A Hundred Eyes

Chapter 93
Dorin rushed towards Mordecai with a mad grin.
He has always loved fighting. It was the one thing he does where he can let everything lose. Especially when he’s fighting with strong opponents.
It was also the one thing that his Mother has always praised about him.
Not his lessons.
Not the spells he could easily understand and remember.
Not the crafts he tried gifting her with when he was still a child.
It was in fighting – and winning, that he caught his mother’s attention and favour.
That’s why in fighting, he loves to go all out.
‘Is that the best you can do?’ Mordecai taunted Dorin in his mind. ‘I’ve already seen all your attacks, may it be wind, water, fire, and earth. So what else can you do?’
“I haven’t shown you everything yet!” Dorin answered as he chased after the medic who kept running away from him.
He closed his fists, smashed them against the other, and called upon his lightning.
He felt high. So high without the seals and abasers disrupting his magic, that he simply did what he wanted without worrying about losing control.
His opponent was powerful, after all. He’s a mage from the capital, perhaps even a wizard, or maybe even a warlock? He didn’t need to worry about holding back or a possible overkill. He can just have some fun.
The sky overhead turned dark as gray clouds surrounded the area and sent pillars of lightning down towards the two mages. But Mordecai simply stepped aside to avoid the streams of lightning. He moved with such grace that it looked like he was merely playing with Dorin.
‘Still not good enough.’ Mordecai laughed inside Dorin’s mind.
“Just you wait!” Dorin’s grin wavered.
He called upon the strong winds and created a twister that made its way towards the medic, but still, Mordecai was able to get out of its path.
‘Useless. Should I proclaim myself as the winner now?’
Dorin’s eyes shone golden. He was no longer smiling.
“Not yet.”
He clapped his hand and drew an arcane symbol in thin air, mumbling words of power that etched itself in the air.
“I’m not...”
‘...done yet...’
He finished the sentence in Mordecai’s mind, surprising the medic as well as himself. He then stretched out both hands to his sides as a huge arcane symbol appeared from where the two fighting mages stood. It rose up into the air, as wide as a football field, as bright as daylight.
Mordecai stayed fixed at where he stood, watching the young mage wide-eyed.
‘Are you calling a cathastrophic spell?’ he shivered in anticipation. But Dorin was too busy with his incantation.
‘The opposite of life is death,’ he told Mordecai. ‘As light is to darkness... as order... is to chaos.”
‘Dorin, stop it!’ Mordecai called out, as Dorin reached out to open a rift in the heavens. He could see darkness from beyond. Until a hundred eyes opened to look down at him.
“How’s the fight going?” Johan asked Boulvar as they neared them.
“Y-you! Let go of the prince’s hand!” screeched Venet, pointing at the Johan’s grip on the older prince as he dragged Xander along.
“My liege, are you feeling okay after your duel?” Boulvar asked with worry evident in his voice.
“I am fine,” Xander answered him. “I told you, the air here is good for me!”
“So, who’s winning? Dorin or Mordecai?” Johan asked an onlooker as he went closer to the two mages.
“It is hard to tell,” Boulvar answered him. “Dorin has been throwing different attacks at Sir Mordecai, while the other is barely avoiding them.”
“So, no one is actually winning?” Johan asked.
“No. It is clear that Mordecai has already won,” said Boulvar.
“He has? But how?” Johan frowned at the big wind mage.
Before Boulvar could answer though, his attention was called by something white moving at the edge of his sight.
“Benette! Look out!”
Johan was just in time to raise a solid rock alcove to cover the medic from a piece of turf that flew from the fighting mages. Johan ran to his side and saw that Benette was too busy tending on an unconscious student to even notice the alcove he raised to save them both.
“Idiot! Are you trying to get yourself killed?!” he yelled at the pale medic who almost jumped as he touched him.
“T-this person needs medical attention!”
“And who would give you medical attention in case you hurt yourself? Stupid!”
Johan took the fallen student, placed him across his shoulder like a sack of potatoes, and grabbed Benette by the hand to get them as far from the two duelling mages as possible.
“Dorin! What the hell?! Keep your attacks down, you stupid idiot!” he yelled at their friend when he was in a safe area.
“I’m afraid he can’t hear you anymore,” Xander said beside him.
“Yeah, I guess with all this wind...”
“That’s not what I mean,” Xander interrupted him. “You see, Mordecai’s specialty is not just medical magic,” he explained. “His mind manipulation is admirable as well.”
Johan stared at the prince beside him.
“Mordecai, please take him farther, where he can’t hurt the rest of the class,” Prince Xander called out to the medic.
Johan raised an eyebrow as Mordecai began to lead Dorin away from them. He didn’t think he could hear Xander over all the din. They were still watching the fight when something weird happened.
“What the hell is happening?!” Johan gaped as blinding light surrounded Dorin and Mordecai. It raised up to the sky and left a darkness so intense, it looked like a chunk of the heavens disappeared.
“That... That’s a catastrophic spell!” Xander gasped.
“A what?” Johan looked at the mage beside him.
He saw fear in Xander’s eyes.
“A spell that big... how could a single under-aged mage manage to pull that off?”
“My Prince, We need to get away from here!” Boulvar was suddenly beside Xander. “A spell that big could swallow up the whole area!”
“But I want to see...”
Boulvar already had Xander in his arms before the prince could finish his sentence.
“Everyone vacate the area!” Venet screamed at the rest of the students who where still gawking at the scene.
“What is happening here?”
Johan turned around at the commanding voice. It was Dean Alcione with a couple of aids.
“Who is fighting in that field?!”
“Sir... It’s the medic Mordecai and – “
A shrill cry filled the air, sending a shiver down Johan’s spine. He can tell that the others felt the same as they stare past him. He turned back to look at the fighting scene and saw a crack above the absolute darkness. A hundred eyes were peering through form the in between.
“What the hell is Dorin doing...” he found himself asking.
