The Funeral 26

“Open the gate for us, we are on duty.” The security guards called out after they waited for a response and none came. Nevertheless, Shane and his partner ignored them by pretending not to hear. Meanwhile, Barry, whose security traits made him to wake up every night and walk around his environment, was up since 1 Am. He was attracted by the knock at the gate, and walked towards it.
“I hope these boys have not slept off.” He asked himself while he walked along. To his dismay, the two guards were standing and ignored the sound from the gate.
“Are you deaf? Didn't you hear the knock on the gate?” Barry scolded.
Now, Oliver was awake and heard the knock too. The money conscious guards ignored Barry's question and asked, “Our time is up, and we want to leave. Who is with our money?”
“What! These boys have guts,” Oliver exclaimed.
“Did you hear my question?” The surprised Barry inquired. Then, Shane's partner requested, “If you are the person who will pay us, just pay us? Our time is up.”
“Why can't they open the gate? Is it not their duty to do that?” Oliver, who was already behind Barry, mumbled.
Now, Shane, was at the door of the gatehouse. He attempted to walk out as if Barry was not there, but he regretted it.
“Slap. Open the gate.” Barry ordered. All the same, Shane walked out of the gatehouse and stood by the gate, holding his aching cheek. Then, his partner, who was still in the gatehouse, boldly asked again, “How can we open the gate when you have…?”
Now, Barry put his phone in his pocket and walked into the gatehouse. He slapped the foul-mouthed guard, who wanted to remind him that he had not paid him for the hours that he had worked and expected him to work further. To teach him the lesson that he would not forget in a rush, he slapped him several times, and he cried like a baby. Afterward, he dragged him outside the gatehouse and ordered, “Go down on your knees and raise your two hands.”
Now, he saw Barry's intimidating aura, and to avoid more slaps, he obeyed at once. Then, Barry looked at Shane, who stood idly beside the gate and thundered, “I said open the gate.”
Now, Shane was fear stricken when he saw his colleague's bruised face and how he was crying like a baby. Then, he resolved to behave himself. He walked towards the gatehouse to pick up the bunch of keys that was on the table. Unfortunately, Barry misinterpreted his move for disobedience and hit his cheeks simultaneously. Thereafter, he kicked his two legs off the ground, and he fell at once.
“Ouch!” He screamed in pain. “Kneel and raise your two hands, quickly.” Barry ordered, and he obeyed immediately.
“Can these boys be this disrespectful?” The astounded Oliver, who had been watching them silently, mumbled. Meanwhile, the guards, who just reported to work, were listening to all that was happening in the compound.
“Oliver, open the gate,” the aggrieved Barry ordered.
“Okay Sir. The key is on the table. I want to pick it.” Oliver informed. Now, Barry was closer to the bunch than Oliver, walked to the table and picked the key. Then, he tossed it to him and he caught it.
“Thank you for the key,” he appreciated. Then he walked closer to the gate and demanded, “Who are you and what do you want?”
“We are Justin and Gerry. We are on duty.”
“Go back. There is no work for you.” Barry thundered.
“What's up, Barry?” Fredrick, whose sleep was disturbed by the noise, inquired from the balcony. Barry walked up to meet him and narrated all that happened.
“Throw them out of the compound right now,” Fredrick instructed without thinking twice, and everyone heard him.
“I got it, boss.”
Now, the drivers were up and out of their rooms. They walked after Barry, who walked back to the gate and collected the key from Oliver and opened the pedestrian gate. Without wasting time, the two errant guards ran out of the gate.
“This job is to assist these young men.” One of the drivers pointed out.
“You are right. Otherwise, what do they really do?” Another agreed.
Now, Oliver was scared because he could not imagine his fate. He feared that the sins of his colleagues would ruin his job and he may be thrown out like them.
“Take the key, Oliver. I don't want to see any guards in this compound. Did you get me?” Barry, who was breathing rapidly, blurted in anger before he walked away, and the drivers followed him.
“I got you Sir,” Oliver, who had calmed down, responded. He walked into the gatehouse and sat on the reading chair.
“What came over Shane and his colleagues? Did they plan to be rude to their employers? How many times did they open the gate since they reported to work?” Oliver mulled over the saga. To his advantage, he had the gatehouse to himself. He slept on the single chair and battled with mosquitoes all through the night. At least, it was better than sleeping in the open courtyard.
In the Morning
He was woken by the rooster, and he heard the drivers talking among themselves. Then, he walked up to them and greeted, “A good morning to you.”
“Good morning to you, young man. I hope that you slept well?” Richard, Evans' driver, inquired.
“Yes Sir. I slept well. I can be of assistance if you permit me.” He volunteered when he noticed that they were about to wash the cars.
“Thank you, young man. What is your name?” Bartholomew, Fredrick's driver, inquired.
“My name is Oliver,” he responded cheerfully.
“It is all right. Let's wash the cars together.” Bartholomew said. Now, Oliver was happy being useful, unlike Shane and his friend who sat idle for eight hours. He washed the cars along with them, and afterward, he tidied up the porcelain tiled compound. Then, he returned to the gatehouse and washed himself as much as he could and waited for further instructions.
“Good morning Sir,” he greeted Barry, who was calmer and dressed to go out.
“Good morning, Oliver. I hope that you slept well?” He inquired cheerfully.
“I slept well, Sir.” “That is good.”
Now, to give Bartholomew the opportunity to round up, he resolved to while away the time by strolling around. Since his arrival the previous day, he had not left the courtyard.
“Queue up. There is no need to fight,” he counseled the water seekers who had messed up the front of the compound. Besides, it would be difficult for him to drive out because of the number of people at the gate. When they were unfazed, he repeated himself.
“Stop fighting and maintain orderliness.”
Meanwhile, no one was ready to obey, that is, if they heard him or recognized his presence. He concluded that settling the matter was a walk in the park and returned to the compound.
“Damian, which tank supplies water to the taps outside,” Barry inquired.
“The first one,” Damian, Callum's driver, who arrived before the others said, and signaled to the tank.
“Thank you for informing me,” Barry appreciated, and walked to the tank. He turned off the tank and the taps outside the compound ceased to flow. Now, the fighting outside increased because those without water would not allow those with water to leave. After the fight, everyone left without water. Nevertheless, Oliver, who head the noise at the gate, heard his mother's voice and waited for the worst. When the noise ceased, he looked out through the window and exclaimed.
