Chapter 12 Broken Roots: Stronger Branches
The story of Boy's triumph over Tragedy (Continuation and Ending)
On that day, his venerable grandfather commemorated his natal day, yet he had inadvertently neglected to extend his felicitations in the morning. This caused him immense distress, but his anxiety was assuaged by the notion that his grandfather had departed early to tend to the agrarian estate. Nevertheless, he pledged to compensate for his transgression and make amends to his cherished grandfather later that day. In preparation for the occasion, he had procured an extraordinary cake made from the purple yam, which he had reserved at the nearby bakery. Throughout the course of his life, the unwavering presence of his grandfather had proven to be an unyielding pillar of support and stability. When his parents' relationship dissolved and left him adrift, his grandfather stepped in and provided him with a sense of belonging and guidance that he had never before experienced. Across the many trials and tribulations that he faced, his grandfather remained a steadfast ally, offering a shoulder to lean on and a listening ear to confide in. Their relationship blossomed into a deep and abiding friendship, and the grandfather became a true hero in Rio's eyes. As he ambled past the department stores, and Malls he observed that the scant number of laborers that he encountered had already vacated the premises. This prompted him to contemplate the idea of returning to his home, with the intention of retrieving the Ube cake he had reserved earlier that day. In his mind, he was unequivocally convinced that his younger sibling, Elmo, would be home now. However, if his assumption proved false, he mused about the possibility of fetching him from Aling Cecilia's residence, where he was wont to spend his leisure time frolicking with her progeny. Exerting a great deal of effort, he vigorously propelled the cart forward before coming to an abrupt halt. The tears that streamed down his face permeated his neck, prompting him to hastily wipe them away as he drew a deep breath and mustered a smile. With resolute strides, he made his way towards the pharmacy to purchase medicine for his ailing grandfather. The old man was in a precarious state, plagued by a persistent cough and a weakened physical constitution. Despite these struggles, his grandfather worked tirelessly on their farm to support Rio's education. Had it not been for his affliction, the old man would have likely joined his peers at the construction site, where he had previously labored to make ends meet. Regrettably, it was that same line of work that had befallen him with the grave malady that he was now struggling to overcome. The young man's face lit up with a smile as he returned to his cart, eagerly pushing it forward. The thought of seeing his grandfather's smile filled him with joy as it was one of the few things that brought him happiness in life, along with his little brother Elmo. Checking his pockets, he counted his pesos coins, nodding in satisfaction as he realized he had enough to buy his grandfather's favorite dish. However, before he could do that, he needed to return the cart to his friend, head to the local market to purchase the dish from the talipapa, and make sure everything was in order before getting the cake. "Joyous natal anniversary, dear Grandfather," he murmured to himself, envisioning himself clasping the package of confectionery in his grasp. He was overjoyed at the thought of his grandfather laying eyes on the cake's inscription. But enough of his reverie, he resumed pushing the cart forward. His progress was impeded when he noticed Elmo, who was sprinting towards him with a fatigued countenance and puffy eyes. It raised a sense of concern Rio's mind. The cause of Elmo's distress was unclear, and a multitude of conjectures raced through his mind. Perhaps Elmo had encountered some sort of trouble or was involved in a conflict with his friends. Rio couldn't shake off the feeling of anxiety that had settled in his chest, causing his heart to race and pound in his ears. Despite his apprehension, he hoped that whatever had caused Elmo's distress was not too severe or damaging. Rio breath was caught in his throat as he beheld his brother, Elmo, standing before him, breathless and trembling. Without a word, he embraced Elmo tightly, sensing that something was deeply amiss. The tears that streamed down his brother's face were a telltale sign that something catastrophic had occurred. With a calm and collected tone, the young man inquired about Elmo's well-being, hoping that his brooding fears were unfounded. Elmo shook his head in response, indicating that something was seriously wrong. "Let's go home," Rio suggested. "You can tell me what's been troubling you." Elmo's voice quivered as he spoke. "Brother...Grandpa...he's not there anymore. He was waiting for you earlier, but he's gone. Grandpa has left us." The tightening in his pharynx felt like a noose, choking him as he listened to Elmo's words. The news hit him like a sledgehammer to the chest. His grandfather, the one person who had always been there for them, was gone. The weight of grief settled heavily on his shoulders, threatening to crush him. He wished he could disappear, fade away into nothingness, and escape the pain. But the warmth of the sun on his skin reminded him that he was still alive, still breathing, and that the agony he felt was all too real. He turned to look at Elmo, his heart breaking at the thought of what the younger boy must be going through. Rio knew that he had to be strong now, for both himself and for Elmo, even though he felt like he was drowning in sorrow. Rio took a deep breath and tried to steady himself as he turned to Elmo. The younger boy was looking up at him with tear-filled eyes, his bottom lip trembling. Without a word, Rio enfolded Elmo in his arms, holding him tight. The two of them stood there, crying together, as the weight of their loss pressed down on them. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, Rio made his way to the local bakery to retrieve the cake he had reserved for his beloved grandfather. His heart was heavy with grief, for earlier that day, his grandfather had passed away. Rio's eyes were filled with tears as he stared at the cake, knowing that it would never be enjoyed by the one for whom it was intended. As he stood there in sorrow, lost in his thoughts, he was suddenly startled by the presence of the City Mayor. The Mayor approached him with an air of kindness and compassion, rustling Rio's hair in a gesture of warmth and comfort. The simple act of human touch was enough to momentarily ease Rio's pain, and he looked up at the Mayor with a glimmer of hope in his eyes. The Mayor, sensing Rio's sadness, offered him words of encouragement, reminding him that life is full of both joy and sorrow, and that it is up to us to hold on to hope and to keep moving forward. Rio listened intently, his heart slowly lifting as he absorbed the Mayor's wisdom. For a brief moment, the two stood there together, lost in thought, until the Mayor finally bid Rio farewell and went on his way. Rio watched him go, feeling a newfound sense of strength and resilience. Though his grief would not disappear overnight, he knew that he was not alone, and that there were people around him who cared. And with that thought, Rio turned and made his way back home, ready to face the challenges. As the sun dawned on a new day, he received a missive from the esteemed City Mayor. The letter bore the news that Rio, his cherished abode, had been bestowed with a full scholarship for him and his younger sibling. Despite the joyous tidings, his heart weighed heavy with melancholy. For the letter served as a painful reminder of the dearth of opportunities that had plagued his life till then, and the countless struggles that lay ahead. But in the midst of his sorrow, he realized that even amidst the gloom, a glimmer of hope shone through. For the scholarship was a beacon of light in the impenetrable darkness of his existence, a beacon that promised a future brimming with possibilities. And so, with tears in his eyes, he whispered to himself, "In the midst of all the sorrow, there's a sweet. A sweet that reminds me that hope springs eternal, and that the darkest of nights are always followed by the dawn of a new day."
