Chapter 94

On his appointment, there were high expectations, politically, socially and geographically. There were lists of issues requiring attention. They were endless , ranging from agitations from regions for self-government which had been a thorn in the flesh to all the leaders in the nation , to minor, seeking attention and diversions of wealth to only one region that do not have anything to show for. While others cry out for poor allocation formula, others were agitating for new states and others equal power sharing at the center.
The infrastructure decay from some regions and holding of baton of power by a particular zone for years on end were issues on the marble with slim hope of turning it down. However, everything as generally believed revolved around the need for a free and fair election, which the country had failed to achieve totally since its inceptions as a democratic state.
Just like many others on the lead role, Mr. President had done nothing in his whole eighteen years as the president to improve the living conditions of the masses. The unspeakable misery of the roads that deteriorated from potholes to death traps, epileptic power supply, inflation and steady increase in the prize of commodities and petroleum product and high- rise in unemployment made people cry and clamor. The masses had groaned under the yoke of oppression from the leaders impose on them that no one seemed to answer. Worst still, they had grown thick skin to absorb it all when they knew that nothing would be done to reverse it.
Mr. President was doing his worst. He knew he had not been appreciated for anything good. It was widely known that he had headed a prodigal administration for nearly two decades with no intention of removing corruption. He was a no story, a cheap skate that cash starved the economy, public services and people generally.  His cabinets were more of bad eggs, files by night and parliamentary pugilists whose sole aim were to suck the country dry,  a government with punitive taxation and polices - ramshackled policies that had kept the future of the country at a height falling standard. A government that had been accused of keeping the light of corruption burning and hiding in pretence.
His policy had earned him accusation of sadism, which was fitting in his treatment of some regions. This system of government, which was in hiding under the dark side of democracy, was totally absurd and foreign to the nature of older politicians who clung to the outmoded shibboleth of the countries political doctrine. With their old voice, they cry for a change of heart. They seek the attention of the media to speak their mind, they write protest letter and attends gatherings to say their mind, but no one listened to them.
The gathering saw the attendance of the ruling party and many potential crossovers from minor parties who must compulsorily serve their years for pageboys to Mr. President before their problems would be looked into. They were given time and chance to say their mind on Uka’s appointment, an issue they briefly touched and went straight to their personal problems. Men who had been largely responsible for the increased infrastructure decay and under development, who had squandered allocation meant for larger firms, ministries, states and bodies. They weaved words to cover up the wealth stashed away from the purse, busied themselves making blanket comments to cover up holes. They spoke from many ministries they held with great failures; they spoke but did not break down the expenditure, eyeing their partners in crime to know the right time to hand over the microphone. Men who had worsened the economic conditions and squandered money meant for the construction of road and provisions of basic amenities. For just few years after handing the mantle of leadership, they had looted the public treasures and wrote off their names from bankruptcy forever. Men with out conscience.
While few of them could not make it up for the best cars and exhaust blowing motorcycles because of their short stay in the compulsory service of Mr. President, they preferred to shuttle between the federal house to their different homes, making savings for the sponsoring of their children and relatives for education and medical trip abroad.
For many others, it was no happy moment for them, who despite their loyalty to the ruling party, Mr. President and others like Mr. Ribadau did not smell the seat. Those times were not the best time for them. Silently they were licking their wounds for having been left out in the cold despite firm promises of either the post of special adviser to most important and financial matters or juicy ministerial portfolios. In this part of the world, it was a culture.
