Chapter 24 Helping A Friend

“REALLY? You two are going to help me?” Scott asked for a hundred times, still unbelievable to the fact that Nathan and I decided to help him get Becca.
“Yeah. Natalia told me about you asking for her help. You know, I was pretty much disappointed when you didn’t ask me first. Though after a few days, I just realized why not me... It’s because of Becca, isn’t it?” Nathan lengthy asked.
“Uhm... Yeah. You know, Becca likes you so much... And I don’t know how you feel about her so I chose to tell Natalia instead...”
“Sorry, Scott. I’m sorry if I told Nathan about it. I just... I couldn’t keep it to myself anymore...” I apologized.
“It’s alright. Now I got more hands than I needed. Thank you, Natalia. And thank you, Nathan.”
“You’re always welcome...”
Nathan smiled at him, before tapping his shoulder. I was about to say something when the three of us heard a familiar voice, causing us to stop and shut our mouths up.
“Hey! What’s up, guys?” Becca asked, walking towards our direction.
“We are fine. We were just talking about some stuffs like... You know, it’s not important at all,” Nathan stated.
“Yeah...” Scott seconded.
“Things like what?” Becca nagged them, before sitting beside Nathan.
The four of us are sitting peacefully at one rectangular table, Nathan and Becca sitting beside each other while Scott and I sat on the opposite side of the table. After a few minutes, we remained quiet, before I look at Becca’s direction.
She is staring at my bestfriend at the moment, before Scott nudged me a little bit. I looked up to Nathan, trying to signal him about what’s Scott been telling me about. He nodded, before standing up.
“Scott, I feel uncomfortable here on my seat. Would you mind changing our seats?”
“S-Sure...” Scott stated, blushing.
I wanted to laughed at his cute reaction. He walk towards Becca, who’s now rolling her eyes towards my direction. Scott is currently scratching his nape, out of embarrassment, I guess. Though as he sat down, I saw how glad he is having Becca by his side.
“Much better...” Nathan stated, sighing.
Becca keep glaring at me, so I was left with no choice but to walked away from that place. I mean, to get some food for myself. I haven’t eaten nor ordered my food yet for I’m still waiting for Becca to come in here, at our school Cafeteria. This is for our squad to have a complete members during lunch. I’m not as insensitive as Nathan not to wait for someone, you know.
“Excuse me, I’ll just go and grab some food,” I excused myself.
“Sure,” Scott answered.
“Want me to come with you?” Nathan asked, only making Becca’s glares to intensify at me.
“No. I’m fine, Nat. Thanks for the offer,” I refused.
“Sure. Anytime.”
As I stood up, I heard Becca’s voice, only making me close my eyes shut out of frustration. I knew it, she’ll follow me to confront or something.
“Excuse me, guys. I’m just gonna go and grab some food for me too,” she stated.
“Oh. Want me to–” Scott statement was cut short by another one of Becca’s lame statement.
“Nathan, would you like to help me?” she asked, fluttering her eyelashes.
I could see it because I was secretly observing their actions.
“Nat was there. She could help you.”
“Oh,” was her short reply.
Then I heard her footsteps towards me. I started to walked away again, pretending that I’ve heard nothing about their previous conversation.
“Natalia, wait!” she called out.
“Yep?” I turned around, facing her.
“Would you wait for me?”
“Yeah, sure.”
I waited for her, and as she step up into my pace, we continued to walk towards the counter of the Cafeteria to buy some foods. While waiting in the line, Becca suddenly cleared her throat, before saying another word.
“Natalia,” she blankly stated.
“Yeah?”
“Nathan... Haven’t you notice something about him lately? I mean... Is he liking someone except me?”
I wanted to laughed, and say it in front of her face that my bestfriend already like someone else... Someone who’s not her. And if she finds out about this, she’ll probably be as devastated as Scott is right now. But I don’t want to be rude. That was written in the rule number twenty-two of my manual... Don’t be rude to anyone.
But I couldn’t tell her a lie either. Scott, Nathan, and I have already talked about this. We shouldn’t give any false signs to Becca to make her think that Nathan has some feelings for her too.
It was so confusing, whether I should tell her the truth or not. So I just chose to pretend that I didn’t know anything about it... Or anything about Nathan’s love life to be specific.
“I don’t know. He isn’t telling me anything about it either.”
“Good then. How about you, Natalia? Are you liking someone right now?” she asked meaningfully.
“Me?”
I stopped and think about her question for a moment. Me? Liking someone? Well I guess not. It’s not sure yet, though. And also, I shouldn’t tell about that to anyone specially to Becca.
“Nope. I don’t have someone I’m interested to right now... Besides, we are only fifteen, Becca. We don’t need to find that thing right now. It’s too early for our age.”
“For your age, you mean. Not me. I’m looking much matured than my age, Natalia. And what Becca wants, Becca gets. And you know the only thing that I’ve been wanting ever since before right?” she raised one of her brows.
“What?” I asked, trying to act innocent.
“It’s not a what, Natalia. It’s a who. It’s your bestfriend, Nathan.”
She then walked away, without saying another word. She didn’t even get anything for her lunch. She just left, and I stood there alone, dumbfounded.
The whole afternoon, I’ve been thinking a lot about Becca’s words. I mean, how can she say those thing in front of my face? Right after I helped her get close to Nathan? I badly wanted to know what happened the whole summer. She changed a lot, and what I mean by that is literally, a lot. From her physical appearance up to her attitude.
“Hey... Nat! Come on! I already set up a date for Scott and Becca,” Nathan told me.
I only came back to my senses as I heard his voice, and this time, I was fully alert of what is happening to the world. Nathan and I helped Scott set up a date for him and Becca right after our classes. And the two of us make sure that it will look like an accident that the two of them are going to have a date or something.
The false plan is the four of us are supposed to gather in the coffee shop nearby our school, which is the Jackson High. Nathan and I will pretend that we couldn’t make it for some of our made up reasons, but the truth is, we are going to watch how Scott make a move to Becca.
“Come on! Scott texted me that Becca is already in there and I could read from his text that’s he’s being nervous right now!” Nathan exclaimed.
“We should hurry then. I’ll text Scott that I couldn’t make it. You should text Becca too.”
“Sure.”
We walked towards the nearby coffee shop in our school right after texting the both of them that we couldn’t make it. After a few minutes, we reached our destination where our friends are sitting peacefully, looking down at their phones.
Nathan shook his head, thinking how Scott is wasting his chance to talk and get to know more about Becca Valle. While Becca on the other hand, is just staring down at her phone and looking as disappointed as ever.
“What is he doing? He’s blowing it!” Nathan complained.
“Shhh! Quiet, Nathan. Come on, just gave him some time. You know he’s nervous,” I stated.
After a few seconds, Becca stood up, making both of Nathan and I to be stunned and to gasped in shock. Out of panic, we hid under the bush, where Becca and Scott couldn’t see us.
“Bye, Scott. I’m just gonna go and do my homework instead...”
We heard Becca’s voice from the distant. Nathan run his hands on his face, before frowning. I was about to say something when Becca walked towards our direction, making the both of us scoot closer to each other just to hide our faces.
As we move closer to each other, I turned my gaze to Nathan who did the same exact thing at the moment. We almost kiss, but thankfully, the tip of our nose were just the ones to touch at the moment.
We didn’t move, for we are afraid to be seen by Becca. After a few minutes when she left, we both exhaled, before looking away from each other. I guess helping a friend is not as easy as we think. Because the first time we tried it, it became an epic fail.
