Chapter 26 The Confrontation

“WHOAH. You missed me that bad huh?”
“No, I’m worried...” I stated, my statement coming out muffled because I’m currently burying myself in his chest.
“Hey...” He gently caressed my hair before I felt him planting a kiss in my forehead... Wait, what? He kissed me?
I looked up, seeing his face. He looked like he’s still in pain but he’s just trying to suppress or hide it from me.
“Are you sure you’re okay? You look so terrible...” I stated without any brakes, making him laughed.
“I’m fine. The nurse told me that they already called an ambulance for me.”
“What?! They are going to bring you to the hospital?!” I asked in shocked, before my tears started to stream down on my cheeks.
Poor Nathan. I feel bad and sorry for him. I mean, I pity him for having to go through that traumatic place. I hate it. Every time that the nurses are giving me some shots, I’ll feel dizzy and will probably passed out. I hope Nathan is braver than me when it comes to those things. I don’t want him to suffer in that place. I swear Tyler will pay for doing this to my bestfriend.
“Hey, don’t cry...” He pulled me once again on his chest, embracing my trembling shoulders out of crying. “I’ll be fine, Nat. You don’t have to worry about me. The nurse suspected that this is just a sprain. They just wanted to make sure so they’re bringing me to the hospital later...” he explained.
“But what if it’s not just a sprain? I mean, you know I can’t go to the hospital... I wouldn’t be able to visit you soon...”
He just chuckled at my response.
“You’re always making me laugh, Nat. I wouldn’t be confine. The doctors are just going to check me up. And hey, I’m the one who supposed to be crying right now.”
“I’m sorry... I just... I can’t help not to be worried about you. I don’t want to spend another week in here without you.”
“I know, I know. You wouldn’t be. I promise.”
I smiled, before giving him an embraced once more. Before I could make another move, we both heard a high pitched voice coming over to our direction.
“Nathan?! Where are you?!”
It was Becca, looking worried as she barged in the infirmary. The worried in her eyes suddenly subsides as soon as she saw Nathan and my position. She glared at me, her brows furrowed in anger and disbelief.
“Becca...” I stated, surprised.
She shook her head, as tears started to form at the corners of her eyes. I wanted to explained to her that nothing is wrong about what she saw, but I couldn’t do it anymore for she already ran away, looking at us like we are traitors and we both just betrayed her.
“Becca, wait!” I shouted after her. She didn’t look back.
“Just let her be alone for a moment,” Nathan stated.
I looked back to him, before nodding. I still wanted to asked him what is he feeling right now but the paramedics already arrived to take him away from me and bring him to the hospital. I wanted to follow them but I know that I couldn’t. I’m too traumatized by that place so I was left with no choice but to stay at school and wait for some updates about what happened to my bestfriend.
I took a deep breath, before I decided to came back to court to see Scott. I don’t know but I got a feeling that Tyler will do something again to him and to any other members of their team. I was walking down the hallway towards the gymnasium when I saw them, probably the game has already came into an end.
“Natalia! Is Nathan alright?” Scott asked, approaching me.
“Yeah... But they need to bring him to the hospital just to make,” I answered, trying to look as calm as I can.
His teammates are looking so worried, followed by the cheer leading squad who’s now listening like all they wanted to do was to suck up all the rumours they could get from my story. And then, there comes Tyler and his team, smirking at our direction.
My blood instantly boiled out of anger and frustration. I saw it! I saw how he did it! He did it on purpose! Maybe I could still forgive him for hitting me with a ball purposely on the face but Nathan... I wouldn’t forgive him if something bad happened to my bestfriend even if it was just an accident. How can he smirk like that? Doesn’t he have any conscience at all?
“You!” I attacked him, pushing him as hard as I could.
The crowd gasped in shock, and even Tyler is now looking so surprised because of my action.
“You did this! I saw you, Tyler! You did this to Nathan!” I shouted.
I ignored everyone, not minding their whispers or even if they started to spread a rumour about me. Scott held my hand to make me calm down, but I couldn’t for one main reason. This guy is looking like he’s not even guilty for what happened to Nathan.
“Calm down, Ms. Carter. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You don’t freaking know?! You did this to Nathan! I saw you!”
“No I didn’t,” he denied.
“Yes you did!” I pushed his shoulder, and again, the crowd gasped.
“Fine, then. Believe what you want to believe. I don’t care anymore. Besides, you can’t even do anything about it. And your nerd bestfriend probably deserves it as well.”
He turned around, as if leaving. Before he could walk away, I pulled his arms before punching him right in the face.
“Oh, my! Did she just... Like... She punched him in like... In his face?” Elyzz stated, shocked.
I felt my fist hurt so much as Scott pulled me away from his cousin, his face was full of worried. When I looked up to Tyler, I saw the corners of his lips bleeding. He wiped it using his hands before looking at me not in a furious way... But he was looking at me more like amused or something.
“Why did you do that?” Freeda asked, still shock.
“He deserves it more than anyone else, Freeda,” I stated.
“You know what, if you really wanted to get my attention, Ms. Carter, you should stop being rude to me,” Tyler stated, winking and smirking at my direction.
“Really? Maybe you’re the one who always wanted to get an attention between the two of us. I’m not the one who has a messy family background in here... Maybe, you are seeking for popularity and attention here in our school because you couldn’t get it from your home... Am I right?” I raised one of my brows, looking at Tyler.
That statement of mine wiped those annoying smirk on his lips. He suddenly looked down, frowning as he realized that maybe I am indeed right. He clenched his fist, looking like he wanted to punch me straight in the face.
The whole school was staring at our intense confrontation, before Tyler harshly exhaled. He then walked away, before punching one of the lockers at the end of the corridor. The impact from that action of his caused to embossed a dent on that locker. Though I felt like I won against him, I still feel guilty seeing his hurt face earlier.
“I can’t believe you did that to him, Natalia...” Lia stated, before walking away together with Freeda and Elyzz who’s now glaring at me.
The students started to walked away towards the different direction, right after they’ve witness the confrontation of the year. Scott nudged me, and I looked up to him.
“I’m sorry about what happened to Nathan, Natalia. Though I think that you shouldn’t have done that to my cousin... I mean, I’m not getting on his side or anything... But you know what, that topic about him and his Dad is a very sensitive one for him...”
A pang of pain suddenly invaded my chest. What did I do? Did I just hurt Tyler’s feelings by saying those words? Scott patted my shoulder before sighing.
“But I guess we couldn’t turn back the time. For now, just stay away from my cousin...”
“S-Scott...” my voice trembled, fighting myself and the urge to cried out of guilt.
“Yeah?”
Scott lifted my chin up, before looking at me straight in the eyes. When he noticed that I’m on the verge of crying, worried suddenly invaded his face as he wiped the tears forming at the corners of my eyes.
“Hey, please don’t cry, Nat. It wasn’t your fault. You don’t know anything and besides, you’re only defending our friend.”
“Yeah... Believe me, I know that. It’s just that... I feel bad for Tyler...”
“That’s enough. Stop thinking about that already. For now, let us just wait for the update about Nathan.”
I nodded, before walking with him towards the exit of our campus. I guess I’ll just have to endure this guilt for a moment.
