Chapter 71 Seventy
* God is enough. *
…
Evie's Pov.
After our conversation at the beach the other day, Evans and I hadn't spoken much.
Though, I missed him greatly. Why wouldn't I? It was something I couldn't avoid, since my love for him had grown deeper with each passing moment.
Sometimes I wonder if I'll be able to handle the emotions that come with him.
Several times, I'll hold my phone with the intention of calling him, but then I'll have a change of mind. “ He's probably busy. ” The excuse was the same every single time.
Though, it shouldn't be that far from the truth, cus if he wasn't busy. He would have called me, wouldn't he?
Days passed in the blink of an eye and just when, I'd begun to accept that… maybe, I shouldn't expect too much from him, as his love will never be enough anyways.
I received a call from Evans early in the morning. First he apologized for having not reached out to me all this while, giving the excuse of being busy. It wasn't so unexpected. What else could I expect from a busy bee? Or whatever it is he was.
I got ready, in spite of my doubts and just as he promised, he showed up at my doorstep in his bike and together, we rode to the location.
Initially, I had thought we were going to a fast food restaurant or something.
So imagine my shock when we arrived at one of the most expensive and reputable beach houses in the city.
Not only was it expensive, it was also very hard to get a pass.
Rumor has it that one has to book a few months beforehand.
So how then did Evans get a booking, I wondered?
If one thing, Evans didn't have so much connection in high places, or so I thought.
“ What are we doing here, Evans? ” I couldn't help voicing out my thoughts.
“ You'll see. ” He replied, turning off the ignition on his powerbike.
I got down with caution and he followed after.
He parked the bike in the secured packing space provided by the beach management.
We were given our pass into the beach after Evans presented his ticket.
We had just walked two minutes when Evans stopped all of a sudden. “ Wait here. I'll be back. ” Though confused, I nodded.
The sea wind blew, causing me to wrap my hands around myself to keep warm.
Minutes passed by with no sign of Evans, or even a soul and just when I started to panic.
The dark place became brightened up, I looked ahead and was stunned at what I saw.
What lay ahead, was a path with bouquet of flowers on every side.
Lighting went up on every side, suddenly, it felt like I was in paradise.
I didn't know how to react until music started playing in the background.
I recognized the lyrics of the song so well.
I've been looking for the one I've been searching for.
Since I met you girl, I have see proverbs 31.
The song was titled, “ The one ” by a Nigerian gospel singer, Festizie.
Though it was sung in broken English, it still felt very appetizing.
But why is it playing here? I wondered as the song continued to play.
Oh my baby, oh my darling. I go show you love.
Especially made for me, heaven ordained for this.
My thoughts were interrupted, when Evans appeared in a white suit.
He walked slowly towards me with a big smile on his face and just before I could react. He went on his knees right in front of me.
I watched him reach out to his suit pocket and fished out a box. He opened it and I was stunned to find a diamond ring in it.
He singled it out and held it out towards me with two of his fingers.
While the music continued playing.
Only you fine, only you set, you con know God. You dey speak in tongues.
Blow my mind, shey you get, all my love na for you my girl.
“ Evelyn. I know I haven't been the perfect boyfriend. ” His words came out with guilt.
“ I've put you through a lot, both mentally and emotionally. It's been hard, my love. ” The last word made Evie's eyes turn red.
He had always claimed he loved her, but had never for once called her, “ my love. ” it was just a simple endearment, yet more than enough to bring tears to her eyes.
He paused while the music continued playing.
I wan make you know sey I dey for you. You are my Daddy make I na me and you. From the depth of my heart, love dey flow, flow. It's flowing to you.
“ I'm really sorry, Evelyn. ” She subconsciously reached out to him and held his hands.
“ It's okay. I forgive you. ”
“ Thank you. ” He smiled.
Special lady, I promise to be by your side. On the daily we'll be living in a paradise, can't deny it I must tell you my girl, you are divine. Every night I'll be singing you lullaby.
“ I was lost, Evelyn. It wasn't easy being raised by a single parent. I have always hated my dad and never wanted to be like him. Who would have thought that I was slowly becoming like him? ” His words got Evie emotional. The pain in them was so evident, that she felt it too.
Why? Because she was raised by a single parent too. Though she never really felt the absence of a parent as her Dad made sure of that. She'll never cease being grateful for him.
“ I worked hard to avoid those thoughts. I was trying so hard so I can prove to my Dad that I wasn't like him. I desperately wanted him to regret leaving us. But I failed in doing that. Instead I became a shadow of myself. ” Evie was stunned to see tear drops fall down his eyes.
That proved that he was indeed in pain.
“ I didn't know where I was going until I met you, Evelyn. You were too good for me. I couldn't accept that. And when you told me you were in love with me? That was the worst day of my life. ” Evie found herself crying too, as the emotions became too intense to be kept in.
“ You showed me so much love that I found myself running away. You were too good for me. I tried avoiding you as much as I could, but failed. ”
“ Evelyn. I found God through you. And he saved me. ”
“ The truth is, I received my confirmation before you did. But I had a hard time believing it. I found it difficult to imagine that the Lord would entrust his most favored daughter to a broken man like me. What if I hurt her? ”
“ I feared hurting you and that's why I kept my distance, but I did hurt you in the end. Not once but over and over again. ” At this point. Evie fell on her knees and embraced him.
“ I love you, Evans. ” She cried on his shoulders. “ I love you more, dearest. Thanks for helping me find my creator. ”
“ You are welcome. ” she pulled away from his embrace.
After the crying scenario, Evans finally went to the main deal.
“ My love, will you give me the permission to grow in the Lord with you daily, till we both become like Christ? Will you permit me to hold your hand, to be your friend, lover, confidant, best friend, spouse, prayer partner, Bible study partner, Father of our kids, till death do us apart? ” Evie had never thought Evans could say so much until now.
She also never thought a proposal could be this emotional.
Having binge watched so many proposal videos on the net, she had always believed the emotions were fabricated until now.
She found herself being more emotional than the aspiring brides she had watched on the screen.
“ Will you marry me, Evelyn? ” seeing her none response, Evans asked again.
“ I will. ” She gave him her ring finger and allowed him to push the ring in.
It fitted perfectly, like it was made for her!
Or maybe it was, lols.
Evans stood up and pulled her into a very tight hug.
So far, that was the highest form of intimacy they've had in a while.
She loved how slow paced their relationship was.
Not because she loved things that are slow, but she believed in slow and steady winning the race.
“ I can't wait to start a journey of a lifetime with you, Evelyn. ” He whispered into her hair.
“ Me too. ” She smiled beautifully, showing off her new ring.
Indeed, God is good.
