SAGE From the corner of my eye, I noticed Wade leaning closer to my side, and my own thoughts wondered what had prompted Kathryn to come up with this plan. I'm not saying I don't want them to come here; I really do want. It would make living in this hell-like place with this devil-like husband of mine much more tolerable. "Why? Did something happen at home? Or did his father do something?" I asked softly, not before glancing at Wade again to now see him frowning at something on his phone. Is he flash or something? How the heck is this guy so fast? "Oh no, nothing happened. Ryan's father has also gone to Italy for some mafia stuff, so Ryan has been coming over a lot because he wants to meet Alisia. Today, they randomly started talking about you both and were whining about how much they miss you. So now they are asking if they can live with you both for a while?" she rambled, and I can feel her moving her hands around a lot, expressing her words like she always does. "Of course, they can come, it will be fun. But what about the lockdown thing?" I questioned, not understanding how this will work out. "Love, you keep forgetting that you are in the mafia. We will just sneak them into your house tonight." She gave out a small chuckle. "And about them coming here, are you sure you don't need to ask Wade?" she inquired, a slight doubt in her tone. "He doesn't give two fudges, he will be okay with it." I quickly changed my words because, god, I wasn't in the mood for another lecture on how I shouldn't curse. She lightly chuckles, replying, "Well, is he there with you right now?" "Uh, yes, Wade is here with me," I reply, a little loudly to catch his attention. He looked up from his phone and mouthed a "what" to me, with a confusing look on his face. I shrugged and stood up, walking closer to him and sitting adjacent to him on the couch, our knees almost touching. When he realized what I was doing, his eyes grew wide, and he started moving his hand around, telling me not to give him the call, his face completely filled with panic. I shook my head and put the phone on speaker after seeing his panicked expression. He was about to get up, but I grabbed his knee and made him sit down again, glaring at him as he was about to stand up. No one gets to disrespect my mother like that. If she tells you to sit and talk with her, you do exactly that. His eyes twitched weirdly, and he sat down, his adam's apple gulping in a slow manner, and his eyes roaming around my face. Suddenly, I looked down and felt his hand on top of mine, which was on his knee. His eyes were still fixated on my face while mine were fixed on his green eyes. "Sage?" Kathryn shouted from the call, and I jumped away from Wade, keeping a hand on my heart. "Y-yes?" I cursed myself for stuttering like an idiot. What the heck is happening to me? "Is Wade there with you?" she questioned, obviously confused by the sudden change in my voice. "Uh yeah, hello Auntie," Wade muttered, bringing his face closer to the phone, which was kept near me on the side table. "No need to be so formal, you can call me Mom now, Wade. After all, you are family now." Kathryn said with a cheerful voice. Family. Does he even know what family means? He isn't worth having a family. He doesn't deserve all the attention and love Kathryn is giving him. He deserves nothing but death. "No, it's okay, Kathryn. He will feel uncomfortable calling you that," I said, looking down, fidgeting with the end of my sleeves. This is so awkward. "Oh, come on, just because you don't call me Mom doesn't mean that he also wouldn't want that," she said, or I guess taunted. Ouch, it hasn't even been one day since our marriage, and she is already taking his side. "Sage is right, Auntie." My head shot up to his face, hearing his sentence. "I think I would prefer calling you Kathryn for now," he said, a confident facade enlightened on his face. "And I know you didn't mean any harm, but please don't talk to my wife in that tone ever again. Sorry if I come off as rude," he ordered. As he lifted his head from the phone, his eyes met mine, which were ruthlessly staring at him. "Uh, alright, I am sorry if you felt bad, Sage," Kathryn said, mumbling the last part. "No, no, it's okay. I didn't feel bad at all," I replied, feeling slightly guilty for not matching my words with my emotions. I did feel bad. It did hurt, more than it should. Maybe because it was Kathryn who said it, or maybe it was because she took his side. "Wade? Is it okay if Alisia and Ryan come live with you both for a while?" Kathryn finally asked what she called for. He looked up, once again from the phone, and met my eyes, asking for my permission, which I gave with a small nod. I think I saw the tip of his lips curve upwards, but it was gone before I could even see it. "Yeah, it's completely fine. Do you want me to come to pick them up tonight?" he questioned. So, he was indeed eavesdropping on our conversation. "No, it's okay. My driver will drop them by 9 PM today. Okay?" she questioned him, ignoring my existence. "Yep, it's cool," he said, reaching his hand to cut the call when Kathryn spoke again. "Anyways, it's good that Alisia and Ryan are coming to your place." "And why is that?" Wade questioned. "Well, you both should know how to take care of kids obviously. It will help you in the future when you both have kids," she spoke happily. Kids. When we have kids. Our kids. I looked up at Wade and found him already looking at me. He averted his gaze quickly, clearing his throat, bringing me out of the trance. "Kathryn, it's only been a day, what are you talking about?" I nervously chuckled. "A lot can happen in a day, darling, and I want to be a grandmoth-" I gasped and cut her call immediately, groaning. Right now, I couldn't even face Wade. I walked away from the couch and into our bedroom with my phone in my hand. I need to get some sleep right away; I won't be able to deal with all of these people if I don't get enough rest. It was 11:15 a.m., and if I sleep for about three hours, I should be able to wake up around 3 p.m., do my work, or read Novelah. While I was walking up to the bedroom, I felt steps following behind, of course, he has to follow me. "I am not following you. I need to get some sleep because someone screamed and woke me up at 6 in the morning," he grumbled, pushing past me and walking up to the room. Did I just say it out loud? Oh lord, this is so embarrassing. As I entered our bedroom, sunshine streamed in through the curtains, giving the space a pleasant artistic feel. I noticed him seated on our bed, trying to find something from his bag, resulting in all of his stuff scattered around on the bed, which included my side of the bed as well. All I want to do right now is be like those typical male leads in a Novelah forced marriage story and make him sleep on the floor, but alas, not everything in this world is possible. I walked up to where he is, crossing my arms and literally towering over his height since he is seated on the bed. As if sensing my presence, his eyes shot up, looking at mine confusedly. He tilted his head slightly and mumbled a small "yes?". And now I have an urge to smile at him. As if I am going to do that, though. "Wade?" I spoke, startling him out of his thoughts. "Oh yeah, uh, can you clean my side of the bed?" I spoke slowly, trying to form proper words, not looking into his eyes. I turned on my heels and rushed to the washroom, not bothering to hear his answer. Why am I even trying to be nice to him? I removed my lenses tiredly, rubbing my eyes. I quickly washed my face and applied some moisturizer on it, smiling to myself. I looked better. My acne was not as bad as before, and my hair was also quite healthy. The only thing I didn't like were my eyes. They were a light trenchant green color, making my skin look paler than it is. The contacts I have gotten are a little darker shade of green, so it looked okay, I guess. The eye bags on my face were very visible for some reason, giving me more reasons to go and sleep. I unlocked the door and headed straight for the bed, definitely not noticing how close his body was to mine. I turned my head to his side, seeing him reading a book that looked way too familiar for some reason. "The Sweetest Oblivion" by Danielle Lori. Well, at least he has good taste.
