Chapter 38: The Interview

Stephanie’s phone made a beep which made her open her eyes. She threw her hands on her drawer and picked up her phone. Her sleepy eyes closed and opened before she took a look at her phone’s screen. When she finally opened her eyes to check the message that had popped in, her eyes widened in great shock, and she sprang up. It was a message from the company she had submitted her credentials to.
“I have an interview in an hour?!” She roared and jumped out of bed. Her heart was thumping violently against her chest. She was very surprised and was still in shock as she rushed to the bathroom. As she was in the bathroom, her door flung up, and Sarah entered. “Stephanie, are you okay? I heard your screen,” Sarah uttered fearfully as her eyes scanned Stephanie’s room. When she didn’t see her in the room, she moved to her bathroom door and placed her ear on it.
“Stephanie, are you in there?!” She asked in a louder voice, and Stephanie heard her. “Mom, Mom is that you?!” Stephanie asked from inside the bathroom. “Yes, Of course it is me! I heard you screaming. What’s wrong?!” Sarah asked, still pressing her ear against her door so she could hear clearly. “Can you help me pick an outfit? I have an interview in less than an hour! I just got the message now!” Stephanie yelled and switched on her shower.
Sarah didn’t bother to talk anymore because she knew Stephanie wouldn’t hear her when the shower was working. So, she headed to her closet and started looking for the perfect interview outfit. “She is yet to go out to search for a job. How does she have an interview to attend now?” Sarah mumbled as she started throwing Stephanie’s clothes on the bed. She wanted the perfect shirt and pants for her, and in no time, she found one. It was a yellow t-shirt and blue office pants.
She raised the outfit and saw it was rough and nodded ironing, so she took them in her hand and walked to the bathroom door again. “I found an outfit, Stephanie! But it needs ironing. I’m heading out now to help you, okay?” She asked, and Stephanie responded with a moan. She had soap on her face so she couldn’t speak.
After a few minutes, Stephanie walked out of the bathroom tied in a towel that stopped right above her knees. Her hair was dripping wet, and she had another towel in her hand to dry it up. “Mom! Is that ready?” She asked, walking out of the room, rubbing her damp hair with the towel in her hand. She got to the living room and saw her mother ironing her blue office pants. “Thank you so much, mother. I am in a rush.” She rushed to where she placed the t-shirt and picked it up.
“This interview you are talking about. When did you submit your credentials? And to which company?” “The company is Hai Clothings Companies. My friend, Robbie, told me about the company, and I applied for the job online. I didn’t put all my hopes on it and that is why I forgot to tell you, mom.” Stephanie picked up her office pants when her mother was done and headed to the room. “Hai Clothings? That name sounds familiar,” Sarah responded. “Yes, mom! It’s a company in Los Angeles, it should be familiar,” Stephanie answered, and shut her door behind her.

“Taxi! Taxi!” Stephanie waved down a taxi that was approaching where she stood. The taxi slowed down and stopped in front of her. “Where are you going, ma’am?” The driver asked after winding his window down. “Hai Clothing Companies. You know where the company is right?” Stephanie asked, and the driver bounced his head. “Who wouldn’t know that company? It is one of the biggest in Los Angeles,” The driver responded, and Stephanie smiled proudly. “Yes, that is where I’m going.” She opened the door and stepped into the car.
The driver pulled up in front of a huge company after some minutes. Stephanie marveled at the company from inside the car where she sat. “Truly, it is one of the biggest,” She mumbled, and the driver turned to look at her. “We are here, Ma’am,” He said, and Stephanie bounced her head. “Thank you.” She dipped her hand inside her bag and pulled out some money. She gave it to the driver and stepped out of the car.
She stood in front of the gigantic building and looked up to its roof which she could barely see. ‘Gosh, so much money!’ She thought. She hung her bag on her shoulder and walked majestically into the company. There were people around, dressed in corporate clothes. She wore the same thing, so she didn’t feel too left out. She approached a lady that sat behind a desk, she seemed busy on her computer. “Hi, Good Morning,” Stephanie greeted with a huge smile. “Hi, good morning,” The lady responded, smiling too. “I’m Stephanie Taylor, I am here for an interview. I was asked to come this morning,” Stephanie told her and pulled out her phone to show her the message she received.
“Hold on, please,” The woman said and picked up the telephone. She pressed the buttons on it and placed it on her ear. “Good morning, Sir. Stephanie Taylor is here for an interview. Should I send her in?” She asked and afterward, she put down the phone. “Use the elevator, the nineteenth floor. The first office you see. That is the office of the CEO,” She said to Stephanie, and Stephanie nodded. “Thank you,” She responded and started walking to the elevator that was in front of her.
She got to the elevator and pressed the button. She waited for it to open and eventually it opened. Some people walked out of the elevator, and she gave a slight nod before walking in. She waited for the door to close and then she pressed on the button which had nineteen on it. She heaved a loud sigh and shut her eyes. She was beginning to feel nervous. “Don’t be nervous, Stephanie. This isn’t the first interview you are attending. You will do just great,” She said to herself.
Soon, the elevator opened, and she stepped out. There was an office directly in front of the elevator, and she guessed it was the CEO’s office. Written in it was “The Office Of The CEO.” Stephanie’s heart started to beat very fast as she stood in front of the door. She breathed out deeply and knocked on the shining, wooden door. “Come in,” She heard a man answer from inside the office.
She held the door knob and turned it. She opened the door slowly and looked into the office. The office looked extremely neat and arranged, the air conditioner in the office worked so well that she could feel it on her face from the door where she stood. Behind the desk was a man seated on the official chair. His face was turned to the other side, and Stephanie could only see the back of his head. “Good morning, sir,” She said, slowly walking into the office.
She got to where his desk was and then she perceived a familiar aroma. She furrowed her brows and looked closely at the man behind the desk. She could remember that aroma. Suddenly, the man turned his chair and looked at Stephanie. Immediately Stephanie saw who was seated, her bag dropped from her shoulder in awe.
“Hi, Stephanie.”
