Chapter 38 Vincenzo’s savior

“I should take a bite? This is your breakfast, Roberto. I have mine in the kitchen.” Martina responded. She knew Roberto didn’t trust her to the extent of eating the meal she had made.
“I’ll not eat this food until you have tasted it. I’m not stupid, Martina. You want to kill me but, it’s not possible.”
Martina broke into laughter and folded her arms under her breasts, raising her robe so that her fair and fresh thighs were visible.
“Don’t tell me the great Roberto Galante is scared of food poisoning.”
“Why would food poisoning scare me? I’ve been surviving my whole life, and that is because I am a wise man. Now, take a bite!”
Martina shrugged her shoulders and sat on the dining chair in front of her. She stretched her hand and picked one of the chicken laps. She dipped it into the kitchen bowl and moved it to her mouth.
She locked her eyes with Roberto’s and tore some meat from the bone sexily. She started munching on it and kept her gaze on Roberto.
Roberto’s eyes got to work once again. They trailed down her face and fell on her full breasts. They looked so smooth and soft. He could see her nipples trying to hide under the silk fabric, but unfortunately, it wasn’t working. He could see how pointy they were.
Martina noticed his gaze on her breasts, and she stood up slowly, bending forward so that her cleavage could be more visible.
“Now you are convinced I didn’t poison your food. I’m not as ruthless as you are.”
Roberto’s eyes moved from her breast and fell on her face. She walked away and kept eating the chicken in her hand.
She walked down the hallway and began to think about Vincenzo again.
“I need to apologize to him. I said things I shouldn’t have.” She said to herself. She saw one of Roberto’s men hanging around, and she approached him.
“Hi. Please, can you tell me where Vincenzo’s room is?” She inquired. He turned back and pointed to a door at her right hand.
“Thank you so much.”
“He isn’t in his room if you are looking for him. He is with Bruno.” He informed.
“Bruno? Where is Bruno?”
“The last room down the passage.” He responded, and Martina bobbed her head.
“Thank you.” She divulged a smile, and he gave a slight bow before walking away.
Martina hurried down the hallway and headed to the last room. She got there in no time and knocked on the door.
“Come in.” She heard Vincenzo’s voice. She exhaled loudly and turned the doorknob. She walked into the room and saw Bruno lying on the bed. Vincenzo sat next to him, and a first aid kit was in front of him.
Vincenzo stared at her for some seconds and turned his face away. He continued wrapping Bruno’s hand.
“Bruno, how are you feeling now?”
She moved closer to the bed and folded her fingers as she did.
“I am better now, Martina, all thanks to Vincenzo.” He responded, and Martina grinned feebly. She looked at Vincenzo again. She didn’t know what to say to him but, wanted to talk to him, and she did. “And you? How are you feeling?” She asked.
“I’m fine. Thanks for asking.” He packed the first aid kit and placed it in the drawer that was next to the bed.
“Thank you, Vincenzo. Please can you help me call Greco in on your way out?” Bruno asked.
“Yes, I can. You should rest well. I’ll order breakfast for you.”
“No, you don’t have to. I fried enough chicken. Do you want some?”
Bruno smiled and bounced his games. “I’ll be very pleased, Martina. It's been a while since I tasted homemade chicken.”
Martina giggled at his response and bounced her head.
“I’ll serve you soon.”
Vincenzo took one last look at her and walked out of the room. Martina heaved a sigh and waved at Bruno before she walked out of the room.
“Vincenzo!” She called as soon as she got outside the room. She saw him walking briskly to his room. He halted immediately he heard her call his name.
“Why can’t you let me be?” He thought to himself. He refused to look back, and he heard her run to where he stood.
“Why are you ignoring me, Vincenzo?” She stood in front of him and looked into his eyes. He kept mute and just stared back at her.
Martina lowered her head in guilty and spoke up again. “Can we talk?”
“We are talking, Martina. Moreover, there is nothing to discuss.” He responded coldly.
“Look, Vincenzo… I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t mean those words last night. I…”
“Oh please. Martina, don’t give me that. You meant all that you said.” He walked out of her face and opened his room door.
“No! I swear I wasn’t myself, and I didn’t think before I said those things.” She rushed into the room before he could shut the door.
“Martina, please, I am not in the mood for all these this morning. I am not ignoring you because I have anything against you. I’m ignoring you because it’s the best thing for both of us.”
“No, Vincenzo. I’m sorry. I’m sorry for hurting you. I’m sorry for making your eyes water in pain.” She moved closer to him, and he moved away.
He shut his eyes tight as he felt his eyes heat up again. He turned his back to her and began to shed tears. They rolled out of his eyes without control.
“I never knew you had feelings for me. You have been so nice to me, and I should never have talked to you the way I did. I’m sorry.”
“It was a mistake, and I’m going to correct it. I am not mad at you, Martina. I’m hurt.”
Martina’s eyes heated up, and she shuffled towards him. She embraced him from behind and wept.
“You are the friendliest person here, Vincenzo. I’m sorry for saying those awful things to you. It would never happen again.” She mumbled.
Vincenzo held her hands that she wrapped around his torso and turned to look at her. Martina saw his face was with tears, and she felt more guilty.
“It’s okay.” His voice was soft and tender. He embraced her, and she hid her face in his chest.
“Have you forgiven me? Will you eat my chicken now? I made it because of you.” She muttered, and Fighter chuckled in tears.
“I’ll eat your chicken. Stop crying already. I’m not as strong as you think I am.” He responded, and she giggled.
“It’s quite obvious. You are quick to shed tears and this surprises me. Why are you so fragile?” She raised her head and looked into his eyes.
“I don’t know, Martina. I was created like this. I am not the strong man I portray myself to be most times.” He sat on the bed, and Martina sat next to him.
“But how do you cope with working for Roberto then? He is ruthless. How are you not broken all the time?”
“I am always broken but there is nothing I can do about it. I am his assistant, and he trusts me more than anyone else. I can’t betray him.”
“So you have to put up with his annoying attitude until you die?”
“Yes, Martina. He isn’t as bad as you think he is. He just scares people away.”
“I can never believe that. He is a bad person. Don’t try to cover up for him.” Martina responded, and Vincenzo sighed.
“I have been working with Mr. Roberto for about ten years now. The first time we met was during a war between two Mafia groups. One of these Mafia groups was led by Giovanni Galante, Roberto's father. I was 25 years old then, and my father was a member of the other Mafia group.” He looked at Martina to see if she was following him, and she nodded for him to continue.
“The leader of the Mafia group my father was, did a terrible thing to Roberto’s Father, and this caused the war. I wasn’t aware of what he did, and I’m still not aware. But my father told me he did bad. Giovanni was furious and began to kill everyone and their families in my Father’s group.”
“I was scared he was going to kill my Family too. So, I ran to Roberto for help. I knew he was the only one that could talk to Giovanni. He promised to help me if I worked for him, and I didn’t think twice before saying yes.”
Vincenzo stopped talking and looked at Martina. He saw the serious look she had on her face.
“And what happened? Did Giovanni kill your family?” She asked anxiously.
“No, he didn’t. But another Mafia group did after Giovanni died. Roberto hunted this Mafia group and killed all of them without mercy.”
Martina sighed after listening to Vincenzo’s story. She then understood why Vincenzo would never go against Roberto. He was his Savior.
