Chapter Twelve

Today is Lara’s first day with her foster parents. The organization’s agent was to come to check on her once a week to be sure her new parents treat her right.
“Lara darling, say goodbye to the nice officer, don't worry we will take care of her" Stella said.
The girl waved her hand. “Bye."
Once the officer left, Lara and her foster parents drove to their home. Once inside, Stella and Aaron were so happy that they are finally getting money. Lara went upstairs to her room. She has been in the agency for almost a week, so she wanted to know if someone touched her things. Lara checked everywhere, but she couldn’t find the book “El Diablo.” She needed that book. Without it, she couldn’t see or talk to him and need his help to execute her plan.
She turned the living room into a trash room, destroying everything in search of the book. Lara was about to move the chair when her stepmom came to the living room, stunned upon the destruction.
“Lara, what the hell is going on?” she shouted. However, Lara continued her search, not caring for Stella’s presence. “Lara, I’m warning you. Stop it, why are you messing up everywhere? Lara.” The girl didn’t listen and kept searching. Without warning, Stella approached her and slapped her across the cheek. Lara fell to the floor and glanced at her stepmom. “I told you to stop it. Are you crazy? Go to your room and don't come out until I tell you so”
Lara remained on the floor, stunned, as she placed her hand on her sore cheek. No one has ever raised a voice at her, let alone laying a hand on her.

“What are you looking at?, You want to say something you brat, Now go!” Stella shouted.
Lara didn’t move. Stella grabbed Lara’s hand, dragged her upstairs, threw her into the room, and locked the door. Aaron witnessed everything, but he didn’t say a word.
In her room.
Lara sat on her bed, nostrils flaring and grinding her teeth. She wanted to do something to her, she wanted to hurt her, she wanted to make her regret what she did?How dare she raise a hand at her? How dare she shout, but finding the book was more important to Lara. Once she finds the book, she’ll give her foster parents the punishment they deserve.
“Aaron, dinner is served!” Stella said. She had finished cooking dinner as she set the food and other fixtures on the table.
“Won’t we feed the girl?” Aaron asked.
Stella almost forgot about Lara. “Do we have to?” Aaron nodded. She went
upstairs to call Lara for dinner but received no response. She unlocked the door and peeked inside. Lara’s room was very dark. Stella tried to find the light, but she couldn’t.
“Lara, where are you? Why is your room dark? Lara are you here? Lara where are you? Dinner is served Lara, come out now okay” Stella stepped inside the room. It was so dark that it was hard to see anything. As she walked into the room, she stepped on something that made a loud noise, startling her until something tapped on her shoulder.
“Lara, is that you?” No answer. “Lara?” Still no answer. Stella’s heart raced inside her chest. The adrenaline rose slowly. “Lara, stop messing with me! I will deal with you if I find out you are messing with me. Lara!"
Everywhere was quiet when she started hearing a baby crying, becoming louder. She covered her ears with her hands to stop her from hearing it.
“Stella, what are you doing?” Aaron said as Stella returned to reality, and the lights went on.
"I...I don't know." Stella said.
She was about to hug Aaron when he raised his hand to stop her. At first, she couldn’t understand until she saw her skin glistening from sweat. Her makeup was ruined, and her clothes were soaked, her eyes were watered indicating she was crying.
“I think I heard something, maybe a baby crying, I don't know I heard something,” she said.
"I'm sure you were imagining it." Aaron said.
"No I wasn't, there was something I heard. A cry I don't know but I'm sure I heard some thing Aaron." Stella said.
“You must’ve been hallucinating. Lara and I have been waiting for you, and why are you sweating? The AC is on. Are you alright?.” Aaron asked.
“I don’t know. You go. Lemme freshen up and come. Don't start dinner without me” Stella said.
After a quick change in clothes, Stella arrived in the dining room, where Lara was. Stella was shocked to hear that Lara was downstairs. She remembered clearly she locked her in her room. Stella had no idea how Lara escaped, but let it slide for now. She served Aaron mashed potatoes and beef. Lara was about to help herself when Stella stopped her.
"What do you think you are doing." Stellas asked.
"She is serving herself." Aaron answered.
“That’s not her food. This is.” Stella brought another plate containing a raw onion and salt. “That is your dinner. Either you eat it or leave it. I don't care, do whatever you want.”
Lara glared at her. If only eyes could kill, Stella would’ve been dead by now. She excused herself from the kitchen and headed to her room. Lara wanted to harm them but decided to wait. Only then will she torture her foster parents to the point they would beg for death.
