I watched her without realizing it, watched until the sun was setting and the barrier surrounding Samael’s plan was thinner, until the rune fragment she sent me was strong enough to enter.
"Don’t be an idiot," I remembered as my wings throbbed, "there’s no room for kindness, not after all you’ve done, don’t be such a hypocrite".
I swallowed hard and a smile easily appeared on my lips when I crossed. It was like a fog touching my skin, a comfortable cold, a feeling I had missed even without realizing it.
What the hell was I thinking? What was going on with me?
I closed my eyes tightly, but my wings just beat, just took me there, to that breathless breath and that smile that could be felt in her voice when she called me.
"Azrael!" His arms wrapped around my neck and... had they always been so warm?
"I thought you couldn’t come..." whispered her face down to my neck, I could feel her lips arched into a smile "okay? Did you get hurt getting past the barrier?"
My hands slid down her back and my fingers touched her neck in a caress that had become common.
"I’m fine" I said as my eyes opened, as I stared at her, watched.
Pink lips, small mouth, purple eyes, a rounded face and delicate chin.
When I first saw her, I considered her a child. A child with average beauty and low intelligence than expected to work with Duchess Asra.
"Come on... it’s cold, it’s better that you come in," she said, her hands holding mine, a warm touch I should despise.
Was I really caring about that? It wasn’t my first time using someone on Miguel’s orders.
It wasn’t my first time blaming someone else for a heaven-ordered cleanup, but still, there I was.
A ridiculous, pathetic version of the idea of leaving loose ends in a job like that.
'Erase your memory' a voice screamed in my mind.
'Just blame her, so no one will believe her'
'Cast a spell and cast it away'
'Take it with you'
I stopped.
My wide eyes, my whole body frozen.
What?
What the fuck was I thinking?
To take... ? No.
I let go of Cali’s hand and forced a smile as we entered the mansion, a little door hidden in the back, behind a rose bush.
"What happened?" he asked me, the twinkle in his eyes made my body shudder.
A soft smile and a slender face came to mind, starry eyes, blond hair.
'Shit... shit... shit!'
"Nothing" I heard me say "I was just... thinking."
"Thinking?"
"Thinking about how she can become more beautiful every day" I purred, but the voice that came out of my mouth was no longer mine. It was that hoarse voice, full of lies.
Right.
It was as it should be.
That’s what I’d become.
The face of Cali blushed.
"I... got the day off" he said as he stared at the floor "so... if you want..."
Ha!
Right.
"I would love to" I lied, my fingers holding her chin up, rubbing against her cheek as she sealed her lips with mine.
That’s all I needed.
A saddle and her eyes would weigh, her body would become more sluggish. Her eyebrows joined, her eyes blurred as they searched for me.
"Az...?"
"What happened, dear?" I asked in a concise way "you can’t expect me to let you hold me back any longer."
"With a..."
The dull thud of her body on the floor made me sigh, my hand sliding across my face as I climbed through my hair and threw them back.
Work.
It was work.
I should kill her, get rid of anything that could incriminate me. A snap of fingers and the gifts, the jewels, the dresses, everything I gave her, was gone, shattered in front of my eyes.
I crouched, my hands around your delicate neck.
A sudden movement was enough to make it no longer a problem.
Yes.
Just a little movement.
"Az!" her voice hummed in my mind and I Titubeeei back.
No.
No.
I... I didn’t NEED to kill her. No... it wasn’t like they were really going to believe something a simple maid would say. My fists clenched as I stood up. Cali wasn’t really a problem, so... I could deal with it later.
Asra.
I was supposed to focus on Asra - that’s what I tried to focus on, one deep breath, eyes closed and in a few minutes I had already mapped that mansion.
Magic was so useful...
"Apparently the lady will spend another night with the priest" one of the maids spoke as she passed by the corridor, the other sighed.
"I hope at least this time she eats something. The priest is a complete maniac with his experiments, if not for the second wing, he would forget to eat for months!"
"Well, he’s a fallen angel after all, it’s not like he NEEDS to eat."
"Who cares? It also weakens him."
I slid my index finger in the air and drew an ancient rune, one that Lucifer taught me when we were still a child, the rune of invisibility she created to hide from Miguel and escape with Quinn to the mortal world.
Asra was always surrounded by people, always had thousands of maids by her side, but since the saint had appeared, she had changed and if the saint was not by her side, then... it was my lucky day.
Dark doors, closed curtains, walls covered by bookcases and more bookcases. The great duchess, the phoenix who swallowed the sun - was sitting, a huge book in her lap, a worried face.
I was so distracted, so sure that nothing and no one would enter that place... that he did not realize my presence; his body remained motionless even as I approached, his eyes still fixed on the fireplace, even when I held firmly on my dagger and she simply did not hear the sound of my footsteps as I approached from behind, not until my blade had been sunk into her chest and my claws ripped her throat.
The blood gushed and the beats were gone, my eyes fixed on me as if questioning about reality, about what was happening and for some reason, I could not move.
We were motionless, she and I, both facing each other in an endless immensity.
The great phoenix that had given her heart to my sister... was dead.
I closed my eyes as I felt the warmth of her blood on my hands. As Asra’s eyes lost their brightness and life.
It was time to return, because Asra was finally - dead. My work was over.
