I grabbed the towel from the hanger and came out of the shower. The bathroom is filled with the smell of my lavender body wash and the lavender air freshener, which soothes my mind. Inhaling the fragrance, I stop by the sink, and I look straight at the mirror.
"First day of new work; good luck, Anna," I smiled at my image.
I was somewhat lucky since the day I moved out from home, got a great job, and then now, I'm promoted to the headquarters to be an assistant for the CEO. I have no idea why I was chosen from all the candidates, the workers from the sub branches. Many were qualified than me, and they envied me for being chosen by the management itself. An assistant? I'm clueless about my role as all i did was to sit, answer calls, and write articles. Was the procedure even fair? I was pressured when I received the notice from my head in the team, but later, I found out that it was not only me, five people from every sub branches were chosen to attend the interview. But, I was still bothered as the other employees were just promoted, but I'm promoted to be the assistant of the CEO? Is that a promotion for me!
My boss, Mr.Andrews was the nicest person in the set of team leaders. He briefed me about the headquarters, and he never stopped praising me. He had supported me since the day I joined and was appreciated as a hardworking employee in every meeting. He is really a nice man, and parting away from them, him, and my other teammates with whom I've worked for more than three years was indeed difficult.
"Mr. Han." I utter his name as I walk out of the washroom.
What kind of a peeson will he be?
The dresses I ironed before going to freshen up were on the bed, and my head exploded with curiosity to know why would Mr. Han, list me to the recruitment list, I just feel like I don't deserve the promotion, but honestly speaking, maybe I do.
An assistant? Should I go around with him always? The role assistant, I've been removing the previous word to make myself feel less pressured and stresswd–a personal assistant! What if I get fired later? Should I find another job?
A loud sigh leaves my lips as I throw the numerous questions out of my head. Grabbing the dress, I began to put it in. A pair of grey sailer pants along with a white blouse tucked in and then a brown overcoat.
I tie my brunette strands up to a pony tail, and I avert my gaze to the mirror. The thin lips spread to a grin, noticing the time, I'm still early. With a little makeup, I'm completely done. I should reach there early as the first impression is the best impression. Putting on my spectacles, I take my bag, and I look at my reflection for one last time. Why on earth am I freaking nervous? I wasn't this nervous when I first applied for a job, but today, it's different. It's like I get this bad feeling where I have this illusion of today would not be my day.
Waiting for the elevator is something that makes me impatient. I'm living on the last floor of the apartment. Being on the tenth floor is something I like because the view from the balcony is breathtaking; it helps me release my stress, and that was not exactly why I chose to stay here. It was only because the rental was much cheaper than the other places and I found the house convenient. Every floor has three houses in each except the last one, it has two houses one is where I stay and the one opposite is on vacant. It's creepy sometimes as I'm alone, but it's definitely peaceful.
One of the best decisions I took in life was to move out from home, the home which is not a home for me. It didn't have the warmth, the love, and the care. Circumstances got out of hand, and my parents always fought. It was never-ending. Curse words were common at home, we didn't have the happy together meal as we did and eventually the house was like a funeral, neither of us uttered a word, when someone did it only ended up in a quarrel. Whenever my parents fought, I stayed out sitting on the staircase, staring at an empty space with welled up eyes, but my tears drained when my neighbour comforted me. He always tries his best to cheer me up, and I'malways gratefulfor him even though I don't know where he is now after ten years. My parents divorced when I was fourteen, and my dad decided to leave us, leaving mom and me, behind as he had gotten a mistress and yearned to start a new family. I moved to another city with mom, and later, she got married, too, a stepfather, step sister, and brother. Nothing made me comfortable there, so I decided to leave with my little savings. And here, I am managed to rent a place and live by myself.
Every passing second seems to be like an hour when I wait for the elevator. Taking my phone out, I plugged in my headphones, and a few minutes later, the doors finally parted.
Being late is not my kind of thing, and on the first day, definitely not. It's seven thirty, and I have an hour to be there. By the time I have tea in my usual spot and leave, I will be there for sure. Luckily, I got a taxi as soon as I walked to the road. Adjusting my glasses, I looked through the car window, and it was just another busy day.
The car comes to a halt by the enormous building. I felt calm after having my favourite milk tea, but now, standing in front of this large building brought nervousness back. I walk in, looking around in awe. This is literary beautiful. Just like those massive offices I see on tv, the interior is on ultra standard, and the fountain, a little away from the transculent door, is just awesome.
"Whoa," the word left my lips without my realisation. I couldn't stop gawking at the surroundings until my phone rang. My lips twitched on their own at the caller id, Dylan.
"How's everything going, baby?" He asks as soon as I pick the call.
"Just arrived and seems like—" I take a moment to stop myself from admiring the architecture handwork. "The working place is on high tech." I laugh hearing his chuckle from the other side. I was just behaving like a kid who visited the zoo for the first time.
"I'll be there to pick you up."
"Okay—" I finally walk ahead further. "I'll be waiting for you, and tonight is my treat." With that said, I hung up
There is nothing perfect in life than having an understanding friend. Dylan is one of them. We have always been together since the day we ran into each other, in college, and he was my senior. We were teamed up for a project, and he was a computer program student and I was a freshman in business. Later, he introduced his sister to me, and we three hung out often. Most of our colleagues misunderstood our relationship as a couple, but it was only pure friendship.
I stop by the registrar table, and the pretty girl on the opposite side passes me a pleasing smile. She was tall , and I had to look up a bit. It's a shame to tell, even though I've worn heels, why am I the short one.
"Your name?" She asks.
"Anna, Anna Kane." I reply. Mentioning my sir name is a word that doesn't easily slip down my tongue. Since the day he left after divorce, he had never taken an approach to see me or even talk to me. Wasn't I his daughter as well?
"The eighth floor."
I nod and make my way to the elevator. Nervousness eats me up waiting for the elevator, this always makes me impatient. I'm here, finally taking a step ahead from my job. I adjust my glasses as I notice all eyes on me. Their gaze was just adding more salt to my already nerve-wracking self.
Maybe something is wrong with my outfit, or is it that I'm not suited here? Am I the odd one here? Lists of statements are being scanned into my mind, and they paused when the elevator welcomed me.
From the ground, I shift my gaze to the elevator details screen, and there are only three floors left, and now I'm about to explode. What the hell am I supposed to do? My body sway slightly on its own as I nibble on my bottom lip. Now, I feel like I could have done at least a little research about the headquarters. I had this overconfidence in me like it would be the same working environment, but no, I'm going to meet the CEO, Mr. Han. The skyline builders lost many prjects in hand few years ago, although the brand experienced a decline a few years ago, it swiftly regained its prominence when Mr. Han entered the industry, propelling it to the top of the list.
Is it believable if I say that I have no idea about him or even how he looks. I've only heard about him in the gossip topics. They told me he was one of the youngest business to flip the company to the top in a short period of time. Indeed, he was successful. He is known for his unique strategies and, of course, for his appearance. On my last day of work, all the girls literally squealed when they told me about him, they said he is freaking handsome, but for his character, it was nothing but a frown on the perfect feature. Hot headed and cold-hearted are the two words that described him. However, Mr. Andrews commented with some positive compliments despite the appearance and kept on pushing me to accept the offer.
The ringing sound of the elevator brought me back to reality, I tucked the stray of strands behind my ears, and I stepped into the elevator. I inhale a deep breath in and blow it out.
"Be calm." I motivate myself.
"A newbie?" The unknown sexy voice takes my attention.
I turn to my right to see, a woman gazing at me from top to bottom. Wow, my inner voice awed. This woman next to me is definitely a goddes. She is so beautiful, if I'm a man in this elevator, alone with her, I would definitely approach her with plans.
"Which floor?" She asks, passing me a smile. The red plump lips twitched to a perfect charming grin.
"Eight." The answer comes in an instant.
"Eight?" She repeats with her finely trimmed brows raised.
I nod.
"Oh," she pushes her index finger on the number eight and shifts her gaze back to me. "For the assistant role, right?" She flicks her finger.
"Yes."
"Seems like he has got his eyes on someone."
"Huh?" The word leaves my lips in curiosity, and my head is already moved forward without my consciousness. I clear my throat, and I stand straight, I did hear her mutter under her breath.
She chuckles and shoves her hand in the air. "It's just that you know he had hired many assistants, and most of them were fired in two months."
I gulp at her statement. Two months? Is he that bad?
She clicks her tongue and thinks for a moment. "According to the count from what I know, I think you're the thirty first one."
"My—goodness—"
She chuckles and studies my astonished face. Is this day going to be like how I predicted? A bad day!
The door parts. "Oh, I gotta go. See yah, newbie." She waves and walks out.
My mind couldn't focus now, and every passing second, waiting till I reached the destination, became suffocating. My eyes close as the door opens, taking a deep breath in I walk ahead straight, according to how the girl at the registrar table guided.
My feet stop by the door. My hands had already begun to sweat, no matter how nervous I am. If he is a person who is hot head or cold-hearted, I would never cope up with him. Just stick my tongue out and leave. I laugh at my own thoughts, and I knock at the door
"May I come in?” I ask.
And there came the deep voice in reply, saying yes. The voice, which was kinda familiar. Download Novelah App
