"Fall out!" The husky voices roared continuously, followed with the ear deafening cry of the prison alarm calls which saw to the automated opening of every prison cell. I got up from bed, tilting my head to both sides to crack my neck; it felt good, it does. Not if it's someone else doing it to you. I walked out ftom the cell, stood at the passage and watched everyone match around. I counted my breathing and followed the rythm, for what seemed to last a moment, I knew that I had to adapt to the conditions of living as the only female in men's penitentiary. "I will survive, no matters what. This is what I do most, isn't it?" I said to myself as I walked down to join the others. Once I stepped into the hall, I continued my soliloquy. "I'm a survivor, aren't I?..." But I would be disturbed by a bad-belle prison guard. "Hey, you!" I turned my face to him and said no word. "Get to the field, it's labour day. There's so much to do, don't just stand there! Get moving!" "What? Wh- what am I supposed to do?" A furrow in-between my eyes followed. "Cut down the trees, dig the ground, stack the bricks, whatever you can get your hands on!" "I'm a woman!" I protested. "Maybe I will notice that once you stop whining about it, get moving!" He ordered. "No, I ain't doing shit!" "What did you just say?" He flung out his baton and walked toward me. "You heard her right, warden" a husky and familiar voice interfered and he matched toward us. I immediately felt that it wasn't who I should be seeing, but to satisfy my claims, I took some turns and met his wild face, I sighed and walked behind the warden, murmuring, "I will pass" "So, what can I do today for our dear and lovely institution?" I asked the warden with a grin. He walked away, and I followed closely behind, putting my rear to good use, making sure Lacasa wasn't on my tail, you know. "I would rather spend the day working on straineus jobs than spend even a minute with my potential rapist and torturer. **** “Take the day off, take the day off, take the day off” were the words that kept ringing in my head for a quick action. But I couldn't, could I? I wish I could! Not only was my stomach grumbling under the weight of the job, I was directly under the sun's violent delight. Being in a desert wasn't enough. The land was full of shit, shitty heavyweight jobs. "Can't believe that I'm doing this!" I said through clenched teeth, raising my head to clean the bitter sweat flowing all over my face and stopping to say a bitter and salty hello to my eyes. It was fucking painful! "I can't believe this!" I growled. With anger and frustration, I lifted up a brick and set it on the stacks with force. I stood and watched a stack of bricks, of about 2 metres in height, fall row by row till 10 rows of bricks that was at my neck level all collapsed. I gulped, ready to tear down, I could hear the devil laughing at me, pushing tears from the valley of hell, alongside heated anger from hell fire to descend out of me. "Arggghh!!!!" I yelled out loud, clenching my teeth and fists which I pulled off at the collapsed bricks and carelessly broke my hand, and fumed off pain, again. I was immediately made the center of attraction, and the new job. I glanced at their faces and my eyes clocked at the face of an angry warden, and he was coming at me. "What are you doing!?" He growled. "Shit!" I looked around to see if I could run; I couldn't, so I settled to re-stacking. "Hey sir, I will do it, don't worry, I will do the job. I will complete it in no time…" the words pierced into my ears and I directed my eyes out. "Huh?" He was an old man, not so old, he looked fourty but would be maybe sixty years old and he reasoned with the Warden to help me tidy up the work. I was surprised to see it all unfold, and more surprised when he came to me, thought I wasn't the one. "It happens. Don't beat yourself so much" his voice itself was nice, kind and undisturbed. He looked like he hasn't touched his facial hairs in years. He looked calm. Taken aback by his kind gesture, I couldn't say a word to him until he started putting the bricks together again, and all I could say was "why are you helping me?" He barely smiled. "Helping out a young lady" he replied. I nodded my head. "And why?" He stopped and looked at me. "do I need a reason to do some good?" "No,you don't" "Do you?" He asked. "Umm…" it was a hard question, because I don't even do good things to talk of having a reason. "Nevermind." He went back to it. "And don't worry about me, I'm naturally strong" he said with a light smile. "That's if you care" "Of course, I do…" I chuckled, and thought about it for a second. "I really do now" I muttered to myself. "I was just wondering, what got you in here?" "Oh, trust me, you wouldn't want to know" "Come on, you might be the least monstrous here" I chuckled. "I doubt that" "Well you don't look the part" he said, turning back to take a better glance at me, after which he shook his head and went back to the work. He was surprisingly strong and fast for his age. "What about you? What did you do? How long have you been here?" "Two decades" "What the fuck!?" Another alarm went off and everyone left their works, taking only their tools with them. "What's that?" I asked him. "Time to go inside. Come on" "What's your name Sir?" I asked him, once we started walking out. "Russ. By the way, it's also an alarm for new prisoners, guess more people would be spending decades here"
