The Last Laugh 8

“All right, I will get him,” she agreed. Then, she joyously and pretentiously called out as she walked up the staircase.
“Hubby.”
Now, she was determined to barge into his room, not minding how he would react.
“Hubby,” she called out again and knocked. Then, she waited for his response and when he did not, she called out again and pushed the door with a mild force and got in.
“Bruno,” she called out, and her eyes scanned the room for her husband. She grimaced when she noticed his unused bed.
“Bruno, where are you?” She called again and walked to the bathroom and looked out for him. She walked briskly to his study and pushed the open, and was disappointed.
“When did he leave the house?” She murmured. To avoid keeping Silas waiting, she shut the door after she got off the room and walked back to the parlor. Nevertheless, Silas and his orderly were surprised when she returned alone. Then, she called on the janitor and inquired, “Where is your boss?” “He is not back yet,” the janitor responded innocently. “Back from where? When did he leave the house?” Susan, who was certain that she did not hear his door open that day, inquired.
Now, Silas and his orderly were attentive. Then, the janitor responded, “I have no idea of where he had gone to. He left the house last night.”
Before that day, Susan had covered up the cold war between her and her husband, and she had no inkling that everything would be made bare that day and, above all, in the presence of visitors.
“How come I'm just hearing it?” She let out in anguish. Nevertheless, Silas assumed that she was aware of the twenty-four hours injunction to quit the apartment and divulged, “The twenty-four hours mandate to vacate the premises elapsed a few minutes ago. I have come to take inventory of the items in the house, and retrieve the keys.” Then, without expecting any reaction, he took a step to walk further into the house and to his astonishment, Susan collapsed at once. “What!” he exclaimed after he halted. “Oh my God!” the orderly exclaimed too and rushed to her aid. Now, the chef and the janitor noticed the incident and rushed to the scene, and they assisted by positioning her on her back. “Remove the cap,” the orderly advised.
Now, Cindy and Camilla were through with their tutorial and walked to the parlor. They were aghast at the scene, and Camilla screamed, “Mom.” “What happened?” Cindy asked in fear and trepidation, looking at the chef. To calm their anxieties, the chef announced, “It is not what you think. She would be fine.”
“She needs to see the doctor,” Silas stated.
At the Hotel
Before noon, Bruno had been linked up three times by the janitor and was glad that he was not cashless. At noon, he smirked and mumbled, “I can't wait to see the post of how Sarah and her daughters would be humiliated out of the house. She thinks she is smart.”
Meanwhile, his joy was short-lived when the janitor called his attention, “Bros, what did you do wrong. The manager of the hotel is not happy with you.”
“Why?” Bruno asked anxiously. “I heard him asking the reception why he allowed you to pick their guests. I think he had no idea that your boss is in the room.”
However, Bruno realized that he had exhausted his lifeline and calmly replied, “That is not an issue. My boss just called me and requested that I should pick some things from the supermarket for him, I will be right back.” “It is okay.”
At once, Bruno drove out of the hotel and was glad that he was fifty-two thousand Naira richer than when he arrived.
At the Hotel Reception
Nevertheless, the manager of the hotel interrogated the receptionist about the strange driver, who refused to face his work but used their hotel as a business point and picked their guests. Meanwhile, the logistics companies, who were duly registered with the hotel, were irked with the sudden appearance of a new driver and called the attention of the management.
“Which room is the boss of that greedy driver occupying?” The manager inquired angrily from the receptionist.
“I will check from my records and revert.”
“Do that quickly. You have to ask him to stop his driver from disrupting the smooth flow of our work.”
“I got you, Sir.”
Then, the receptionist looked through his records and could not find a guest with such a car. He looked through the surveillance to take another look at the registration number of the nuisance, but he was gone.
“I can't find the car,” the receptionist reverted. “He must have been hired by another guest again,” the manager burst out, and walked out of the reception. He headed angrily to the gatehouse, and when he arrived, he warned, “Officers, keep your eyes on that black Honda that was parked at the car park. Kindly let me know whenever the driver is around.” “All right, manager.”
On the Road
After Bruno drove out of the Hotel, he drove into a nearby mall and parked. He took time to ponder on the happenings of the past two and the money he had wasted.
“This is madness. Why do I have to wait for another person to deal with, someone I could deal with by myself? I would have simply poisoned him?”
Later on, his thought drifted to Sharon and he lamented over the deceit.
“So she wasn't pregnant? Or did she miscarry the pregnancy?” He mumbled. He remembered the information he got from his first passenger that morning and pondered, “Does she want to get married to another man other than me as we agreed?” “Why would she sleep with a laundry man? Without a condom at that.” Nevertheless, Bruno never attributed the supposed laundry man to the man, who wished to marry her.
After much thought, he was unable to find answers to the questions and he took a decision. “Two can play the game.”
