Chapter 9 Liar, Liar, Pants On Fire

DEVON
"Dev, honey. I'm so sorry about everything that has happened these past few days" My mum said to me as I had breakfast on Saturday morning. I stared at her, still shoving my pancakes into my mouth.
"Why aren't you saying anything?" She said, letting out an exasperated sigh.
She'd been making a very long speech concerning Casper and I. I hadn't uttered a word and she was not happy about that.
"Devon, why won't you say anything?"
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe, it's because I have pancakes shoved half-way down my throat" I said, giving her a pointed look.
"I know you're not happy with everything that has been going on. It's your father's decision, not mine. I want you to get married to the one you love, someday. But your dad decided it was necessary to take precautionary measures" she said.
"What are you talking about, mum?" I asked, frowning.
"I'm not supposed to tell you..." She said, pinching the bridge of her nose.
"Mum..." I said, pouting at her. "Fine, I'll tell you. Let's go to your room" she sighed, and I abandoned my food. We went upstairs and I sat down on the bed. She opened the window and took a deep breath. My mum, Brielle Bradley was still a beauty to behold. Her long dark hair fell in waves past her shoulders. Her blue eyes which I'd inherited, shone brightly.
"Devon.... right before you were born, something happened" My mum told me.
I stared at her, my heart thudding madly. I felt like what my mum was about to say would change a lot of things. Little did I know how right I was.
****Flashback****
Brielle climbed the stairs unsteadily with her protruding stomach, slowing her down. She rubbed her eyes tiredly and opened the door to her second son's room. Melvin was ill with a very high fever and she was worried. He rarely fell ill, seeing him so ill was unnerving. There was a heavy thunder storm going on outside and her husband wasn't home.
"Mommy?" Six years old Melvin said, shivering feverishly.
"Yes, sweetheart" Brielle said, dabbing his forehead with a damp towel.
"I'm scared" he whimpered and her heart broke.
"You don't have to be scared, Mel. I've got you"
Melvin nodded and closed his eyes. The door opened and Allen, Melvin's elder brother walked in.
He walked up to his mother.
"I hate the sound of the thunder, mum. Can I stay here tonight?" He said, his face pale.
Brielle smiled and ruffled his hair. She immediately made up a makeshift bed in Melvin's room. She winced when she felt a contraction. She was starting to get worried because she couldn't risk going into labor at this time. Melvin was still very ill and her husband wasn't home yet. Besides, there was a thunderstorm brewing outside.
Suddenly, Melvin stiffened, his eyes rolling into the back of his head. Brielle panicked.
He was so stiff, she feared that he was having a convulsion.
But then, he began to speak in monotone..... like he was in some sort of trance.
"She's beautiful..... full of love and light. Danger lurks in her future. She's fated to be his other half. They are destined to fight for their happiness. All the same, if she finds him, her life will be thrown into chaos. It's up to her to weave her way through. She's the game changer"
Allen was whitefaced as he stared at his brother.
Brielle couldn't believe what she'd just heard.
That was when the Braxton Hicks contractions hit her.
The storm outside had worsened. With tears pricking her eyes, she sank to the ground.
Melvin had snapped out of his trance and was looking like he hadn't been ill.
Brielle could feel the baby coming. "Allen- grab the blankets" she gasped.
Allen snapped out of his daze and raced to his mother's bedroom.
He grabbed the blankets and hurried back to his brother's room. Melvin had grabbed a bowl of water and a towel just like his mother had asked. "Mommy? Should we call Dad?" Melvin asked.
"He can't come...not in this storm"
Right there and then, Brielle went into labor. The more she screamed and perspired, the more terrified her sons where. Finally the cry of a baby was heard. Brielle gasped, feeling very light headed. She couldn't believe what had just happened. Just as soon as she separated the baby from herself, she burst into tears.
"It's a girl" she found herself whispering. Melvin and Allen came closer with wide grins on their faces.
"She's so small" Allen said, grinning.
"Here" Brielle said, placing her child in Melvin's arms. He cooed softly, blue eyes holding admiration for his little sister.
"What will you like to name her?" Brielle said, resting her head on the wall.
"Devon" Allen and Melvin said, grinning at each other.
Far away in the kingdom of the fairies, prince Theo sat up and got out of bed. His small feet took him to the side of his window. He pushed them open and gazed at the indigo colored sky with several stars twinkling.
'Devon'
The voices came to him like a whisper. He grinned, staring at the sky.
His mate.
He would find her one day, he promised himself.
*****End of flashback*****
"You mean you gave birth to me in Melvin's room?" I gasped, eyes wide.
"Yes"
"How did you manage that?" I asked.
"I was a midwife at that time, Dev"
"So you knew" I said.
"I knew. I went to a seer... she told me the same thing. Your father was worried. He couldn't stand the fact that you were owned by someone else. Moreso, a non-human at that. He thinks by getting you to marry Casper, your soulmate won't have a chance "
I stared at her, shocked.
"If only you knew what has actually been going on" I said, shaking my head.
"Let me guess, he found you" she uttered.
"Mum, we're soulmates. You can't change our fates"
"I'm just worried, sweetie. I'm just so worried that all this is too much for you"
"I don't care. As long as I get to be with him, I'll be fine"
My mum heaved a sigh.
"I hope you're ready for the chaos that is to come"
I turned away from her, staring at the half-finished drawing of Theo on my desk.
My mum stood up and walked towards the door.
"Your brothers are coming home today" she said and my eyes widened. Oh well, brothers. They're so precious but you know---you know how they get. Overprotective and all.
***************
"I'm no longer dating Chris" Karla said to me as we had a video chat later that afternoon. I stared at her, stunned.
I wanted to believe that she was lying.
Her relationship with Christopher Bernard was a beautiful one. I would honestly say they were meant for each other.
"You expect me to believe you? Ha! Liar, liar, pants on fire!" I said and she laughed.
"I'm serious, Dev. It's over between the two of us" she said, smiling.
She didn't look like she'd just had a break up. Infact, she was wearing a nicely done make-up and a fancy dress.
Is it possible for someone to look that happy even after a major break up?
"What happened? I thought you guys were in love with each other" I said.
"I broke up with him" she said. "Wait, what?"
"You heard me. I don't understand. What did he do?" I asked.
"He missed our date and he lied to me about his mum being admitted at the hospital. He told me he had to be there for her. I could tell he was lying" she said.
I stared at her, confused.
There was something off about her. She looked too...
dandy....it was weird.
"Are you sure you're okay?" I asked, carefully.
She shrugged.
"I'm ecstatic"
Woah
"I'm sick of him anyways. It's his loss. And, Oh- did I forget to tell you that I met another guy? His name's Brandon. He's gorgeous. I'm going out on a date with him tonight" she said.
"Karla, when exactly did you break up with Chris?" I asked.
"Yesterday, why?"
"When did you meet Brandon"
"This morning when I went out for a jog" she said.
"Oh, right. You moved on quickly" I said.
"As they say, life goes on. See ya later!"
The screen went blank.
What the hell?!
....
"Well that's weird. Is she usually that airy?" Theo asked.
"Sometimes, but... it's weird" I said. Lucian chuckled.
"Normality is overrated" he said, pouring himself a glass of water. I'd slipped out of the house again to see Theo. It was really difficult to stay away from him. Don't blame me.
We were in their sitting room and I was braiding Theo's long hair while I told them about Karla's weird behavior.
"Maybe she was actually tired of him, who knows? We boys suck sometimes" Lucian said, plopping down on the couch.
"Well, we can't be too sure. Someone opened a rift, allowing several demons to walk the surface of the earth. There has been a lot of summoning of demons and a lot of dark energy" Theo said, bringing his smoothie to his lips.
"Do you think she's under a demonic influence?" I asked, worried.
"It can be. But, the only way to confirm it is to dig deeper" Luke said, reaching out to touch Theo's hair.
I swatted his hand away and he pouted. "You've got some nice braiding skills, princess. I'm sure you wouldn't mind braiding my hair too" he said. "You'll have to pay five dollars for that" I said and he gasped.
"What? But- Theo didn't pay a dime! It's not fair!"
Theo laughed, closing his eyes. "Oh, I know. You'll massage my feet instead right?" Luke said.
"Nope, not happening"
"Oh, come on!" Luke groaned and we laughed.
"My brothers are coming home today" I said.
"Wait. You have brothers?" Luke and Theo echoed.
"Yup and they're very overprotective" I said and Lucian smirked.
"I'll like to meet them" he said. "They won't be able to see us" Theo said.
"I don't think so. Actually, they might be able to see you guys" I said.
"That's very interesting" Luke said, stroking his chin.
"You're so infuriating, Luke" Theo muttered, glaring at Luke who'd just grabbed Theo's smoothie and was confidently emptying the cup while he wiggled his brows. "What? Come and get your smoothie, big bad tiger" Lucian said, smirking at Theo who was glaring daggers at him. I giggled as they watched them. They were bestfriend goals.
