At Hayes' Apartment It had been two months since he met Johnny, and he admired him so much. Although he met Stanley through him, they have blended as if they had known each other for a long time. “Johnny will soon be a father through Lil Sister,” he mumbled. Little sister was the pet name that he gave to Ruby the day she graciously sat in the front seat of his car after the basketball game. Although he was an orphan and a self-made man, he took up the challenge of sponsoring his education by himself. Now, he had graduated and went into livestock farming with his little savings. At that moment, his new company was going through its teething troubles, but he was managing it very well. Likewise, he believed that in a while, he would scale through the hurdles. That evening, after the outing with Johnny, Stanley, and the others, he returned to his one-studio flat and meditated on his unsteady relationships. 'Why am I not favored in relationships? Do the girls I meet have anything in common with my parents, who abandoned me to my fate?' He mumbled. Those negative parts of him kept him thinking for a few minutes. Afterward, he pulled out his dress shoes and put them on a shoe tree at once. That was his way of keeping them away from any moisture and preventing odor. Meanwhile, he could not afford to replace them due to his meager income, so, he practiced those safety tips religiously because the shoe trees also keep the shoe in shape and help to dry out properly and fight off creases. “I'm happy for them. Who knows, if Adriana would have been pregnant for me by now, if she was not a thief,” he thought aloud. Howbeit, he had to eat. So, he fixed his food, ate, and afterward, went to sleep. The Next Day Although Johnny was troubled, he must comport himself and exhibit a positive spirit that would befit his present status. They prepared for lectures early enough, and he took Ruby to the Senior Staff Clinic as agreed with Dr. Harmon. To deceive the VC more, she wore the very clothes that she wore the previous day. “We are waiting for you, my Ruby,” Johnny stated after he opened the car for her, and she exited. “All right, dear,” She responded. She walked to the clinic and met Dr. Harmon waiting for her, and she greeted, “Good morning, Dr. Harmon.” “Good to see you. How do you feel today?” “I'm good. Thank you for your concern. And you?” “I'm fine. Thank you. Kindly take your seat,” Dr. Harmon offered and signaled her to a seat. Now, to avoid keeping Johnny waiting, and adding to his already stressed life, she put up a front, “Oh! Dr. Harmon. Thank you for your understanding. If I may ask, do I have to sit down? We should proceed to the Vice Chancellor's office.” “The Vice-Chancellor isn't in his seat yet. We have to wait for him to resume,” Dr. Harmon explained. Now, Ruby feigned disappointment. Then, she reluctantly sat down, and grumbled, “Does that mean that I would be late for lectures today? I missed lectures yesterday, and I would love to be early today to catch up with the time I lost yesterday.” Now, the doctor was touched, and she showed compassion. Then, she picked up her phone, and declared, “I agree with you, Ruby. I will inform him that you are set to leave for your lectures.” Instantly, a soft smile flickered across her face and she appreciated her, "That would be great, Dr. Harmon." Then, the doctor browsed the Vice Chancellor's number, and dialed it, while Ruby smirked at accomplishments and watched her. When the Vice Chancellor picked up his call, he greeted her, “Good morning, Dr. Harmon. How may I help you?” “Good morning, Prof. Farrell. I wish to remind you of Ruby. She is set to leave for lectures.” “Yes. I am aware. I will be with you shortly.” “It is all right.” “If only he would permit me to leave,” she thought and waited impatiently. Nevertheless, the Vice Chancellor arrived after a few minutes, and his driver parked his car beside the latest gold-colored car, which he was seeing for the first time on the campus. Without much thought to the car, he got out of his car and walked briskly to the clinic. “What is this man, up to?” Johnny asked. Then, Stanley, who was sitting in the back seat with Carmine, responded with a sad tone, “We will soon find out.” Now, to avoid more problems, Carmine volunteered, “I can meet her.” Now, the two headstrong boys felt that she may foil the VC's plans, and disapproved of her suggestion, “Don't bother yourself. Let him dig a pit for himself,” Stanley stated. “And I will gladly push him, and his entire family, into it,” Johnny declared with displeasure which was obvious in his voice. Meanwhile, Carmine wondered why they were angry with the Vice Chancellor. Nevertheless, the VC got into the clinic and walked straight to the doctor's office. “Good morning, Prof. Farrell,” Ruby stood up and greeted him bleakly, and the VC misunderstood it for weakness as a result of the pregnancy. Then, he responded sympathetically, “Good morning, my dear. How are you today?” “I'm fine, Prof.” Now, the Professor scanned her, and sympathized, “Do you think that you can make it to lectures today?” “Yes, Prof. Farrell. I'm not comfortable that I stayed away from classes yesterday.” “I can understand. Your parents have paid for accommodation for you on the estate. I would love to take you there now.” “Wow! That is good of them. Can I speak with them? I don't have their contact yet.” “You are right. It is rather too early to do that. They will speak with you later.” “I got it. Thank you, Prof.” “It is my pleasure,” he stated, and looked at the doctor, and inquired, “Is she discharged, or do you want her to return after lectures?” Dr. Harmon gave Ruby a searching look, and approved, “She is discharged. She can always contact me when there is any issue.” “Did you get what she said, Ruby?” The VC asked with concern. “Yes, I got her,” she responded with a doleful voice and took a step towards the door. The VC understood her haste and took a step too before he said, “It is all right, Dr. Harmon. See you later. I don't want her to be late for her lectures.” The doctor stood up and walked them to the door before she returned to her seat. Although Ruby understood how much love Johnny had for her, she could not guarantee his reactions when provoked. Joining Prof. Farrell in his car, and dismissing Johnny, may kindle a problem that she may not be able to handle. “Dr. Farrell, I will come behind you. My friends are waiting for me,” she declared when they got to the vestibule.
