Chapter 14

Rolland
I thought of Amelia again, I wonder if she got the food I sent to her. I had wanted to ignore her when I heard her stomach rumble but I couldn't. I wonder what is with her that I find irresistible. My throat felt dry and I stood up from my bed to get some water. My laptop beeped as I got an email and I was forced to check the time. It was 2am in the morning, I wondered who could send a message by that time, then it occurred to me that I had given Amelia a document to summarize. I felt guilty because I have deprived her of sleep as she was still awake by that time of the day.
Nevertheless, I looked into the message and I must say, I'm pleased with the work she did. I went back to sleep after checking the message and slept back to wake up around 6 in the morning.

I paced up and down Amelia's room, wondering what must have kept her at work. Her number rang severally, but she was not picking up. I took the risk of going to the company that evening, but it was locked. I hope my suspicion does not become true. I slept on the couch in the living room, waiting for her to come back, but she didn't.
As early as 6am, I reported sick at work and left in search of Amelia again in her company. I have not told her mother because I know she will surely freak out. I stopped in front of her company and entered to Meet Jennifer. Jennifer from the club, I never knew she worked here and Amelia did not tell me. I explained the situation to her and she agreed to ride up the elevator with me.

I stopped in front of the company and walked right in. Everyone bowed in respect and I kept a straight face as usual. I felt an arm around me and turned to meet my best friend, Steve.
"Hi Rolly" he chirped and I shook my head. I'm not in the mood for his troubles this morning. "How's your beautiful PA?" He asked again.
He was actually the one that selected Amelia as he was the third man on the day of the interview.
I decided to snub him as we rode the elevator, yet he kept talking. The door opened and I walked straight to my office. I noticed Amelia's desk was scattered with papers although the janitors have cleaned up the office and most importantly, she was absent.
I turned back to my office door when my eyes caught her handbag on the table. Her phone was vibrating by the side. I don't know why but I was tempted to check on the caller.
I shrieked in fright at what I saw instead. It was Amelia sleeping quietly, her head on her seat and her hair scattered all over her face. I noticed she was still on the clothes she wore yesterday. Don't tell me she spent the night in the company. Guilt came over me again and I regretted making her suffer.
"What's your PA doing on the floor this early morning?" Steve asked. Just then, the receptionist and another lady ran towards us.
"Melly!!!" The other lady screamed as she crouched down to her level and began to shake her, but she was not responding. The guilt turned to fear as the briefcase I was holding fell to the ground.

I began to shake vigorously as I watched the strange lady try to revive Amelia. I was filled with fear and regret and the memories began to replay.
****Flashback ****
I entered the living room to find my mother sprawled on the floor with her favorite coffee beside her. Tears filled my eyes as I watched her, she was weak and helpless. I scooped her in my arm and she smiled when she noticed my presence. She was obviously fighting for her life as she found it hard to speak.
"Talk to me mom, what happened to you!?, who did this to you!?" I yelled in tears, hugging her close to my chest. Her mouth opened and I leaned in, "Run, Run away son" she said before slumping.
I shook her but she did not bulge. I felt her pulse, it was gone. Her face was pale and white, that was when it hit me. She was dead. She died in my arms.
End of flashback .

Tears fell from my eyes and I didn't know what came over me. I pushed the lady away from her and carried Amelia in my arms as I headed for the elevator but it was not functioning. I hit it in frustration and headed for the stairs.
"Get the car ready Steven!" I yelled moving as fast as my leg could go. My driver pulled up in front of the company and I hopped in with her still in my arms. I hugged her to myself and prayed for her survival.
We got to the hospital some minutes later and she was taken into the unit where she will be checked. I sat down with my head in between my legs as I was  deeply worried. After the death of my mother, I vowed to never let another person die on my watch.
