Chapter 20: Venture

[Samantha]
I apologized to the man. I apologized to Chase. I acknowledged that it was me who was also at fault because I didn't get to see him clearly. He was wearing a hat that covers half of his face. When he was running after Cassidy, my first thought that he's acting like a creep and probably scared her off.
Gregory on the other hand was hesitant to utter an apology. But he eventually gave in and said his apologies to Chase.
My friend Cassidy was still trying to mask her pretense in trying to act that she's asleep. But she clearly is not. I know her that much to have the opportunity to seize her act —when she's scheming a pretense in the way that it occurs in the slight movements of her body parts.
I saw her lids moved for a bit. I saw how her fingers moved too. She's been awake the entire time we apologize to Chase in the hospital room. We got out to gave them some privacy when the Doctor carried the result on his hands. Excusing ourselves and saying our goodbyes.
I'll talk to my friend when she's back in her sane self. When she's back in her hyperactive self with a state of a mind that's stable.
My disordered thinking went back when a hand softly grase all over my shoulder. I looked up and Gregory was staring down on me. With a concern on his look. I tried to show him that I'm good. I smiled a little.
He drew me close and I leaned towards him. My eyes went to the see the view through the window. The sun has not yet climbed higher. The heat that it will emit will probably be scalding hot.
“Sam.” A soft tugged from a soft voice made Samantha's eyes opened.
She was trying to stabilize her vision before she dared to look her way up to see Gregory's face.
“We're here. We need to get out now.” He said softly.
Samantha brought her head, lifting it a bit before she nodded at him.
Samantha was tired. She wanted to sleep. She was trying to compose herself in trying to walk properly when she suddenly stumbled upon her foot. Gregory was fast enough to caught her arm. He firmly strided his foot a bit closer before he suddenly picked Samantha and carried her in bridal style.
Samantha's eyes went big. Her exhaustion was suddenly replaced by an awakened heart who's been thumping with excitement. Almost as if the horses are galloping in a race. Her hands automatically went to wrapped around Gregory's neck. He was smiling down at her while Samantha rigidly went still like a rock. She was preventing herself to breathe.
Gregory rocked his heel a little, earning a squeal from Samantha. She moved closer to him, her head resting on the side of Gregory's neck.
“Sam.” Gregory croaked.
Samantha moved her head and stared at him. “Y-yes?” She wanted to give herself a slap when she heard her own voice stammering in her answer.
Gregory moved his head while Samantha abruptly moved her head away to give them some space. Gregory chuckled because of it. When suddenly he started grinning cheekily at her.
Samantha was confused to see him in such a goofy manner. He was smiling. Smiling with his bare teeth shown. She was taken aback when she saw his smile. He's way way more handsome when he has this expression.
Noticing how Samantha was not budging but was looking intently at him. Gregory moved the side of his lips. “Sam.” He uttered in a low voice.
“Huh?” Sam was a bit puzzled. An aftermath of admiring Gregory's smiling face. She slowly shook her head and blinked at him. She had a tight look in her gaze. “You've been calling my name for while. Can you tell me exactly what you wanted to say to me, Greg?”
The corners of Gregory's mouth moved. He couldn't stopped himself from smiling at her. “Do we still need to call the plumber or will you let me fix it? Huh, Sam?” Gregory asked before he showed her a boyish grin.
Samantha wrinkled her nose in return making Gregory gave out another chuckle because of it.
--
Samantha was sitting at her desk doing some thinking. She was delving deeper with the narrative. Pondering with the thought about Gregory's attitude.
“He's good having an inscrutable facade, but if something really is off...” She ticked. “If something literally went downhill, will he still be perfect when he's being thrown off?”
Samantha blinked twice and lifted her head a tad to the left. Her face focused on the the drawing hanging on her her bulletin board. It was an order from a woman named Laura.
She met the woman a month ago. Laura appeared in front of her flower cafe dressed in white. Her long wavy hair were on loose that it reached her waist. Her skin tone was fleshy white —it was white as a wool. The woman was pale but her lips were a bit red. Samantha compared it with the cherry wine she had during her parents wedding anniversary.
The wine her and Hailey fought over because her sister doesn't want to share. She was being stingy. She was glad she was able to remain calm after experiencing a chaotic mess not only from her sister Hailey but from her adopted parents as well.
The conversation she had with them months ago—they literally were judging her newly opened flower cafe at that time.
--
Samantha saw the judging gaze coming from her mother Nora. She tipped the glass and took a taste of the liquor.
“Are you sure you wanted to trade your corporate into something creative, Sam?” She asked her.
Samantha noticed the distaste from her tone when she uttered the word creative. She calmy stared at her mother and with an unwavering stare, she slowly nodded her head at her.
It's been a dream for her to own her own cafe with flowers inside its interior.
When Samantha was a girl, she always hoped she can open her own flower shop. Aside from dreaming of being an accountant and her love for counting pennies and bills when she was a kid. She always hoped that it will be a dream she can fulfill. And now Samantha is bringing her childhood dream into life—she can make her creative venture appear in her own reality.
"That is not something that is a success guarantee, Samantha.” William—her father interrupted.
Samantha bottled the raging irritating feeling she had for her family. It's been an ongoing topic lately over dinner. It's their wedding anniversary and her plan is still the the hot topic for the night.
She wouldn't want to create an argument. Not this time that they were having dinner. She saw Hailey's annoying smirk.
Samantha relaxed herself as she slowly sliced the beef, ignoring the scoff from Hailey on the opposite side of the table.
