The Last Laugh 12

On that note, he drafted an application letter, which was more of an apology letter. He stated that he needed the job badly because he had a family to take care of. He concluded the application with a sympathetic story. (… Do recall your assurance that I am free to reapply. Presently, my children are at home. I cannot afford to send them back to school because of my predicament. Yours truly, Bruno Angus.) Thereafter, he sent the application to the dedicated email address and walked into the house after concealing his stress.
At the Group Managing Director's Office.
The Human Resources Manager, Faye Charlie, a thirty-two years old, lively lady, walked into his office.
“Good day, GMD,” she greeted.
“Good day, madam. Kindly take your seat,” Evans responded.
“Thank you. Congratulations once again.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Charlie. What brings you.”
“Thank you, Sir. My clerk called my attention to the application letter she got this afternoon in the application bank, and I feel you should know about it.” She paused and looked at the GMD for his reaction, and he urged, “Go on.”
She narrated the content of Bruno's application to him, and he requested, “I see. He was here a few hours ago. Kindly forward it to me.”
“All right, boss.” Faye did that, and Evans read through and smiled at his fabricated story. Nevertheless, Faye was not aware of Evans' reason for smiling. She was not aware of Susan's ill-health and Bruno's disappearance from the house. After reading through the story, he looked at Faye and instructed, “Keep it in view and let's see what happens.”
“I would rather suggest that we don't keep it in view at all. Mr. Angus should not come back for any reason, especially now that we are independent of the Headquarters.”
“Why do you think so, Mrs. Charlie?”
“Bruno is brutal and a destroyer. He would have sold this company long ago if not that he could not access the headquarters. Now, it would be easier for him.”
“I see. But I have made my promise. I never planned to reinstate him as a General Manager. He may not have the opportunity to sell the company as you feared.”
“Sir, even as a janitor, I don't think we are safe. I know him more than anyone else. He is a dangerous man to work with. He is coming back, deadlier and mean.”
Now, Evans took a deep breath and inquired, “How do I make up for my promise? It is not in my nature to broke my promises.”
“I understand, boss. We will think of something else.”
In dejection, Evans sank into his seat and stared at Faye. He recalled how Bruno's wife wept the day he visited her at the clinic, and he got an epiphany. Then, he stopped Faye, who was about to get up and leave.
“Hold on, Mrs. Charlie.”
She sat back on the chair at once and focused on the GMD. Then he spoke, “I am aware that it is not allowed for husband and wife to work in our organization.”
“You are right, boss.”
“Good. Since Bruno was sacked, I don't think that employing his wife will go contrary to our policy.”
At that moment, Faye's face beamed, and she responded with delight, “Not at all. Besides, I don't think it would provoke the envy of other staff members, who would want their spouses to be employed as well.”
“Even if they are provoked, you can defend your actions by claiming that you employed her on compassionate ground.”
“You are right, boss. If they insist that their spouses should be employed, they should be sacked first.”
They laughed softly and Evans instructed. “Go ahead and inform Mr. Tony Benedict that he is now the General Manager and create an opportunity for Mrs. Angus.”
“I got it, boss,” Faye declared, and got up. The GMD got up too.
“I beg to take my leave.” “It is okay. I appreciate your concern.”
At the General Manager's House.
After work, Mrs. Charlie stopped over to see Susan. Since she was just recovering from her shock, some days, she spent a fewer hour at her fashion shop and return home to take her rest. Fortunately, that day, she was at home and was startled when she saw an official car from the organization stopped in front of her house.
'What has happened?' she mumbled and watched the janitor open the ingress and egress gate for her.
“Good evening, madam,” Faye greeted warmly, which assuaged Susan's fear.
“Good evening, Madam. I'm glad to have you. Kindly take your seat.”
“Thank you.”
Mrs. Charlie appreciated and took her seat. Then, she made known her purpose of visit to her, and she could not believe her good fortune, and she appreciated, “Thank you, madam, for this.”
“You are welcome. It was the GMD's idea. If you are willing to take advantage of the vacant position, do let me know so that I can revert.”
“I'm most willing to take the offer,” Susan accepted.
“That's good. Kindly forward your resume to this email.”
“I will.” Thereafter, the Human Resources Manager left.
Two Months Later.
Bruno had eagerly waited for the news of Susan's ejection, but he got none.
“She must have moved to the suburb,” he thought and smiled in triumph. Meanwhile, he had requested that the EFCC boss should unfreeze his account, which he granted with advice.
“Be wise in your dealings. Don't always think that you can buy people over with money.”
“I will always remember that, Mr. Job.”
He returned to Sharon's house that day, elated. Meanwhile, he hoped that the Blue Sea would have invited him to resume his work, but he was disappointed.
“It is over two months. What is keeping them?” He thought. Meanwhile, the IGP had sacked Mr. Bello and appointed a new one. Bruno attempted to reach him, but to no avail.
“He must return my money,” he concluded.
Now, Sharon was ill and needed to see the doctor.
“You have been feverish, Sharon. Don't you think that you need to see the doctor?” Bruno asked with concern.
“I will be fine,” she said and rested her head on his chest. After much persuasion, she consented to see a doctor.
