Chapter 3: The Breakup 2.

As we stood up from the bench, Sophia's eyes locked onto mine, a mixture of emotions swirling in their depths. I could see the guilt, the regret, and the hint of defiance all battling for dominance. Her gaze was like a magnet, drawing me in, making me feel like I was drowning in a sea of uncertainty. I, on the other hand, felt like I'd been punched in the gut, my emotions raw and exposed. The pain was palpable, like a physical blow that left me breathless.
"You don't have to feel so down, Robin," Sophia said, her voice soft and gentle, like she was trying to placate a wounded animal. Her words were like a balm, soothing my frazzled nerves, but I knew it was just a temporary reprieve. The wound was too deep, the hurt too real.
"We're still going to go to prom together, we're still going to be made the king and queen," she continued, her voice filled with a false sense of optimism. It was like she thought that by saying it out loud, she could make it true, make our relationship whole again.
I just stared at her, my eyes searching for answers, my mind reeling with questions. How could she do this to me? How could she throw away our relationship like it meant nothing? The memories we'd made, the laughter we'd shared, the tears we'd dried together - all of it seemed to mean nothing to her now.
"Don't tell me you thought we're always going to be together forever?" Sophia asked, a hint of amusement dancing in her eyes. Her voice was like a knife, cutting deep, making me feel like I was bleeding out.
I didn't reply, my voice caught in my throat. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Did she really think I was that naive? That I thought our relationship was invincible?
"No way, you really did!" Sophia exclaimed, her voice rising in excitement. "That's so sweet!"
But I wasn't having it. I wasn't going to let her trivialize our relationship like that. I turned away, my eyes scanning the courtyard, and that's when I realized that almost the entire school was staring our way. They were all watching us, their faces filled with curiosity and gossip.
As soon as our eyes met, they quickly looked away, pretending they hadn't been spying on our conversation. But I knew the truth. I knew they'd all been watching us, waiting for the drama to unfold. It was like we were characters in a soap opera, our lives playing out for the entertainment of others.
I felt a surge of anger and embarrassment, my face burning with shame. How could Sophia do this to me? How could she humiliate me like this in front of the whole school? I felt like I was naked, exposed, and vulnerable.
Sophia, oblivious to the scene she'd just caused, turned around and walked away, leaving me standing there, feeling like a shell of my former self. I watched her go, my eyes filled with tears, my heart heavy with sorrow. The pain was overwhelming, like a tidal wave crashing down on me.
As I stood there, trying to process what had just happened, I realized that our relationship was truly over. Sophia had made her choice, and it wasn't me. I was just a chapter in her life, a chapter she'd closed without even looking back.
As we walked out of the classroom, the sound of the school press speaker filled the hallway, echoing off the lockers and walls. Chris, Jordan, and I stopped in our tracks, our eyes fixed on the speaker as the voice boomed out, addressing the entire school.
"Attention students and faculty, we'd like to take a moment to offer our support to our school president, Robin, who's going through a tough time. Hang in there, Robin, we've got your back!"
My face burned with embarrassment as I realized I was the talk of the day. I covered my face with my palms, trying to hide from the scrutiny. Chris and Jordan burst out laughing, teasing me mercilessly.
"Haha, dude, you're famous!" Chris exclaimed, chuckling. "The whole school's talking about your breakup! You're like a celebrity now!"
Jordan joined in, his voice filled with amusement. "Yeah, and on the first day of school, too! That's gotta be a record! You're definitely going down in history as the guy who got dumped on the first day of school!"
I shook my head, trying to laugh it off, but it was hard to find the humor in the situation. "Shut up, guys. It's not funny. Can we just drop it?"
But they just kept going, making jokes and teasing me about my failed relationship. "Hey, Robin, what's the new tattoo on Sophia's back mean?" Chris asked, grinning mischievously. "Is it a symbol of her love for Tyler?"
Jordan chimed in, "Yeah, I heard it's got Tyler's name on it, right by her shoulder! That's some serious dedication right there!"
I rolled my eyes, trying to ignore them, but it was hard to shake off the feeling of embarrassment. "Guys, come on. Let's just drop it, okay? It's not like I'm proud of what happened."
But they just kept going, their jokes and teasing following us out of the school building and into the parking lot. We walked to our cars, the conversation continuing.
"I mean, seriously, Robin, what did you expect?" Chris asked, chuckling. "You knew Sophia was out of your league, she's just a player, and you my friend is a lover!"
Jordan nodded in agreement. "Yeah, dude, you're like a high school quarterback who got benched for the star player, but in reality, you're sure the star player, now we're wondering who got you benched!"
I sighed, trying to defend myself. "Hey, that's not fair. Sophia and I had something real, okay? It just didn't work out."
But they just kept teasing me, their jokes and laughter echoing through the parking lot. I couldn't help but wonder if this was what the rest of the year was going to be like – me, the laughing stock of the school, with everyone talking about my failed relationship.
