Shonee’s POV “Eee!” Jordin wrapped me in a hug. “Oh, I’m so happy for you, Shon.” “Me too,” James added. “Although I’m still bummed that you aren’t going to be around anymore.” “Oh James,” I chimed. “I’ll still be coming around but not as a worker.” It was a little past seven and we were at the Double Tap, a bar I used to work in. Since I’d landed the nanny job I decided to hand in my resignation and treat my friends to a night of celebratory drinks. Per the night tradition of a club and bar, the venue buzzed with life, enveloped in the thumping bass of electronic dance music, animated chatter, and the cheerful clinks of glasses. The dance floor was at its maximum capacity with people dancing their troubles and worries away. Soft, amber-hued lighting from several wall sconces illuminated the space with a cosy radiance that blended tranquillity with vivacity. The ambience exuded a captivating allure, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the dynamic atmosphere, where every moment pulsated with an infectious energy that promised an unforgettable experience. Reflecting on my journey, it's hard to believe it's been six months since I first applied to work at The Double Tap. From the moment I set foot in this establishment, I was captivated by its charm and elegance. To me, this place was such a classy joint. As much as I enjoyed my time working here, it was definitely time to move on. “I propose a toast.” Jordin lifted her glass. “To Shonee, for brilliantly and skillfully landing this job. May this venture be the beginning of greater things to come.” “I’ll drink to that.” James also raised his glass, and I met his and Jordin’s halfway, clinking them together amidst laughs. We then downed our beers, enjoying the frothy beverage as it traveled down our throats. “Ah.” I set my glass down, a satisfied smile on my face. “So, Shonee.” Jordin turned to me. “What’s gonna happen to your place now that you’re moving in with a billionaire?” “That dump?” I snarked. “I’m leaving it in a heartbeat. Avril recommended that I take my time packing and move in on Saturday, but that’s not gonna happen. I plan to move in first thing tomorrow afternoon, right after I settle the two-month rent I owe Tiffany. I bet she already has plans to throw me out by the end of the week.” “Still can’t believe you will be living under the same roof with the hunk of hotness, Vincent Beckham,” James remarked. “I’ll do anything to be in your position right now.” He perked up. “Oh! Maybe we should switch jobs.” “Not in your gay life,” I laughed out loud. “There’s no way I’ll pass this job up so you can win a free ticket to drool over Vincent Beckham. I don’t even know why you like him so much; I mean he’s not that hot.” Both Jordin and James let out a dramatic gasp. “You take that back, Ms. Dating-life-is-a-bust!” James tossed a handful of peanut shells in my face. “Vincent Beckham is a hundred times hotter than that asshat fitness trainer you were crushing on. What was his name again, Dickson?” “Benson,” I interjected. “His name is Benson.” “As much as I’d like to stay out of this, I just have to agree with James on this one,” Jordin added. “Thank you!” James beamed. “In last month’s issue of Vogue Magazine, Vincent was voted most likely to win the hottest man of the year award, plus he was number one in GQ’s list of Influential CEOs under thirty. Compared to Vincent, Benson doesn’t stand a chance. How can you have the hots for someone like that?” “I don’t know,” I retorted, “Maybe it’s because we have different tastes in men. Usually, if I’m interested in a guy, it’s mostly because they have a heart of gold and a unique personality, not the wealth and power they exude.” Silence reigned at our table for a few minutes. “Wow, sometimes I forget how old-fashioned you are,” James mumbled before taking the final sip of his beer. I rolled my eyes and Jordin shook her head. “C’mon guys, it’s getting late. We should head out now.” Dropping a few dollar bills on the table, I quickly finished my drink, and we vacated the place.
