Chapter 28 Too late to say sorry

The officer who's laughing out earlier turns pale when he heard what the chief addressed her.
"But, sir, the investigation isn't done yet." The man tries to interrupt.
"I'm pretty sure this is just a misunderstanding with the complainants. Besides, we don't have any evidence that you make any crime using that identity. So I suggest that we must put this matter an end."
"You say so?" Siren raised her brow in disdain.
"Yeah. Besides, I don't want to be questioned by my superiors on why I let my men investigate such a shallow matter. I'm sure that Miss Mendez didn't do anything wrong after all."
Siren smirked. This man obviously making a way for her in favor.
"Okay." She got up. "By the way, I can see that your team is good. They do want to work efficiently. It's just how unlucky of them to have a head officer like you who is scared with names. That is the biggest problem that the system is facing." Then she walks out.
She saw the two women standing outside the door. But she just walked passed through them.
She didn't have the mood to be kind and courteous to any of them after dragging her and trying to humiliate her.
When they are already outside the station, she asked Harry to immediately bring the car.
When he's gone, she faced the man standing behind her.
It was the neighbor whom he met twice before. And just like the other times, she had a feeling that it's not just a mere coincidence why he's here today.
"I can answer your questions straight if you will ask first. Just don't glare at me like that." The man speaks without looking at her.
"How long have you been following me? Who sent you?"
"It's been months since I started following you around. The first day was when we first met at the Hotel back then."He shoved his hands on his pocket. " The First Madam asked me to do it. "
"Mama?" She furrowed her brows.
He nods his head as an answer.
Siren rolled her eyes but didn't dare to say anything. Time as Harry arrived.
He quickly got off and run around to open her door.
Before getting in, she leave a message to Jeff.
"Stop following me from now on. I'm not a kid for you to look after to."
She heard him grin but didn't say any word.
--------------
"Young lady? Do you want to eat breakfast first? I can take you to a good restaurant to have some breakfast first." Harry breaks the deafening silence as he drives.
"I'm not hungry." She closed her eyes and lean her head on the head rest.
She just don't feel of wanting to do anything right now. When she's looking everywhere, it's all black and white. She just wanted to close her eyes though she can only see darkness.
Harry didn't say anything and continue driving.
But minutes later, she heard an awful sound of a grumbling stomach. She opens her eyes and turn to Harry. He's biting his lips.
"That's really an awful sound." She smirked. "Get some food and silenced that stomach of yours." She closed her eyes again.
"I'm sorry, Miss Siren. It's just happen that you call me as soon as I woke up so I didn't have the time to eat breakfast."
"That's a lame excuse."
"Yeah I know. But I was really in hurry earlier that--"
"You should have told me you haven't eat anything yet. It's already ten o'clock now and you're telling me things like that?"
"I'm sorry." He softly said. His voice sounds like he's been defeated.
"Your sorry can't change anything. Why if you'll die now because of hunger? You're not the only one who will die because you're driving and I'm with you."
"I'm sorry."
She's growing impatient because of his tone. Is there any words he could aside from his irritating apologies?
"Get some food now. I don't want to be called evil because of your hunger."
Harry didn't say anything but soon after, she sense that the car speed turns slightly low. Then she heard a robotic voice greeting on the driver's side.
Seems like he turn to a drive thru when she hear him saying his order. But she didn't care and just keep her eyes closed.
--------------
No matter how he tried to focus on his work, Conrad couldn't keep himself from remembering Reena's face last night.
The moment she burst into tears was something that makes his chest tightened. Although he knew that he was the one who provoke her to cry, he keep on thinking that the woman deserves it.
She's a gold digger that being busted because of her doings but she still denies it like she didn't do anything wrong.
Conrad knows that it's not right to point his finger towards her but she had provoked him too. She talks ill to Meryll And his aunt and he must side them. Resulting for Reena to cry.
"What's with you? You're not seem to be focused today." James commented when he entered the his office. "You came so early but your not doing well. Are you sick?"
"No. My mind is being occupied." He leaned his back.
"Personal matter?"
"Sort of." He took his pen and tapped it slowly on the table.
"If you think I can help, you can tell me." He sat on the chair Infront of his desk.
Since James was his best friend ever since they were young, he confidently share what happened to him and Reena last night.
He looks so engrossed in listening but he suddenly stopped him from talking.
"You're so involved with this woman to even bothered with her business. Tell me honestly, are you into this woman?"
"No." He answered quickly. But James looked at him like he was extracting the truth in his answer. " Okay, okay.  Here's the thing. We used to be in an affair." Then he told him how they started everything.
James looked at him blankly and speechless when he finished telling him everything.
Conrad heaved a sigh.
"Honestly speaking, you are wrong in that part." James suddenly speak after thinking through things.
"What part?" He frowned.
"That you are calling her a gold digger. Bro, you have crossed the line on that part."
"Why? Am I wrong for telling her the truth?"
"What truth you are talking about?" James  looked at him like he had grown his second head before his eyes. " It's just what you think, but it doesn't mean that what you think is true."
He fell into silence. Come to think of it, there's a possibility tht James is right. He do made his own assumptions with her but it's only because he saw it clearly with his eyes.
He saw her with another guy two times.
"I guess you must apologize to her. Besides, it's not a good habit if you are jumping into conclusions just because of what you see. What if she's right? What if you misunderstood her? Do you even realize how you had hurt her emotionally with your words?"
Then again, Reena's face flashed in his mind. He didn't want to see her earlier because he's still angry with what she did. He even woke up so early just to avoid her. What if James is right? He my have hurt her feelings with his words. And she might be angry with him now.
But what should he do? Apologize and admit he's wrong? What about his pride? If he would apologize to her now, it will only mean that he's siding her and admitting that his aunt and his fiancee was also wrong. She had badmouthed them too late night. Shouldn't she need to apologize with them too?
Conrad looked at James face once again. But his mind was torn apart.
