Chapter 68

“Why did you buy so much food?” Vivianne asked as she looked at the two bags of food Beckett was carrying. “Is the trip to Agrianthropos that far?”
“Yes, but that’s not the main reason why I bought those foods. You didn’t eat much on the plane earlier, so I know you must be hungry.”
Beckett placed one bag of food on Vivianne’s lap, while the other one remained below.
“I also bought sweets. I heard it helps someone to feel better. I don’t know if it’s effective with you, but…”
Beckett didn’t finish what he was saying and just adjusted himself. His ears turned red as he adjusted Vivianne’s seatbelt and his own. He wasn’t used to fussing over a woman.
Even though he said he was willing to do anything for her, it couldn’t escape him that this was his first time doing such things, and it somehow made him feel uncomfortable. He wasn’t sure if Vivianne would appreciate what he had done.
Turns out, she did.
“Thank you,” Vivianne whispered with a smile before she touched Beckett’s cheeks to make him face her. Then she kissed him on the lips, but it was quick.
Beckett was surprised by that, and Vivianne also stopped in her tracks. She quickly stepped back and looked out the window again. Her cheeks were heating up, and she knew she was as red as a tomato now.
“L-Let’s go,” Vivianne said, slightly stuttering.
Beckett snapped out of it when he heard Vivianne’s voice. His surprise from earlier turned into a smile. “Is that all I can get for what I did? Are you a teenager?”
“Well, are you complaining? My kisses are precious, you know!” Vivianne answered, sounding a bit stiff-necked because she wasn’t looking at him while talking.
“Then, what about all the things we did in Venice? Were those all free?” Beckett asked, making Vivianne even redder. Beckett noticed and chuckled. “Later, you can make it up to me.”
“M-Make it up?” Vivianne glanced at her husband before covering her chest with both hands. “You’re such a pervert!”
“A pervert?” Beckett grinned. “I’m just asking for a kiss, my dear wife. But your mind seems to want more than that.”
That's when Vivianne snapped out of it. She felt embarrassed to return her gaze to the window, and she felt like she just wanted to pinch herself.
Why does her mind wander everywhere, and why does she keep remembering what they did in Italy?
"Here," Beckett said, snapping her out of her thoughts again.
She looked at her husband and saw that he had an open ice cream sandwich in his hand. "Eat this. I’ll start to drive now."
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Vivianne took it. Beckett also began to drive. They were quiet during the trip, and soon enough, the sadness and embarrassment Vivianne felt earlier disappeared.
Now, her smile reached ear to ear because of the abundance of food and the beauty of the scenery. The window was open, so she could feel the fresh air. Sometimes, she would feed Beckett a sandwich, and he would take it.
Little did Vivianne know that her simple, unintentional gestures made Beckett happy. Despite everything that happened earlier, everything seemed to be okay as long as they were together.
After a while, Vivianne noticed they were at the pier. She thought Beckett would drive the car onto the ship, so she was surprised when he suddenly stopped the car at the side.
Two men in black opened the door for them.
Vivianne stepped out carrying a bag of food. It was surprising, but she managed to finish a bag of food during the trip.
Beckett was right. She was indeed hungry, but she hadn't realized it because of all the things on her mind.
"Give me that," Beckett ordered, pointing to the bag Vivianne was carrying, and she handed it to him.
Beckett gave the car key to one of the men in black. Vivianne saw the man enter the car, and soon after, the car started moving towards their destination.
"Why do you need to leave the car? Can't you just bring it onto the ship?" Vivianne asked curiously as she walked with Beckett towards the ship's interior. "And damn, this ship looks amazing for just a trip."
"Because one of the Foedus Corporation’s founders owns this place," Beckett replied before assisting Vivianne up using one hand. "This is the only way we could go to Agrianthropos. Nothing else."
Vivianne just nodded, but she was still amazed. They were wealthy too. In fact, she had seen many beautiful places because Alfred used to take her everywhere.
"But the members of Foedus... They're different. It's like they're hiding their true wealth from the masses..." Vivianne thought to herself.
Because of that, she had a thought. But she only asked when they were inside the midship cabin. Beckett chose it so if Vivianne wanted to sleep later, the ship wouldn't be too rocky.
"Are you wealthy too?" Vivianne asked Beckett as he arranged their belongings.
"What's with the sudden question?"
"Nothing. I just noticed that the members of your organization seem wealthy. So I couldn't help but wonder if... you're wealthy too?"
Beckett chuckled slightly. Of course, he was. He wouldn't have been able to join Foedus otherwise, and he wouldn't have tried to pursue Vivianne either if he wasn't financially stable enough to get her.
But he only responded with a smile to the girl, and even though he didn't speak, Vivianne knew what he meant. She was left gaping.
Due to exhaustion from the journey earlier, from the trip to the Allamino mansion to what happened at the police station, Vivianne didn't realize she had fallen asleep. She woke up feeling a gentle shake.
It was gentle but enough to wake her up. She opened her eyes and saw that it was Beckett who was waking her up.
“Why are you waking me up? Are we here already?” Vivianne asked as she sat up on the bed, still blinking her eyes.
“We’re almost there.” Beckett smiled before taking Vivianne’s hands in both of his and pulling her to stand up. “I want to show you something.”
He didn’t wait for Vivianne to respond. He pulled her out of the cabin and brought her to the deck. There, beautiful lights and buildings greeted them from an island not far from their ship.
“Is that… Agrianthropos City?”
“Yes.” Beckett nodded. “So pretty, isn’t it?”
“Hell yeah,” Vivianne replied, her lips slightly parted in awe.
The place looked golden and divine, especially at night when the city lights illuminated it. It seemed like a bustling place, yet the whole area also appeared peaceful.
She had mixed feelings, and she couldn’t even know what to feel.
“Wow. I didn’t know there was such a place in our country,” Vivianne said, still amazed. “If the place is this beautiful, shouldn’t it be in the news? It’s impossible for reporters not to cover this.”
“Only the founders, members and their spouses, and the residents there know about this place.”
Vivianne furrowed her brow. “Why only them?”
“Because this place is a safe haven for criminals and drug lords like me…” He turned to Vivianne and tucked a few strands of hair behind her ear. “And this is a place that can protect you, too.”
