Chapter 20 Thorben Tells His Family His Secret

Thorben's Mum was on the phone with Annegret. "Schurli and Marco told me they don't know where Thorben went to. Been tryna call him but he hasn't picked up once", his Mum tried holding back her tears.
"Lately Thorben doesn't hang out with us anymore. I feel there's something he's involved in that he wants to be kept a secret. He doesn't even go for archery practice anymore."
"I may be forced to get the police involved. Who knows what he's going through", she sobbed.
"I don't think he's in danger. We all know Thorben by now. He'll come around soon, and that's when we'll make him disclose the truth. Don't be worried, though I know how difficult it is not to be, but he'll pop up again before you know it."
"That's what I'm believing", she responded, "Have a nice day." She hung up and saw her daughter standing at a place staring at her.
"No updates on where big bro is?", she asked sadly. Mum only shook her head and walked away. Waltraut looked at her phone feeling gloomy - she had already dialed Thorben's line 18 times that day."

Dr Nicolaus and Stuart were on a simple experiment. Dr Nicolaus dipped an empty wine bottle into his bath of the indestructibility liquid. Only the tip of the bottle did not make contact with the bath because he held it at that point.
He took it out of the bath and closed the bath. In no time the liquid evaporated leaving the bottle dry again.
"You can lay it on the counter", Stuart gestured. He laid it on the counter and asked for a hammer. Thorben gave him one almost immediately.
Nicolaus struck hard on the bottle with the hammer but no damage was done - it was very much still intact. "Now let's soak it into your own bath of density-lowering liquid", he said to Stuart.
Stuart opened up his own bath and the bottle was gently dipped into the bath just as the first time. The bottle was taken off and the bath was closed. Just like the indestructibility liquid, the second one was also volatile. Dr Nicolaus left the bottle to drop to the floor. Only the part that did not make contact with neither of the baths got broken out of the bottle - the rest were intact. Dr Nicolaus, Stuart and Thorben got very disappointed while Karl was only amazed by what he saw as magic.
"So the density-lowering liquid can't nullify the effect of the indestructibility liquid", Stuart shook his head.
"That means I won't be able to make Superhuman prone to injuries and pain", said Thorben, "How am I meant to fight such a person?"
"We'll figure out the puzzle behind this", Nicolaus referred to the experimental setup.
"You guys need to find a solution quickly. We need to before Thorben faces Superhuman. If the density-lowering liquid can't nullify the indestructibility liquid's effect, saving Nicolaus' wife should be on hold", Karl advised.
"Let's start something right away Stuart", Dr Nicolaus hinted. They both were on their way to the inner room when Thorben spotted his phone just close to its entrance.
"Totally forgot I have a phone. Being a superhero ain't easy really", he sighed.
"Guess who didn't forget you have a phone?", Stuart picked it up to hand it over to him.
     "Who?", Thorben felt lost.
"I think you should tell them the truth", he advised and tapped Thorben on the shoulder. He and Dr Nicolaus both went inside. Thorben saw he had multiple calls from his loved ones; especially from his Mum. He felt bad for what happened.
"I think I should tell them the truth. I haven't been home for like...2 days now", he said to himself.
"So we're just gonna wait here for them to be done?", asked Karl.
"I think that's the best we can do right now", Thorben answered flatly.
"Oh", he reacted and continued gazing round the laboratory.
"Gotta go see my family. I'll be right back as quick as I can be", Thorben zoomed out of the lab.
"So it's me alone. I'll just be staring at these paranormal stuff", Karl leaned against the wall.

Thorben's Mum opened the door and her eyes fell on her son Thorben. Though she felt so much relief within her, she could not hide her annoyance for him. Thorben knew at once he had to start explaining immediately.
"There's something I have to show you guys Mum. It'll explain why no one could hear from me", he began. Mum only stared at him - she was obviously still upset.
"Thorben?", Waltraut called from inside. She was very surprised to see him, gaping at him.
"Hey Sis!", he forced a smile sheepishly, "Don't worry. I can explain."

They were all in the parlour including Dad. Thorben and his sister were the ones standing.
Thorben took a deep breath. "Here it goes", he tapped on the flat device and in a second, he was in the Antboy costume. Everyone gasped out of surprise, especially Waltraut.
"So wait - You're Antboy?", she asked rhetorically. Thorben nodded in response.
"The SHC chose you to be their Super Creature?", asked Dad. Thorben responded the same way. Mum was too dumbfounded to say a word at first.
"The policy at SHC is not to tell anyone immediately, then the Super Creator can let you tell the close people in your life", he explained.
"So why were you away for 2 days? Your Super Creator lives far away?", asked Mum.
"Super Creator is the one behind you being a Super Creature right?", Waltraut asked him to be sure.
"It's a simple thing to guess Waltraut", Mum replied instead. She gazed at Thorben, waiting for a response.
"He doesn't live far away. I've just been really busy with things a Super Creature should be doing", he replied.
"Whenever there's a new Super Creature, there's a new super villain. So what are we up against now?", Dad inquired of him.
"We haven't confirmed it yet but we suspect Superhuman."
"Superhuman?", Waltraut got startled, "Thought he's a superhero made by Dr Nicolaus?"
"Someone that will kill me if I get more praise than he does is a superhero?", he gazed at his sister.
"Oh", she reacted, "That makes more sense."
"He may just be a jealous superhero. Not like he's gonna kill you literally", Dad shrugged off his shoulders.
"What he said isn't what made us suspect him. There are other things we've observed", Thorben stressed out.
"I don't feel comfortable with you being exposed to dangers in the name of being a Super Creature", Mum complained.
"I'll be fine Mum. Trust the SHC", Thorben gave his word.
"What are those things you guys noticed?", asked Dad, who seemed more interested in what Thorben was saying. Mum looked at him in astonishment.
They suddenly heard the sound of one clearing one's throat from behind and turned to see who it was. It was Schurli. "Surprise surprise!", he waved at them, "The door was partly open - that's how I got in here", he pointed. "I heard everything Thorben. You can take off the costume.
Thorben did the drill and was back to normal. "How did you know I'm here?", he questioned.
"The moment you came back, Waltraut texted me - and probably the rest. I was already close by so I decided to stop by at your place - now I've got the shock of my life", he felt so excited. "How did this happen? How did they pick you?"
"We'll talk about that some other time", he said to Schurli, "For now let me tell you guys what's much more important." Everyone remained silent so he would begin talking.
