Chapter 31 Weird and Good
“Shit,” I mumbled as I was trying to look for my phone with my eyes closed, it keeps ringing, when I found it, I checked the time it was freaking five o’clock, “Who the hell would call this—” It was Kei, I sighed and slide to answer it, “Hello,” I answered in a very disoriented voice.
“Eli, look at the news, like right now!” She exclaimed, “Come on, get you fucking as in your bed!”
I sighed, “Fine, fine, shut up,” I muttered, and just opened my socials to see the live news while the call is still on, “Don’t tell me, yiu tripping on me right now—”
“Shut up and just watch the news!”
I tried to open my eyes and volume up to hear the news properly.
“—We begin with a breaking story that has sent shock waves through the community. The prominent Santiago family is at the center of a major scandal involving corruption, embezzlement of funds, and serious allegations of sexual assault. The Santiago’s, known for their influence in both business and politics, are facing intense scrutiny following a comprehensive investigation by the Southern Division. According to the report, several family members, including children the former mayor, have been implicated in a series of illegal activities. First, let’s address the corruption charges. Authorities have uncovered a complex network of bribes and kickbacks involving the Santiago’s and several high-ranking officials,”
I was shocked when I saw the news, it is indeed a shock wave news, specially to me, these people are well known for charitable acts, what the heck is happening?
“These illicit dealings have reportedly facilitated lucrative contracts and favorable decisions for Santiago-owned enterprises. In addition, the family is accused of embezzling millions of dollars from public funds. This money, intended for community projects and public services, was allegedly diverted into private accounts, financing the family’s extravagant lifestyle.”
“Why do you even want me to watch—”
“Just listen, bitch!”
“The scale of the embezzlement is staggering. We’re talking about funds that could have significantly improved local infrastructure, education, and healthcare, all siphoned away for personal gain. Perhaps most troubling are the allegations of sexual assault. Multiple victims have come forward, accusing The Santiago’s youngest son of heinous acts. These allegations span several years, with victims describing a pattern of abuse and intimidation aimed at silencing them,”
I halted, a man’s familiar face popped up on my screen. My heart raced, it was like I’m losing the ability to breath.
“The Santiago family has denied all allegations, with their legal team claiming that the charges are baseless and politically motivated. They have vowed to fight the accusations in court. These allegations are entirely unfounded. The Santiago family is confident that the truth will prevail and that they will be exonerated.
“Did you see it?! I bet your husband has made all of these possible! I mean, this was the only first time this things actually happen!”
“As the investigation continues, Meanwhile, authorities are in the process of gathering further evidence to support the charges. Investigators are combing through financial records, communications, and other pertinent documents to build a solid case against the family.”
“As the investigation progresses, the community remains on edge, eager for justice and accountability. We will continue to follow this story closely and provide updates as more information becomes available. That’s all for now. Stay tuned for further developments on this and other stories tonight on TV Seis. Thank you for watching, and have a good morning.”
For some reason I am now in tears, I did not even remember when the call ended and the news. I was too engrossed that Grayson might probably did this.
I stood up and immediately fixed myself, I went home. I can see an open light inside, the door was slightly opened, Jane was in the kitchen, standing like a statue while looking at the news.
“Jane,” I muttered but enough for her to hear, she immediately took her gaze to me, she was already weeping, “Hush,”
“Eli, thank you so much,” she blurted out as she came for a tight hug, she was crying like a baby, my clothes got wet immediately, but I didn’t care, all I can feel is happiness, “I owe you and Grayson for this one—”
“No, you don’t owe me anything, I will do everything for you and Dan, but I owe Grayson for this,”
We ended up baking cookies, this is our all time favorite bonding since my mom died. I can see both relief and happiness to Jane’s eyes.
After we finish baking, we put it into ten big boxes, and went straightly to St. Agatha, it was the orphanage we owe big time. They gave us extra hands when we needed to, and we would be forever grateful for that.
“Thank you so much for these, Eli. This is so sudden, something good must have happen to you and your siblings,” Sister Esther said, with a radiant smile on her face.
“We just remember the kids, so we made some for them, I hope they will love it,”
“Of course, they will. I’ll let them know that you gave it to them,”
I nodded, we talked for a bit and bid our goodbyes, Jane has to prepare in going to school, she will be graduating next week, so she had to prepare some final requirements, luckily, she found a good company that will absorb her.
I dropped her off, I can see the hesitation on stepping in the school premises, but I gave her a knowing smile. I let a heavy sighed just to release all the negative feelings inside me.
I looked at my phone, I haven’t received any calls nor messages from Grayson. It’s not that I’m waiting for him to call me, it’s just, I’m unsure how to thank him, and I’m quote not sure if this is just a coincidence or this happen on purpose. Grayson never mentioned to me again after the night that I told him about Jane.
I went to the supermarket, I have to cook something, Grayson will be going home this evening, he had an out of town conference, and I want him to have at least a hot meal. I don’t know if he is used to having meal at home, but at least as his wife— what the fuck?
The hell is happening to me?
I didn’t know what to cook, so I end up buying some stocks and decided to cook Beef mushroom and some salad. I love rice instead of bread, I notice that Grayson usually eat rice at dinner and bread at morning.
I got around around four in the afternoon, so I immediately start to prepare my ingredients and starts to cook. It only lasted for forty-five minutes, and another fifteen minutes for the salad.
I already cleaned the house, so I don’t need to think about that, Grayson’s house doesn’t actually reflect him. His house is not like a mansion. It’s a two-storey-house, that stood gracefully midst a lush, well-maintained garden. Its exterior was a charming blend of modern and classic architecture, with white-painted walls and dark wooden trims that contrasted beautifully. The slate tile roof added a timeless touch, while large bay windows on both floors allowed natural light to flood the interior. A wrap-around porch invited relaxation and offered a delightful view of the vibrant garden beside the house.
The garden itself was a vibrant oasis, filled with blooming flowers, neatly trimmed hedges, and a variety of trees providing shade. A stone path meandered through the garden, leading to a cozy gazebo in one corner. Colorful flower beds lined the pathway, and a small pond with water lilies added a touch of tranquility.
Upon entering the house, a warm and cozy ambiance greeted visitors. The foyer opened into a spacious living room with hardwood floors and soft, plush rugs. The walls, painted a soft, creamy beige, enhanced the sense of warmth. Large, panoramic windows with wooden frames provided a stunning view of the garden and let in plenty of natural light, adorned with elegant, sheer curtains that added a touch of sophistication.
The living room was furnished with a comfortable sectional sofa, a couple of armchairs, and a rustic coffee table made from reclaimed wood. A fireplace with a stone mantel served as the focal point, perfect for cozying up on chilly evenings. Above the mantel, a large painting of a serene landscape added character to the room, while other walls featured framed abstract art and family portraits, creating a personal and artistic atmosphere.
Adjacent to the living room was the dining area, featuring a large wooden dining table with matching chairs. A beautiful chandelier hung above the table, casting a warm glow during meals. The windows here, slightly smaller but still charming, offered a view of the garden. A sideboard against one wall displayed an assortment of decorative items and family heirlooms.
The kitchen was a blend of modern and rustic styles, with white cabinetry, granite countertops, and stainless steel appliances. A large window above the sink allowed a view of the garden while cooking. Open shelves displayed neatly arranged dishes and glassware, adding to the cozy, lived-in feel.
Upstairs, the bedrooms were designed for comfort and relaxation. The master bedroom featured a large, comfy bed with a quilted headboard, flanked by matching nightstands with lamps. Heavier drapes dressed the windows for privacy and warmth, and a couple of armchairs by the window created a perfect reading nook. The walls were adorned with tasteful artwork and family photos.
The second bedroom, designed as a guest room, offered a cozy double bed, a dresser, and a small desk by the window. The decor was simple yet inviting, with soft colors and minimalistic furnishings.
For some reason, it feels home. I cam back from reverie when I heard faint sound of clicking as the key slid upward, I turned off the stove and starts to put utensils in the table.
I heard Grayson’s approaching the dinning area. He shrugged off his coat, revealing a crisp white shirt slightly wrinkled from the day’s work. His tie was loosened, and he carried a briefcase in one hand. Entering the dining room, I heard him exhaling a sigh of relief, He placed his briefcase gently by the chair, his tired eyes softening as he took in the cozy, familiar surroundings.
“Hey, this smells good,” his voice sounded tired.
“I hope you didn’t mind me going through your kitchen,” I said as I sat down.
“No, you have the access to do everything here, Eli. It’s totally fine,” he said, I was about to give him some rice, but he stood up first and starts to serve some rice on my plate, “I know you had a long day,” he said while serving me some dish that I cooked. After mine, he starts to serve himself, then sat on his stool, “So, how’s your day? We haven’t seen each other for a couple of days,”
I can’t talk, my tears starts to build, “I, uh,”
“Are you crying?” He stood up and went beside me, “What the hell happen? Something happen while I’m not around? Tell me,”
I can’t talk. I’m okay earlier, but when I can finally saw him, emotions starts to build up in my chest. The relief, the confusion, the happiness I am feeling since this morning.
I met with his gaze, his eyes is full of concern, as he was trying to wipe my tears, his eyes softened.
“What happen, can you please tell me?” His voice sounded like he was talking to a five-year-old girl.
“I-uh, Thank you,” I muttered but I know he heard it, “I don’t know if that was coincidence, but—”
“I did that,” I blinked twice, he gave me a soft smile, “I told you, right? I have the keys,”
I nodded, my hands might possibly move on their own, I just found myself hugging Grayson. I felt him stiffened, but afterwards, I felt his hands encircled on my waist.
For some reason, it’s like I have someone I can lean on. Somehow—It felt so weird yet good.Download Novelah App
