Chapter 22

His name had been put to the mud. Many news reporters were paid to put him on the bad list, some were threatened by their management to be sacked if they present a good report about him. Again and again, time and times, his name was going dim. It would really take him time to wash himself clean again.
In this part of the world, political columnists and journalists savors stories than any other. The national newspapers contained greater percentage of political reports and interviews. Then the headlines still contained the day to day reports events of politics at the house of senate. Then few lines contained sports for sport lovers, education, bank advertisement on stock, law column, one page or two for arts and review on music and applied arts.
As for the issue of Zack, they got all to write on for at least one or two weeks. From his policy on education which failed and his defense for law and…they could just write and write to bring him in for the public everyday.
The following year crawled slowly and ended. Everyone waited for it. There were high expectations in the air as to the new faces of politics. The last administration was complimented as a dispensation marked by multiple infamies, inconsistency of budget implementation, plans and drudgery of revenue allocation to hard to earth states. Mr. President had been a whole big disappointment, acquiring wealth in shares and bond and sold little fantasy to the entire nation and sold almost all second-handed cars (to acquire new ones) to a hand full of his boys with binding agreement that his purse must be filled in return.
Mr. Ribadau at the death of his strident opponent Mr. Zack suddenly became a party stooge. His popularity afterward seemed driven by the incumbent president animus. He paid his loyalty to him to fill his pocket and command the respect of his juniors in the president’s list. It was popular in the belief of everyone that his political credo was really a poor, unraveled one.
Mr. President could only disqualify him secretly in the party fold when he raised a questionable finger to his policy and questioned the immunity of his aides. That was his first mistake, the first ever since his romance with the thing god. Luck had failed him completely as he had shifted to choose the option of either to vie for the office of the vice president or nothing.
It was no good news anyway. In a single night, all plans were changed. Surprisingly, no one questioned further. His lordship Mr. President had used his appellant right to choose and disqualify who seemed good to be disqualified. To many, it was easy for them to accept any condition from Mr. President, hoping that finally, it could make him go.
Mr. Zack was no more. Aside death, he was no joker and cannot be joked with. He would have excavated a hole in the heart of the nation’s politics, by summing up all courage to vie for the seat of the president. To bring about change and new face as he had championed for politics in Africa. He was no sheer coward and confessed it sheer irresponsibleness to inflict impunity on the nation. He had planned it hard before he came into politics not to play hide and seek game with the deplorable hearts in the nation’s political jungle. Mr. President at the intoxicating height of power found him insurmountable and destructible and therefore used an expert means to drive him off. That would have been the case if it were always. Soon after these he joined the fresh assassins. There was everyday development in the party fold and how things were carried out in the administration of Mr. President.
In the continuity agenda of Mr. president, he was the person who fought it to the end. Sometimes in a mild way, sometimes it ended with fight over words. He followed all rule of law which to him were in favor of him and the entire people of the nation.
“I said what happens in this party and outside it. I say what happens to this nation and I believe it must be followed”.
“ I can appreciate some points you are making, but it seems to me that there is some sentiment in your tone and if these remarks which in nature are inflammatory, and when trusted before the public, a revolutionary act will be fostered throughout the country”
“I would always maintain that you are a security threat. This soon must stop”.
“ As much as I know His Excellency, Mr. Zack is right. I cannot say you are entirely right. You have managed the affairs of this nation continuously for two decades less two and it is time we seek for changes into many thing” threw in by another man.
