“How is she, doc?”
“Your daughter is fine. Gladly, she was not hit hardly. She just woke up from her accident, so better don't let her experience this again. We don't know what might happen to her.”
“Thank you, doctor.”
“Hmm. Just call the nurses when you need them.”
What are they talking about? I slowly opened my eyes.
“Zainea?” It's dad.
“Argh. What happened?” He helped me to sit.
“Yesterday was supposed to be your wedding day, but you got hit.”
Yesterday? Wedding? What wedding? The last thing I remember was that accident.
“What... what... where… w-where is that person...? What happened to that person? I killed someone. No... No. I didn't mean it. I didn't mean it. Tell me that person is alive. Dad, please.” I cried when I remembered what happened that night. I was on my way to Zerro when I nearly bumped into someone's car. I tried to step on the brake, but it didn't work. The next thing I know, I hit a big rock while the other car fell off a cliff.
“Dad...” Guilt ate me up. I'm now calling him dad because of these mixed emotions I'm feeling right now.
“Hush. No, it's not your fault. It's been a month, why are you bringing that up? Stop crying, honey. Hush.” He hugged me and tapped my back.
“A month? Dad, I've been sleeping for a month?”
He looked at me with confused eyes.
“What's wrong with you, honey? Are you okay? You... you can't remember what you did after you woke up the other day?”
“I woke up the other day?” I tried to remember anything, but I can't.
“You even called me ‘dad’. That was the first time you called me that, honey. And yesterday, yesterday was your wedding, can't you remember? You even tried to escape.”
I can't find any of that in my memory. Why? Why can't I remember what I did? The last memory I have was the accident, nothing more. What is happening to me?
“Stay here. I will call a nurse. I'll be right back.” Father hurriedly went out.
Someone knocked on the door.
“Can I come in?” Megan, my best friend.
“Y-Yeah, sure.”
She put the apples on the table, then sat beside me.
I pulled her into a hug.
“I'm so sorry, Megs. I shouldn't have said those harsh words to you. Sorry. I shouldn't have judged you.”
She chuckled. “What's wrong with you? I should be the one saying sorry to you. I should not have slapped you. I know you've been shouldering many problems, but I didn't bother to help you. I'm sorry for ignoring you. I'm sorry for not helping you that night.”
“Megan... Don't say that. I already forgave you. It's not your fault, it's mine.”
“Alright, beautiful. Don't get too emotional. What important right now is that we are okay.”
I hugged her tightly.
“Did you miss me that much? We just saw each other yesterday.” She let go of the hug.
“We met yesterday?”
“Uh huh. What's this? Do you have an amnesia already?”
“I-I don't know. I just can't remember the things I did yesterday and the days before yesterday.”
“Ohh. Girl, you were also hit yesterday by some woman. What if that triggered your memory? That bitch, if only I was there, I could have slapped her 360 degrees.”
It could be. Maybe I'm just having a short-term memory loss.
“By the way, the woman was already in mental hospital. She's insane. She hit you because she knew that you'll marry the second son of the Constello family. She's possessively in love with that man, I guess.”
“Did you see Zerro?”
“Zainea, can you just move on? You're going to be married off to his brother. Zerro is no longer yours. Remember, he left you for his career.”
I smiled bitterly. What a fate. Of all people, why would grandfather arranged me with Zerro's brother? Why not him instead?
Father came along with a doctor. The doctor checked my condition.
“Miss Amadeo, can't you remember anything from these past days?”
I nodded.
“Maybe you lost your memory because of what happened to you. We will run a thorough examination on you later. Please, have a rest. Don't force yourself too much.”
I nodded as a response.
“I'll just settle the bill. Megan, can you stay here for a bit and watch over Zainea?”
“Sure, uncle.”
“Thank you.”
Megan and I were left inside. She took an apple and peel it.
“Megan.”
“Hmm?”
“Have you heard from dad about my accident that night?”
“Accident? Oh, that. Zai, don't blame yourself for that. We are doing a deep investigation, and we'll catch the real culprit behind that. As for now, the person who cut your brake was under investigation. And the woman...”
“What woman?”
“The person involved in that accident is a woman, Zainea. She's in critical condition.”
I gulped when I heard that. If only I did not act recklessly that night, I would not have caused that woman in such situation.
“W-Where is s-she? Who... who is she?”
“We can't confirm her identity yet. She has no ID or any credentials. The phone which is only the thing she has, was broken. We're just waiting for a report of missing person to confirm her identity. If she's a French citizen, it will be easy for us to find her family. But if not, Zainea, it'll be hard. We'll have to search the whole world.”
I feel so sorry for her. Maybe, if my car was just fine that night, she might not have to avoid me and move on the other lane.
“Where is she?”
She set aside what she's doing and looked at me.
“Your father brought her to your hospital. He doesn't want to spread the news that you were in a car accident, it might inflict a damage in your career, so he brought her to your hospital. She's in coma, but don't worry. She's been assisted by the best doctors there.”
“I-I want to see her. Please, Megs. Bring me to her.” I hold her hands and pleaded.
“But...”
“Please.”
“Tomorrow, Zainea. Tomorrow.”
A knock from the door interrupted our conversation. It's Zerro's brother, my soon-to-be husband, and his secretary.
“Pack her things,” he said to his secretary.
“What are you doing? Stop that!” Megan went to the secretary and stopped him from getting my bag.
“Dad wants to meet you. Now,” Zayden said.
“Hey, Mister Zayden Constello. Can't you see that she's injured because of that crazy bitch of yours? Let her rest, will you?” Megan pointed his finger on Zayden. Zayden ignored her. Instead, he came closer and carry me.
“What—? Bring me down, I can walk.” Seems like he didn't hear anything and just walked out.
“Zainea—!”
“Don't worry, Zainea's friend. President Constello won't harm her. Now, excuse us,” Zayden's secretary said to Megan, then followed us.
“It's okay, Megs.”
We arrived at their mansion, but here I am, still sitting inside the car. I'm nervous. I didn't get the chance to meet their father while I am dating Zerro, so I don't know if he knew that I am Zerro's ex-girlfriend.
Zayden knocked on the window.
“Do you want me to drag you out?” His attitude is way different from Zerro's.
“N-No...” I opened the door and went out. I'm still on my hospital clothes.
“You're so different from yesterday. You acted like you didn't know me, but now? Looks like you know that I am your ex's brother. A good actress, indeed.”
I remained silent.
I even met this man yesterday?
“Change your clothes before you meet him. Lead her to her room, and tell the maids to fix her.”
“Yes, boss. This way, Miss.” His secretary leads me inside.
Their house is bigger than ours. Of course, Constello is way richer than the Amadeo.
The secretary left me with the maids, and instructed them to take care of me. A maid gave me a maroon dress that is above the knee.
“I'll just clip my hair, no need to tie it. Thank you.”
“Oh. Then, I'll choose the best clip for you.” While she was searching inside the drawer, she accidentally touched something that caused her finger to bleed. Perhaps a scissor.
“How could you be so clumsy? Wipe that off.” The other maid gave her a handkerchief.
But before she wiped it, my eyes landed on her finger. Blood. The world seemed to be spinning, as I saw the blood. What is this? I don't have any problem seeing blood. Why am I feeling so nausea all of a sudden?
“Ma'am! Ma'am! Are you okay?!”
I blacked out the moment I feel the pain in my head.
