Chapter 31 Taking Out The Lead

The ride to California wasn't so tedious, but the search for Jacques resident was wearisome. But they would soon creft to downtown Los Angeles but they were redirected to the outskirts.
"So much for a person like Jacques, don't you think?" Logan said to Camila standing beside his car. They were facing the street and Camila had stopped to get some things in a general merchandise store.
"It's Jacques, what did you think?" She said with a shrug.
"Is Jacques? Are you kidding me? You are the one that brought us out here."
Camila opened her car's door. "Don't worry. We are going to find him at …" and she lapped inside. Riding off with Logan closely behind her, at moderate speed.
After half an hour, they reached their destination. It was a Lakehouse in the middle of the area, And it was interestingly creepy and quiet.
"Are you sure we should be here?" Logan asked Camila after their first knock.
Camila rolled her eyes on him. "Can you just quit blabbing for a minute, at least?"
Logan made a gesture as if to say. “whatever, you are the boss”
And after three more knocks on the door, Camila raised her voice. "Anyone at home?!" She knocked again. Getting furious, she took some steps back at the balcony.
"What are you doing?" She raised Logan's curiosity.
"I hate waiting!" She scoffed and charged to leg down the door, but halfway, the door opened to a middle aged muscular man, and she backed down.
But he wasn't so muscular— he was Puerto Rican, and had a wavy ebony hairstyle. "Who are you people?" He asked in a low soft but hostile tone.
"Do you know this man?" Camila showed him a picture of Jacques.
He scanned through the picture and back at her with an uncertain look, and opened the door for them to come in.
Logan sat down on the couch near him. The interior looked like there was no one living in it. But Camila, she was good at looking around.
She took to touring the house and the framed pictures of Jacques and his friend got her best attention.
"What's your name?" She asked, taking up a picture they took at the beach while memories of her and Jacques flashed in front of her face.
"Is Joel" he answered, bringing three bottles of beer with him.
"Seems like you were closer to Jacques than I was…" Camila said, turning to him to grab a bottle while Logan threw a look at her. Joel raised a bottle to him.
"Oh, no. I will pass this one, thanks"
"Take a seat, Joel. We have a lot to talk about"
Joel took a seat, he looked like he knew that the day would come when he would talk about Jacques. He sat down on a single-sit facing them both. "I have all the time on earth" he said, pouring all the content of the bottle into his mouth.
"Do you know of anyone who Jacques knows that might know the insider—"
     "Who are you?"
Camila and Logan shared a look. "I am Jacques' friend. And I am sure that you know that Jacques is very well dead"
"Yea, old news. He got himself killed"
"What do you mean he got himself killed?"
"I tried to warn him, but he didn't listen…" he stood up and went to the freezer. Removed the main freezer compartment and retrieved a file, which he passed on to Camila.
"What is this?" Camila asked, flipping through the pages.
"See for yourself," Joel said with a shrug.
Camila buried her face into the files and as she flipped through the pages, slowly digesting the information, she wrinkled her face through confusion. "No- no, this, this can't be" she stammered.
Logan's curiosity was heightened. "Can I see that?" She cornered it to Logan and hit her hands on the table. "Easy…" Logan said to her before digesting the information in the file.
    "Wow, Jacques was a mouse"
"And I was just a fucking fool in the mouse trap" Camila lamented.
"You see, Jacques had this master plan, I didn't buy it, but he was working against the organisation, whatever it was, he sold them out, I guess they had every reason to take him out…" he shrugged.
"He was like a mole, and you know what? He had a backup plan. There was this person he talked about like every time, he made it look like she was his world and he wouldn't do anything to hurt her, but that was the very thing he was doing…"
"He had a wife? Or girlfriend?" Camila asked.
"No, no. It was his partner, his very closest partner, and she was his back up plan"
Camila looked at the file on Logan's wield. Logan slid it behind his back and shook his head. He knew what would happen if she got to read everything from the papers, although she had already found out.
Camila stood up and brushed her hand against her face, pacing around the room. "So, Jacques, they came for Jacques, not me…"
Joel wondered what she was talking about. "What is she talking about?" He asked Logan.
Logan made a gesture as if to say “well”
"And they used me to draw him out. And he was using me too" she stopped, inhaled and exhaled. "I trusted Jacques with my life!" She raged, scattering everything within her reach.
"He used me! He fucking used me!" She continued her rampage.
"Hey! What is your problem? You are destroying my home. Whatever problem you have isn't me! Leave, now! …" He looked at Logan. "You too" he commanded.
Camila charged at him and immediately grabbed him by the neck. Seeing him wiggle and hearing him choke, satisfied her pain.
"What are you doing?" Logan jacked up.
"Getting rid of this trash" she hollered.
He didn't have to be reminded that Camila didn't see worth in human life and she could easily take one, especially when she was angry. And she really was angry. "No, no no…" Logan intervened. "We just got a lead and you are going to kill him?"
"Logan…" she faced him. "Jacques betrayed me. The only human being I trusted. He used me, I took him as a brother, as my everything, but it was all a game, me, Logan, me…" she looked like she was deeply hurt.
"I feel you, I really do. I hope you don't get to trust human beings anymore…" it was easy for him to say so, because he wasn't one of them. "I'm sorry, Camila.
But you have got to let go. We have a mission to accomplish, killing him won't do us any good, please…" he walked closer to her, looking into her eyes; he was her only medicine, and it worked.
Camila slowly freed his neck from her hand's tight grasp. He coughed for a while trying to release the pressure from his neck.
"So what now?" Camila said to Logan.
"Fuck this shit, not saying more…" Joel brought a gun and clicked it to her hearing. Logan's eyes widened and his heart beat rate slowed down; Joel was going to pull the trigger. But in that instant, Camila swayed her arm over, and hit him on his stomach, grabbing the gun out of his hold and directing it at his head.
      "Who are you!?" Joel trembled.
"Camila fucking Lipa…" she motioned to shoot…
      "Stop!" Logan rushed at her…
"Oh go to hell Logan…" she hit him on his chest with full force, and with the pressure he had with the rush, Camila knocked him out and he took the door with him falling outside the house while a stick penetrated his rib. And multiple gunshots followed.
Logan pulled himself up with a groan. He couldn't figure out what just happened, but he found himself outside of the house with a stick damaging his ribcage.
"Ughhhh!" He growled as he pulled it out of his body and tweaked his bones to heal, but it was painful though.
He watched Camila walk out of the house and motioned to enter the car. Glancing at him, she did nothing else but "Meeting at your house" she said to Logan and drove off.
