Chapter 93

‘ Wild display of torture and possible extermination in public places, playing jungle justice and laughing over it. That was the kind of campaign people engage in, twenty-five years ago or more when the dream of the system of government in practice had not been known nor explained. We need capable hands and minds now more than ever before to help translate this thought and intensions of ours into a plausible reality. Organizing decent elections presents huge logistic problems, but we promise to make an impact. At the same time, I do not believe in using blood to bring about peace, even now democracy is in ripe age, being the best system of government which many advance countries of the world do not practice should be a good reason to keep us off from anything that would taint our image. We want to be consistence with our determination to build a united, harmonious, stable, and prosperous nation. Pledge to be faithful and committed to people and to my assignment, as part of my nationwide effort to weed out charlatans from the political field. We will make a push for electoral reform and bring about new concept that fits the millennium goal of the electoral process of any nation of the world. We know that many hearts are still aggrieved over the previous elections that brought many here into power, but we must try as much as possible to apply some civility to accommodate the failings of others and for more, sink our differences in order to save this collapsing democracy and to be a historical link to upcoming generations who may reap from our labor. Thank you, Mr. President and the people of this great republic,”. He submitted.
It was followed by another round of applause and cheers from the teeming crowd. He spoke heavily accented English. His English was faultless, delivered clearly in an impeccable manner – suggesting a decent university degree. In a statement he summarized, he gave a fair summary of the many party’s fortunes over the eighteen years after the exchange of baton from old to the new government in election tribunals and reshuffling of political office holders who lost the loyalty of their mentors. He also gave an apt reflection of the visible transformation the parties need both new and old. To the ruling party, he stressed to the dismay and surprise of many that it has gone from a pious and well-organized ruling party to a basket case where members were torn apart along mundane lines and for other parties who are fixing themselves for recognition. An idea disapproved by state men and stigmatized by any party holders. It was indeed a long speech that nearly took all the hours allotted for the gathering.
He was still a boy, and his great learning was pushing him to say what he ought not to. It was all a repetition of what has been said and so the only difference was his grammar.
The moderator stood and roamed around the available space in the hall, waiting for the clapping to go down. For a perceptible moment it did die down.
“Congratulations young professor Uka on your appointment. Undoubtedly our political culture and arena is continuously nourished by new gladiators and super brain like Uka. His Excellency is very intelligent, articulate and fast to spot such a genius out. The fact that he came down here after his studies in Gods own countries of America and Britain shows he has our interest at heart. With our little encounter with you left us with no doubt that, you can defend your chains of degrees any day, anywhere, anytime. This is also clear evidence that this republic had produced a man of high repute and genuity. It is clearly doubtless, that there are countless, clean and trustworthy leaders like Professor Uka in every facet of our national life that are rearing to give quality and untainted leadership to this giant in the sun. They are there in their scores of numbers grossly underutilized with their boundless energy and intimidating record of outstanding performance. We are in for a new dispensation. The government and the entire people are pressing for immediate implementation of the changes, and we need you well. From now on, you are winged to the frontline of the nation’s strategic seat successfully. Today surely offers a moment for some introspection of excellent opportunities willfully squandered. We feel honored that he too would honor the agreement and options from his Excellency, which is anyway usual to our system of government. Gentlemen and ladies, we would want to listen to our Mr. Host, His Excellency. Give him your attention.” He said and dangled out of the stage with a round of applause.
