Chapter 70 Critical Condition

Youngsoo gulped when he saw Mee Yoon approaching with pale skin. Traces of tears dried on her cheeks, and her gaze felt lost. He blocked her way and held her shoulders to stop her from going farther. Mee Yoon didn't meet his worried eyes and shoved his hands.
"What are you doing here?" he asked.
"I want to see him."
"He is still being interrogated."
"Why didn't you tell me beforehand?"
"Why should I tell you he's the person of interest? So you can save his ass? I will never allow that."
"You are being too much."
"Too much?" Youngsoo snorted and placed his hands on his waist. "I was busy looking for evidence, Mee Yoon. Do you think I was convinced when Daewon told us that Dong-sun is the serial killer? No. We considered all the possible loopholes before coming to a conclusion. We have powerful evidence and I can justify it."
The other police officers who were working on the computers glanced at them.
"You don't know everything," Mee Yoon said.
"At least I know now that Park Jin Ae, Dong-sun, and the famous Yang Hajoon are all the same person. You've been making a fool out of everyone. Don't you feel ashamed? And the worst part is you deceived me to conceal his identity. You, of all people." Every word that came out of Youngsoo's mouth was firm.
"Who told you he's Jin Ae?"
"I already knew even before we investigated him. When he shook my hand as Yang Hajoon, I felt it. The smoothness of his hand and the similar intensity they gave me, his scent that reminds me of a garden filled with tulips, and his gaze—he looked at me the way Jin Ae did."
"But I told you they're identical twins."
"Mee Yoon, the heart knows what it wants."
An officer came with two cups of coffee in his hands. He was about to give it to Youngsoo when another cop stopped him and shook his head. He looked at the two siblings arguing and sat there, waiting while biting some chips.
"Tell me, why did you let him pretend to be a woman and stay in the same house? Did he threaten you?" Youngsoo asked.
"No. He got fired from his job because of me and he had nowhere else to go, so I hired him as my bodyguard since my bashers were attacking me. I knew you would not allow him to live with me, so I suggested turning him into a woman."
"That's ridiculous! You took his bait. He planned everything. He manipulated you, acting innocent so no one would suspect him. What a great pretender."
"No. He is a good person."
Youngsoo let out a sarcastic laugh. "You're not being rational right now because you are in love. When people love, they believe the lies when the truth is in front of them. They choose to be blind to justify their feelings because they think it's true. That's exactly what is happening to you right now, Mee Yoon. It is part of his plan."
"You don't know what you are talking about. You don't understand. You got it all wrong." Mee Yoon's voice trembled. She wanted to say that Dong-sun was a Webtoon character, but she couldn't. Everyone would think she's crazy and it would make her claims invalid.
"However, there is one thing that we both know, sis. Serial killers are either insane or evil geniuses. I hope that answers your confusion." Youngsoo walked past her when she spoke, "If you convict him, I will disown you." Youngsoo paused. "So you are choosing him over me?"
There was a long silence before he continued, "Do as you pleased."
Mee Yoon went to the comfort room. There, she burst into tears. It was their first huge fight, and she didn't intend to go against her brother. She was out of herself and didn't know what to do.
Youngsoo proceed to the parking lot and kicked his car in full force. Veins marked on his hands as he gripped the steering wheel. He removed his blazer and necktie and threw it off as he banged his head on the horn. After a few minutes of emotional breakdown, Youngsoo lifted his head. He saw Mee Yoon enter her car, parked near his. He immediately hid his head.
As he peeked through the window, he saw someone covering Mee Yoon's mouth with a handkerchief which brought her to sleep. The unknown person drove her car. Youngsoo panicked and followed them.
They traveled for two hours until they arrived at an enormous warehouse. The area was far from the surrounding village, isolated from the crowd. The man carried Mee Yoon inside, while Youngsoo pulled out his gun.
Mee Yoon woke up when she felt her wrists aching. She tried to move, but someone tied her hands and feet. Her body was also tied in a chair.
"How was your sleep?" the man asked. He was wearing a white cap, a white mask, and white leather gloves. He wore a plain white shirt, denim pants, and white shoes.
"Who are you?"
"Can't you first ask what I'm wearing?" Mee Yoon examined him from head to foot.
"You are beaming in white," she replied.
"That is right! I'm breaking the stereotype that killers love the color black."
"Killer? Who are you?"
"You don't recognize me? That hurts my feelings."
"What the hell are you saying? Take off your mask so I can remember you!"
The man removed his mask and revealed his glowing skin. His thick brows, pointed jaws, flushed lips, and amber eyes weren't familiar to her.
"I don't know you. How can a handsome face become a killer?" she whispered.
"Handsome killers are more likely to get away with murder than the average type, because they can lure their victims without too much effort. So you have to watch out."
"Are you going to kill me?"
"Actually not. You are just a bait. My target is in sight in 3... 2... 1."
Youngsoo kicked the door open and pointed his gun at him.
"Mee Yoon," Youngsoo uttered.
The killer wrapped his arms around her neck and pointed the gun at her head.
"Hello there, Prosecutor. Drop your weapon or I'll shoot your beloved sister."
Youngsoo had heavy breathing, hands shaking while pointing the gun at the killer's head.
"Before that, let me ask you. Why are you doing this? Are you the mastermind of the faceless murderer's case?"
"No. You already caught the faceless murderer. I am his accomplice. After killing some women similar to Mee Yoon, the last shot must hit her," he said, and deepen the tip of the gun on her head. Mee Yoon gasped. "But he failed to finish the work for some weird reasons. So here I am, finishing the job. I guess you want to witness it."
Youngsoo put the gun down in slow motion. "Don't listen to him!" Mee Yoon shrieked.
Youngsoo directed the gun back. "Prosecutor, are we really going to make this tough? The cops won't be glad to see your bodies here, especially the prosecution."
"Too bad. A few hours ago, we broke our ties. She is no longer my sister. My priority is not her safety but your captivity."
Youngsoo pulled the trigger and shot his right arm. The killer dropped to the floor but managed to shoot Youngsoo on the upper right part of his chest.
"Oppa!" Mee Yoon pushed her body and fell to the floor. She moaned in pain as she crawled towards Youngsoo with the chair still intact on her body. Youngsoo gathered all his remaining strength and untied her as the killer ran away. He rested and closed his eyes as Mee Yoon covered the blood flowing from his wound using her hands. She urgently called the ambulance.
"Oppa, please stay strong. You can make it." Mee Yoon removed her knitted jacket and wrapped it around his injury.
"Mee Yoon. This is the fulfillment of my promise." Youngsoo touched her face. "Don't say that." Tears escaped from her eyes as she held his hand on her cheeks. Mee Yoon shook her head and hugged him. She was not ready to lose the only person who saved her life multiple times during her suicide attempts, the only person who protected her from every insect bite, harsh sunlight, heavy rain, and a broken heart—her original boyfriend.
Sun Hee was working in the Psychiatric hospital when she heard the news. They took the bullet out of his body, but Youngsoo was in a critical condition because he had lost too much blood. They were looking for blood donors. Sun Hee held his hand, hoping for him to wake up.
"You were right. I was asking for your sperm back then. All of my friends are married. I don't want to get a husband, but I want to have a baby. I like your genes that's why I asked you. But it humiliated me," Sun Hee said.
"You said you will marry me three years from now if we're still single. That was the most unromantic proposal I've ever heard of. How can I say yes when you're gone?" Sun Hee sobbed.
Mee Yoon rushed to the police station where Dong-sun was detained. The cops let her talk to him. Mee Yoon noticed his new haircut. She thought he was attractive, but she erased her fantasies and faced reality. They made eye contact for five seconds before Mee Yoon broke the silence.
"I never thought you could do this to me. The Dong-sun I created wasn't so bad," she said.
"What do you mean?"
"But I no longer have control over you. You said you have your own choices and you already have the freedom now that you are out of the comics. You hated me for making you suffer in the story. It makes sense why you wanted to kill me."
"What? You believe them?"
"Your accomplice abducted me earlier and my brother is dying in the hospital right now."
"Accomplice? I don't know—" Mee Yoon slapped him hard on the face.
"How could you lie to me at this moment? I chose you over my own family! I threw away my relationship with Youngsoo. For what? For a murderer?" Mee Yoon pressed her lips and looked away.
"For the last time, I killed no one," Dong-sun said.
"Sure. Prove that in court," she replied and gazed at him dead in the eyes.
