Chapter 3: Abandoned.

Emily's voice broke the silence, her words slicing through the air like a sharp blade, cutting deep into my soul. "I think it's best if I take Lily to my mom's house. We'll be staying there for a while."
My mind raced, confusion and disbelief etched on my face, as if I'd been punched in the gut. "What? Why? You're not serious, are you? This can't be happening."
Emily's expression remained resolute, her eyes unwavering, like a rock-solid fortress. "I've never been more serious, James. This isn't a joke or a threat. Lily and I need some time away from you. Your constant absence, your broken promises...it's taking a toll on us."
I felt like I was drowning in a sea of despair, unable to grasp the reality of the situation. "Away from me? What are you talking about? I'm your husband, Lily's father. We're a family."
Emily's voice cracked, but her determination remained firm, like a steel rod. "That's exactly why we need space. Your actions, or lack thereof, have consequences. I need time to think, to figure out what's best for Lily and me. We deserve better than a part-time father and husband."
The weight of her words crushed me, the truth stinging like a thousand bees. I scrambled to process her decision, my mind reeling like a tornado.
"But...but where will you go? How long will you be gone? What about our home, our life together?"
Emily's gaze never wavered, her eyes filled with a deep sadness. "We'll be staying at my mom's house. And as for how long...I don't know. Until I figure some things out. Until I can trust you again. Until you prove that you're committed to our family."
Trust. The word echoed in my mind, a harsh reminder of my failures, a constant ache in my heart.
"You can't just leave like this," I protested, desperation creeping into my voice, like a beggar pleading for scraps. "We need to talk, to work through this. We can't just give up."
Emily's expression softened slightly, but her resolve remained firm, like a mountain unshaken by earthquakes. "We've talked, James. We've talked until we're both exhausted. It's time for action, not words. And right now, the best action is for us to take a break from you."
A break from me. The words echoed in my mind, a stark reality check, a cold slap in the face.
"Please, Emily...don't do this," I begged, feeling the weight of my mistakes crushing me, like a boulder pinning me down. "I'll change, I promise. I'll do whatever it takes."
Emily's voice was gentle, but firm, like a mother comforting a child. "I'm not doing this to hurt you, James. I'm doing it to protect Lily and myself. We deserve better. And right now, that means being away from you."
The finality in her words hit me like a ton of bricks, a crushing blow that left me breathless.
"Okay," I whispered, defeated, like a soldier surrendering to the enemy. "I understand. But please...please don't shut me out completely. Let me know you're both okay."
Emily nodded, a small concession, a glimmer of hope in the darkness. "I'll keep you updated. But please, James...respect our boundaries. Don't show up at my mom's house. We need space."
As she gathered Lily's belongings, I felt like I was losing my grip on reality, like a shipwrecked sailor clinging to a piece of debris in a stormy sea.
As I slumped back onto the couch, defeated, Lily's small voice pierced the silence, like a dagger to my heart. "Mom said you're a bastard."
My eyes widened in shock, realizing she had overheard our conversation. I tried to downplay it, hoping to shield her from the harsh reality. "Oh, sweetie, Mom was just joking. She didn't mean it. Grown-ups sometimes say things they don't mean when they're upset."
Lily's eyes never left mine, her gaze piercing, as if searching for the truth. "No, she wasn't joking. She was crying. And she said you're never here for us."
My attempt at reassurance faltered, like a crumbling wall. I knew I had to confront the truth, no matter how painful.
"Lily, I'm so sorry. Mom and I had a disagreement, but it's not your fault. And I'm sorry I missed your birthday. I know how much it meant to you, and I feel terrible for not being here."
Lily's expression turned solemn, her voice laced with disappointment and hurt. "You missed my birthday. You promised you'd be here. You always promise, but you never keep your promises."
I felt a stinging sensation, knowing I'd let her down, like a repeated blow to my already battered soul. "I know, baby. I'm so sorry. I got stuck at work, and things got complicated. But that's no excuse. I should have been here for you."
Lily's voice interrupted me, her words a painful reminder of my failure. "You always get stuck at work. You always miss important things. Like my school play, and Mom's birthday. You're always busy, always gone."
I reached out, hoping to comfort her, but she pulled away, her eyes welling up with tears.
"I don't want to talk to you right now," she said, her voice trembling. "I'm going to go help Mom pack."
With that, she got up from the couch and walked into the room where Emily was packing their belongings. I watched, feeling helpless, like a spectator in a nightmare, as Lily disappeared from view.
Emily's voice drifted out of the room, gentle but firm. "Let's go, Lily. We need to get going. We'll talk about this later, okay?"
I remained seated, feeling the weight of my mistakes crushing me, like a mountain range collapsing on my shoulders. The sound of their departure was like a death knell, signaling the end of our life together, at least for now.
As the door closed behind them, I whispered, "I'm sorry, Lily. I'm so sorry." But my words were met with silence, a stark reminder of my failures as a husband and father. The emptiness of the room echoed with my regrets, a haunting reminder of what I had lost.
