151. Another Life 11

 At Nassau
After Marcel got Irene admitted to the company hospital, he was left with the task of checking on her. Meanwhile, she regained consciousness after a few days and was unfamiliar with her environment.
“Hello, Ma'am,” Dr. Charity Lawson, the medical director, greeted her with a warm smile.
She was shocked to see such an unfamiliar face. She squinted her eyes and beheld the doctor's beautiful set of teeth. Instead of answering, she smiled softly. Due to the pain from the suture, Dr. Lawson let her be.
“Don't bother, dear. You can sleep if you wish to," she advised her.
Irene nodded and relaxed. Likewise, the doctor left for her office and sent for Marcel, and he arrived after twenty minutes.
“Hello, Dr. Lawson. You sent for me,” Marcel informed her.
“Yes. Your patient is up. You may wish to see her.”
“That is good,” he admitted and walked to her ward. He gave her a warm smile, and inquired, “How are you, Madam?”
“I'm fine,” she responded with difficulty.
“It's good to see that you are up.”
She nodded with a dry smile. At that point, a caregiver arrived with a tray of light food and helped her to sit up. Subsequently, she presented the food to her.
“Thank you, for this,” she appreciated her before eating.
Truly, the patient was Marcel's. Sir Walter never bothered about her. That is, if he ever remembered that someone like her ever existed.
“I will leave you to have your food, Ma'am,” Marcel said.
Then, Irene, who was seeing him for the first time, looked up.
“Thank you for checking on me, Sir,” she appreciated as her lips slowly twisted into a rueful smile.
“You are welcome,” he said, and she continued with her meal.
After a while, the doctor left her and returned to her office.
Nevertheless, Irene was fit to be discharged but wished that she would remain in the hospital. Besides, she could not afford to settle the hospital bill. The doctor returned later when she was about to close for the day, and met her lying helplessly on the bed.
She gave her the usual warm smile, and announced, “You would be discharged tomorrow,” she informed her.
She closed her eyes tight and allowed her tears to flow freely.
Likewise, the doctor was disturbed, and she asked with concern, “What is the matter, Madam? I thought you would be happy to leave the hospital.”
“I wish I am,” she sobbed.
“Hold on,” the doctor advised and sent a message to Marcel.
At that point, he was with Sir Walter, who was preparing for another trip to Ridgewood for Carson's last event for the year and could not excuse himself.  However, he sent a message to the doctor and informed her of his plight.
Afterward, he took his boss to the airport and returned late.
He was very tired and exclaimed, “Oh! My God. Is it wrong to rescue someone?”
However, he got to the clinic, and met Irene, dressed in her old wears, and sitting in the waiting room.
Howbeit, he was disturbed, “What is the problem, Madam, and why are you here?” He asked in a rush.
“I have been discharged, Sir,” She responded coldly.
Although she was well, the trauma of the attack and the thought of her helplessness, still overwhelmed her. Besides, she would live with the embarrassing suture on her forehead for the rest of her life.
“That is good to hear,” Marcel said.
"You should be happy about that, and be on your way home,” he pointed out.
“I have not settled the hospital bill, Sir, and I don't have any money,” she honestly informed him.
“Yes. I remembered. Those hoodlums ran away with your bag.”
“You are right, Sir,” she remarked and fought back her tears.
Marcel noticed it, and expressed, “It is unfortunate that you have to go through this, Ma'am.”
“Thank you for your concern, Sir,” she appreciated him respectfully.
“As for the hospital bill, you are not obliged to pay, but …”
Irene's eyes shone with relief when she heard the gesture, and she interrupted him, “Oh! I am grateful for the gesture, Sir. You are a god sent.”
At this point, her tears flowed freely when she remembered her background. She recalled how Dr. Clinton, the Palace doctor, and his colleagues would go out of their way to impress her, and she would never show gratitude.
Nevertheless, other problems swallowed up the euphoria of the settled bill.
“You are welcome, but you can find your way with this cash,” he said and handed over some hard cash to her.
She collected it happily and appreciated too. Although she was not familiar with her environment, she got up to leave, and Marcel stopped her, “Wait for me. I will take you to the gate.”
“All right, Sir.”
Marcel walked to the doctor's office, and discussed briefly with her, “You sent for me, Dr. Lawson.”
“Yes, Marcel. I wish to inform you that I have discharged your patient, and she seemed reluctant to leave.”
“You are right. I have taken care of that. She will soon be on her way.”
“It is okay. I wish there would be a follow-up on her because she is traumatized. How much do you know about her?”
“I only know that she is a foreigner. I rescued her from danger when some hoodlums attacked her, and took her belongings away.”
“Oh! That is serious. I noticed that she didn't have any purse or papers with her.”
“You are right. They took everything.”
“In that case, you should send her back to her country. Otherwise, the authority would arrest her.”
Marcel was troubled, and he clarified it, “Getting her out of the country will cost me much because she had to process all her documents, beginning with her passport.”
“You are right, but the boss can help.”
“He would not. In fact, he thought she had left the hospital, and I didn't dare to bring up her matter before him.”
"That is serious."
"You are right."
“In that case, I suggest that you don't or else you would incur his wrath.”
“I'm glad that you are aware of that. So, what do you suggest?”
“I suggest that we get a menial job that would restrict her movements for her.”
“You are right, but it depends on what she can do?”
“Yes. Find out from her. You can talk to the managers of the Confectioneries Company or the Fragrance Company, they may be of help.”
“I don't think they can. The Young Master's absence affected the production. I will propose that we take her to the Stand Point Hotel.”
“That is another suitable option. At least, she would be accommodated in the boy's quarters.”
“You are right. I will call the manager, and ask Steve and Max to take her there right away.”
“It is okay. I wish you the best, and don't be caught,” Dr. Lawson teased.
They laughed softly and Marcel left. She discussed it with Irene, and she accepted his idea.
“I will be glad to do any job available, Sir.”
“It is all right. Come with me.”
He drove her to his security post and called on Alfred's PA and Security Officer.
“Max and Steve, you will take someone to the Stand Point Hotel.”
“We got it, Boss.”
“Good. I will speak with Mr. Donald before you get there.”
“Consider it done, Boss.”
