Chapter 19 All In My Head

DEVON
"Well, looks like we have company" Theo said as Allen approached us with a sneer on his face.
"Bad timing" I groaned.
"Hey, we can still watch movies from Netflix later" he said as he took out some sort of whip from his hair, sending his hair spilling over his shoulder and down his back.
"Don't hurt him, please" I said and he nodded.
Allen launched himself at Theo but was immediately bound by Theo's whip.
He growled, black eyes menacing.
"Let me go!"
Rolling his eyes, Theo cracked the whip hard and Allen slumped to the ground, unconscious. Theo hoisted him over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
"Come on, we have to get him to Luke" he said.
"How is Luke going to be of help?" I asked as we got into the car.
"Luke is a rare kind of fae..... maybe almost as rare as I am. He's a silver light bearer and a soul whisperer. It means, he can detach and reattach souls" he said, buckling up his seat belt.
"That's a nice gift" I said and he grinned.
We got to Theo's house few minutes later. I called my mum to tell her that I was going to be spending the night at Theo's.
"Ah, look what the cat dragged in" Luke said, rubbing his palms together.
"I'm not a cat, Luke" Theo said, rolling up the sleeves of his shirt.
"You don't need to remind me, your majesty" Luke said, grinning. Theo rolled his eyes and took out four short knives with some strange markings on them. He began to draw what looked like a pentacle with the knives.
Luke moved Allen into the circle and stood back.
"Alright, all set" Theo said, moving aside.
Luke's eyes turned a glowing silver color with black slits for pupils. His blonde hair had turned silver and he looked incredibly mysterious that way.
Allen's eyes shot open, his eyes gleaming like onyx stones.
Luke started to speak in a very strange language. To my surprise, Allen or whatever was in him was speaking back.
Luke looked like he was enjoying himself, he even had a smirk on his face. Annoying bastard.
"Here comes the interesting part" I said, sarcasm dripping from my voice.
Theo chuckled.
"You look pretty annoyed" he said. "I don't know. Maybe, it's because Allen or the evil soul just ruined our first date?" I said.
"We can still make up for that, love. You don't have to worry" he said, smiling at me. I couldn't help but smile back. He was so adorable, I just wanted to pinch his cheeks.
I watched Allen writhe on the floor, his face ghostly pale. My eyes drifted to Luke who was speaking faster at this point. But then, a strange emotion enveloped me. Hatred.
An intense loathing towards Luke spread through my veins like hot lava.
'Stab him through the heart with silver knife..... it's the only thing that can kill him' said the voice in my head.
I paled instantly when I recognized the voice.
Barza
The bitch was in my head again. I took slow steps backwards, my heart thudding madly.
'No, no. Not again' I groaned inwardly.
I wanted to tell Theo about this. He had to know what was going on. Theo's gaze met mine and I shivered.
'He won't believe you, Bitch. Just like he won't believe that your pendant is gone. He'll think of you as reckless, careless and a liar'
'I won't let her get into my head. She's wrong' I thought.
I have to-
"Devon, what's wrong?" Theo asked with concern in his eyes. I really wanted to tell him what was happening but I couldn't speak.
"You're blocking your mind. How are you doing that?" He asked, surprised.
I desperately wanted to scream and tell him it was not me. It was Barza.
She was doing something to me. Something I didn't understand.
"Devon... you're-"
'You don't deserve him, Devon. He deserves better. You're just a burden to him. That's what you are. He doesn't need a pathetic human like you. You can't give him what he needs'
Her words cut right through me. She was right in a way. Theo didn't need me. He was only staying with me because he had no choice. Somewhere deep down within me, I knew she was getting to me. I'm just human. I couldn't fight what was happening to me. I was a sore loser and Theo knew that. I couldn't breathe. I needed to leave. I needed an escape. I didn't deserve Theo.
"I'm sorry.... I... I have to go" I said and started to run towards the door. Theo was quick enough to grab my hand just as I stepped into the porch. "Please, don't. I really don't understand why you suddenly changed your mind. Why are you crying and why are you shutting me out?" He asked.
I stared at our entwined fingers and I suddenly felt the need to be far away from him. So, I punched him in the face with tears still running down my cheeks.
Theo stared at me, stunned.
"Oh my God... I.. I'm sorry.. I"
I just hit him.
I just hit my Theo.
'He's not mine anymore' I lamented mentally.
I needed to breathe. I needed to get away.
But then, he held my hand firmly, refusing to let go.
"J-just leave me alone.... I-I can't be around you. I-I I need air" I choked out, my knuckles throbbing painfully.
"No, I'm not letting you go until I figure out what's going on with you," he said.
I shook my head, firmly.
"No, you don't understand. I shouldn't be here. You don't mean any word you say and I've been lying to you too. I don't like you. I don't want you. I hate you. Stay away from me" I choked out.
I probably looked like a mess at that point. But I didn't care.
'He doesn't need you. You're trash' the voice inside my head continued.
"You don't mean that" Theo's eyes were sad. So sad, it became even harder to breathe.
"I mean it... I do.... I don't want to ever see you again" I said, shakily.
His eyes were burning. All I saw in them was despair, hurt and desperation.
He slowly released my hand and just as I thought I was free, his lips met mine.
No!
Don't kiss me!
No!
His fingers sank into my hair... his hands cupping my face. Oh my God.... I can't-
'I'm kissing him back.
What's wrong with me?
I want to scream...
I want to cry' I screamed mentally.
Tears were running down my cheeks. Only then was I aware of the tears on his own face.
Our tears.
Our frantic heartbeats.
His hands holding onto mine. I realized that I could breathe. I couldn't hear Barza in my head anymore.
Butterflies erupted in my stomach and I let out a sigh as we pulled away.
"I'm sorry.... I'm so sorry" I mumbled, burying my face against his chest.
Lemons...
I could perceive the scent of lemons. I love lemons.
They remind me of my Theo.
"It's okay.... It's okay" he whispered, holding me close to himself.
I closed my eyes, taking slow breaths.
In, out.
In, out.
....
Theo and I walked into the sitting room silently. Allen was lying on the couch looking dead. "Is he okay?" I asked Luke, my heart beat accelerating.
"He's fine. Your brother sleeps like the dead" he shrugged.
"So, he's fine now? I mean, he's no longer attached to a dark soul?" I asked.
"Yup. He's okay"
"Thank you, Luke" I said.
"It's no biggie. I'll just leave you two alone" he said and slipped out of the sitting room. We both went upstairs to Theo's room. So, I slipped off my boots.
"Can I use the bathroom?" I asked him and he nodded.
I nearly sprinted into the bathroom. I stared at my reflection in the mirror. I looked tired and I also looked like a raccoon. I carefully washed away my ruined makeup. I splashed cold water on my face and heaved a sigh. Few minutes later, I stepped out of the bathroom. Theo had taken off his shirt and was standing by the window, staring outside.
I couldn't help but admire his back muscles.
I slowly sat down on the bed, feeling guilty for ruining our first date. He slowly sat down beside me and blew out a long breath.
"What happened back there?" He asked, cautiously.
"Someone took my pendant at school today" I said and he stiffened.
"I heard Barza in my head in the morning. It got worse after we brought Allen to Luke. Barza was in control of my thoughts and emotions. I didn't mean those things I said" I said to him, holding his hand. He smiled at me sadly. "I'm sorry you had to go through that" he rasped.
"It's not your fault, Theo" I said. "It's not your fault, either. We can still watch a movie, don't you think?" He said and I grinned.
"A chick flick. We watch a chick flick tonight" I said and he grinned.
"Deal"
Few minutes later, I was wearing Theo's blue T-shirt and was curled up in his arms as we watched 'the perks of being a wallflower'.
I kept sneaking glances at Theo. I noticed the perfect arches of his eyebrows....the length of his dark lashes.... the moles on his neck and on the corner of his lips. He slowly traced my knuckles with his fingers and the pain disappeared. I watched him place featherlight kisses on my knuckles.
"Theo?" I said.
"Mmm?" He hummed, his eyes slipping close.
"Thanks" I whispered and his lips curled into a smile.
He'd snapped me out of my illusions; he was truly a lifesaver. And I hoped Barza would stay completely out of my head. If only I knew how wrong I was.
.....
THEO
I arrived home from patrol and was basically covered in blood and demon ichor. I really needed a shower. I was tired and I just wanted to relax after the long night I'd just had. Somewhere around twelve a.m, I'd gotten out of bed without waking Devon up. I had also carefully placed my pendant around her neck as she slept. I stepped into my bedroom and froze when I realized that Devon was gone. My pendant was lying on the night stand with a folded paper lying underneath.
I picked up the folded letter.
It read,
I'm sorry but I had to leave.
Don't come after me.
I assure you that I'm fine.
I just felt lonely and decided to go home.
x Devon
My stomach sank and the feeling of unease rested heavily on me. I took a shower and got dressed before hurrying downstairs. Luke had showered too and was standing in front of the refrigerator.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"I don't know. I just need to check up on Devon" I said.
His eyes widened.
"She left?"
"Yeah... I have to go" I said and stepped out into the pouch. With my wings stretched out, I flew into the air. The cold wind nipped at me but I ignored it. Devon...
I had to get to her.
I got to her house and stepped in through the window. Her bed was unoccupied and no one was in her room. It seemed as if she had slept on the bed for a few minutes before leaving.
With shaky hands, I opened the door of her bedroom and enhanced my vision. She wasn't there. She wasn't home. I moved out of her room. Where had she gone to? Rain started to fall as if in sync with my mood.
I had to find her.
I needed to find her
