Chapter 6 Pigs Don't Fly

DEVON
I sat on the edge of my bed staring sullenly at the wall of my room. It was really unlike me to sit down, all holed up in my room, sulking for hours. But, I just couldn't help it; especially after what had happened earlier today.
'You'll be getting married to Casper after college'
Those words sickened me.
They made me hate myself.
Why was I so unfortunate?
First, Theo comes along and my heart melts at the sight of him. Then, Kayden asks me out on a date.
Then, I'm told that I'm going to have to marry Casper?!
What next?
Was some emo guy going to confess his love for me?
I honestly didn't know what I was doing anymore.
I felt so hurt.
And right at this point, even as much as I hated to admit it, I wanted Theo there with me.
I didn't want to feel like this.
I hated the feeling of hopelessness and I felt so lonely, it hurt.
"Dev?"
That silky voice.
'Oh my God, he's here!' I thought with mixed emotions running through me.
I stood up, watching him walk towards me with his hood still over his head.
This was the person my heart yearned for. I didn't know why. I wanted to unravel him. I wanted him to be mine.
My emotions were so conflicted and it was indeed driving me nuts.
"You came," I breathed, tears filling my eyes.
I wanted to hate him.
I wanted to hate him for showing up at all.
I wanted to hate him for making me want him.
But I couldn't.
I just couldn't.
I wanted to be with him so bad, it fucking hurt!
But I felt that I couldn't be with him.
I would probably get married to Casper.
I might fall in love with Kayden.
I was scared because I didn't know what was happening to me. I thought I was losing my mind.
Strangled sobs escaped my lips and I felt him pull me close to himself, stroking my hair to comfort me. I weakly pounded my fists against his chest until I was too tired to do anything. "I'm sorry," he whispered.
Sorry?
You haven't done anything wrong. I wish you would do something bad and make me hate you.
But I don't think I am capable of ever hating you.
"Let it out," he whispered.
I squeezed my eyes shut, inhaling his sweet scent.
Pines and lemon.
He smelled so damn good.
I felt myself slowly relax in his arms, listening to his steady heartbeat.
"I'm scared," I whispered.
"You don't have to be. I'm here with you. I'll be there whenever you need me. I promise," he replied.
I smiled with my head on his chest. "Now I know how much you care about me. Thank you," I said.
"You don't have to thank me, love," he said to me.
"Stay? Stay with me tonight. At least until I fall asleep?" I said.
"If you want me to," he replied, leading me to my bed. I felt so tired, so drained. "Hold me?" I said, creating space for him on my bed. He hesitated a bit before sitting down on my bed. I watched him take off his boots. His feet were delicately pretty but strong looking with some really beautiful art designs around his ankles. They looked like tattoos but I knew they weren't, especially since they were golden. He was slowly unraveling himself to me.
"You're not worried about your parents finding me in your bed?" He asked.
"I don't care about them right now. Besides, they won't be able to see you anyway," I said
He laid down beside me and held me close to himself with my head on his chest.
I felt content and at peace.
I hoped that one day, I would get to see what was beneath his hood. Perhaps one day, I would be able to wake up to admire his facial features.
I wondered what he truly looked like and to be honest, I didn't really care about Kayden or Casper or an unknown emo guy right now. All that mattered at this point was Theo.
My Theo.
....
"Have you heard?" Karla asked when we stopped by my locker at school the next day. "It depends on what you're talking about. I've heard a lot of things," I shrugged.
I'd awoken with Theo gone. I'd found a rose lying on my bedside table, obviously from him. I'd felt happy until mum and dad had called me downstairs to scold me for the way I'd behaved during the previous day's dinner. I was really not in a good mood right now.
"There's a new guy in school," she said.
"And that has anything to do with me because?"
"He's not just going to our school, he's in senior year like us."
I raised a brow, shutting my locker.
"Rumor has it that he's hotter than hell. He's like an Adonis."
"I still don't get why it has anything to do with me," I drawled and she heaved a sigh.
"You're so exasperating sometimes."
"Well deal with it," I snapped.
"Woah, what crawled up your ass and died?" She said, taken aback.
"I'm sorry. I just--I'm in a bad mood. I'm sorry for taking it out on you," I sighed.
"It's fine, sweetie. I know you're just not a morning person. Come on let's get to class," she said.
We had both settled down in the classroom when the door opened. I gasped, my jaw nearly hitting the ground.
Holy macaroni!
Someone just walked in and that someone looks like perfection. Jet black hair resting on his head in loose curls, piercing grey eyes and well defined jawline.
Karla was definitely right.
He was HOT.
He stepped in, his lower body adorned with snug blue jeans and shiny black boots. His collarless, white long sleeved shirt hugged his upper body perfectly.
He sat down directly next to Karla who was having a hard time keeping a straight face. Her cheeks were on fire. He looked at her, a smirk playing on his lips. I could still hear the giggling and the whispers coming from the other girls. He whispered something to Karla and she giggled.
Mrs Filch, our AP statistics teacher walked in. After we'd exchanged greetings, she hummed softly, her eyes scanning the classroom.
"I see we've got an addition to this class. He's very dashing. Don't you think so ladies?" She said, smiling. The girls began to giggle. Seriously, it was getting annoying.
"Introduce yourself to us, dear," she said to the new guy. "My name is Lucian Blake but you can call me Luke. I'm 18 and I love grapes," he said.
"Sit down, Luke dear," she said. I doodled irregular shapes on my note book as Mrs Filch taught us. I had been zoning out a lot lately especially with everything that had been going on. I closed my eyes briefly, wishing that I was in Theo's arms once again. As soon as the bell went off, we all left the classroom. I was heading to the nurse's office to get something to ease my headache when I caught sight of Lucian leaning on the wall just besides the nurse's office. I blinked, my feet coming to a halt. He looked like he'd been waiting... for me? How on earth did he know where I was going to and how did he get here so quickly?
"Stop thinking too much, Devon.... You'll hurt your brain," he said, lightly tapping his foot against the ground.
"H-how the hell do you know my name?" I gasped.
"By reading the notice board, duh" he said, rolling his eyes. Well, he was definitely sarcastic alright.
"Just leave me alone. I'm not in the mood for any conversation right now," I said, pushing past him. He held my hand, stopping me from walking away.
"Don't worry. You don't need the nurse, " he said.
"W-what?"
"You heard me, princess. Come with me. I need to talk to you," he said to me and I groaned.
"What part of leave me alone don't you understand?" I said to him.
He smirked.
"The part where you said pigs have wings and can fly," he shrugged.
My eyes widened.
"Pigs don't fly. They don't have wings. I didnt...Oh- you're messing with me again, aren't you? Gosh, your'e so infuriating!" I groaned.
"Keep telling yourself that, princess."
"Stop. Calling. Me. That," I said through gritted teeth.
"Gosh, you're just as salty as Theo," he said and I froze.
No, it can't be.
He doesn't mean Theo. My Theo. He's just messing around with me.
"What did you just say?" I asked.
"I know you're not deaf, princess. I'm here on behalf of Theo," he said.
"H-how do you know him?" I asked, confused.
He looked around to see if anyone was looking, then his grey eyes turned to a pair of glowing silver eyes.
"He's my bestfriend, princess," he said and I gaped at him with amazement.
No freaking way!
...
"Wow, I really can't believe this," I muttered for the hundredth time today.
"You better start believing, princess. Theo really cares about you that's why I had to do this"
"Then, why is he still hiding himself from me? I know he cares about me and wants to protect me but why won't he let me see the real him?" I said and Luke's gaze softened.
"He's been through a lot, Devon. He doesn't want to hurt you and at the same time, he doesn't want to get hurt," he said.
"Then, what do I do? I don't know why I'm being pulled towards him. I don't know why I want him. It's so messed up. I just want to get to know the person behind the hood," I said.
Luke grinned.
"Then it's your job to make him trust you. It's your job to make him let down his walls. It's also your job to trust him and never let him down," I stared at my golden pendant.
That's it.
That's what I had to do.
I was going to get him to trust me. I hoped that I wouldn't end up breaking his heart.
"I'll see you later, princess," he said to me and left my table. Karla, Mel and Nichole walked up to me with wide grins on their excited faces.
"You were just having a conversation with Luke. How did that happen?!" Mel squealed.
"It's not a big deal," I said, rolling my eyes.
"It is a BIG deal, Devon!" Nichole and Karla exclaimed.
"Well, it's not a big deal to me. You girls can go ahead and stick your head into a bowl of rotten tomatoes if you don't like it," I said and they all gasped.
"Devon!"
"What? You have a choice. Everyone has a choice. Choose wisely," I said.
Mel and Nichole shook their heads, amused. After they'd left, Karla sat down.
"Dev," she said, narrowing her eyes.
"What is it?"
"Why is Kayden staring at you like that?" She said and I turned around to see what she was talking about.
He was staring at me, alright? He was staring at me like a love sick pup!
'What the hell?!' I thought, feeling uneasy.
"Dev, honey. What did you do?" Karla said, still narrowing her eyes.
"I- mayhaveacceptedtogo outonadatewithKayden," I breathed.
"Stop talking to me like you've got a carrot shoved down your throat!" Karla said, looking very displeased.
Uh-oh.
"I may have agreed to go out on a date with Kayden tonight," I said, grimacing sheepishly.
"What?!" Karla screamed.
Everyone turned to look at her like she'd gone mad.
"What. The. Hell. Were. You. Thinking. You. Dumb. Girl" she said through gritted teeth.
"I didn't want him to feel bad?" I said.
"You just raised his hopes up. Congratulations, sweetie. You've managed to get yourself a husband," Karla said and I blanched.
"What? No, it's just a date. That's all"
"No, honey. It always starts from a date."
