It cost the lives of my runners!" Jonah argued, he was getting tired of putting up with his antiques.Download Novelah App
