THE LETTER'S UNIDENTIFIED SEQUEL Amanda Lawson looked tall, serious, and stylish as she set the table, tossed a salad, and glanced into the oven at the breakfast she had prepared. She was wearing a white blouse and black jeans, and she was twenty-seven. She looked like Lena Duchaness from The beautiful creatures movie with her blue eyes and her long, curly brown hair, which she had knotted into a sleek bun. She sighed and sat down quietly in one of the kitchen chairs.
While sitting, she remembered that she was leaving today, so she thought of packing her things after the salad was cooked in the oven.
She arranged the clothes and put them in the small pink suitcase. After packing, she put makeup on her face. She used to put on makeup before leaving the house. After beautifying herself, she first sat at her table, which was near the window. She looked around, and she could see the sea on the other island. Whenever she was not happy, she visited the beach and saw the beautiful scenery, the sun rising on the top of the mountain every morning, birds flying on the beach, and the sweet breeze that relieved her sadness.
Their house was next to the beach. She remembered the times she spent with her mom, Kayla, and how much they were together and called each other “partners in life." They go gardening, fishing, and hanging out in the garden and on the beach every weekend. She noticed Mommy Kayla's beautiful flower garden and the hammock where they often hang out, and she remembered something from the past.
“Good afternoon, mommy; you're just here in the garden; that's why you're not there inside the house. Are you waiting for the sunset?”
"Yes, my little Amanda, sit next to me. How are your studies?”
"Mommy, it is very easy, and science is my favorite subject.”
“Really!" "What do you want when you grow up, dear?”
“I want to study computer engineering; I'm interested in new technology, mommy.”
“I'm always proud of you, dear, and I'm here to support you in your dreams." "Mommy loves you very much.”
"I love you too, mommy."
"My sweet little Amanda, won't you be angry with me when you grow up and you might discover new things about our lives?" Mommy Kayla asked seriously.
"What do you mean, mom?"
"Why should I be angry, mommy? You gave me life, and you gave birth to me. I know that Daddy is there with another family. You are my father and mother. If one day Daddy comes looking for me, I won't hold a grudge against him; there are reasons why he needed to let go. I will never be angry with you, mommy. Why did you ask that, Mommy? Is there something I should know?"
"Ah, there is nothing, dear, ahm, let's go for a walk on the beach; the sun is about to set."
They stood on the hammock and went to the beach. They witnessed a lovely sunset and birds flying along the shore. She remembered mommy Kayla's smiles and laughter every time they bonded. As she remembered all that, she was moved to tears, but she thought about why her mommy had asked before. She was only twelve years old when her mother asked her. TWO WEEKS AGO.
Her mommy, Kayla, wrote on the back of the photo.
"Amanda, I wrote the address here on the back of the photo and will look for your... Mommy Kayla's letter had no continuation.
Amanda came from work; she worked for an IT company, and she got home at 5:30 p.m. As she entered the door, she used to call her Mommy Kayla, but she still didn't hear her, and she said her name several times but no one answered. She went to the kitchen, the restroom, and Mommy Kayla's room, and she left the house first before going up to her room and looking around, and she went to the shore hoping to see Mommy Kayla, but she didn't see her. She thought of going upstairs, but only her room was there. Their house was not very big, but it was nice and concrete. Amanda slowly went upstairs because she was tired of walking around, and when she arrived at the door of the bedroom, she opened it and saw Mommy Kayla holding a ballpoint pen and a photo.
“Mommy, I've been looking for you for a while now; I didn't expect you to be here, because I don't see you hanging out in my room,” Amanda said, but her mommy Kayla had no reaction.
She thought that she was really asleep because that's how her mommy sleeps, so she went to the wardrobe first and took the house clothes and changed her clothes. After putting on her clothes, she came to her mommy and just looked at her for a while, then went downstairs to cook dinner in the kitchen. Before she started cooking, she played the CD player, and she played the song “How Deep is Your Love” because that was her mommy's favorite.
She was already cutting vegetables and preparing spices to put in the chicken while she was cooking, and she sang along.
"I know your eyes in the morning sun I feel you holding me in the pouring rain And the moment you walk away from me, I want to feel you in my arms again and you come to me in the summer breeze. Keep me hot with your love, then you slowly leave. And I'm the one you have to show, How deep your love is, how much..."
“Why did the CD player die?" Is it broken? Too bad I'm already in the chorus.
She went to the living room to check the CD player.
"Come on! How is this possible to fix? Mommy is going to scold me!"
Suddenly a glass fell on the table when no one else was there, and she wondered why it fell, but she didn't give it a meaning—maybe it was just wind. She cleaned the broken glass and put it in a cardboard box and put it in the trash.
She continued cooking, and suddenly she felt something cold collide with her body, then disappear for about four seconds. She thought maybe it was just the wind.
"What is that?"
She finished cooking and served it on the table so that she and her mother could eat. She said to herself, "Why did it take so long for her mommy to wake up? Maybe she was tired from doing the laundry."
She went upstairs to the bedroom and tried to wake up her mother.
"Mommy? Mommy? We are going to eat now! Oh, mommy still wants to sleep!" She called her mother in a soft voice.
She was wondering, and it still didn't wake up, so she tried to shake it lightly, but there was no response, and the skin seemed lifeless, and it was already cold. She touched the wrist, and it had no pulse and was not breathing. She tried to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but still nothing.
"Mommy, wake up! Mom? Mommy! Get up! Let's eat!” She shouted after crying.
"I have no one to be with, mommy, wake up there!" She started crying because she didn't have a mommy to be with and because she didn't have any other family.
"Mommy, go back to your body!" She screamed and kept crying, begging to wake up.
"I don't want to lose you, mommy!"
She pulled out her cellphone from her pocket, was panicking, and called her boyfriend, James.
"Babe! Come here! Mommy doesn't want to wake up. Mommy is dead.”
"Wait, babe, I'm coming!"
She called her friends.
She looked at what mommy was holding—a picture of a woman with an address written on the back. She did not know any of her mommy's relatives, and she wondered who she would look for.
A few minutes later, the four friends—Kitty, Lara, Mike, Jason, and her boyfriend James—arrived.
She showed her friends a photo of the woman with an address written on it, but the letter was broken, and she didn't know what her mommy Kayla was supposed to say.
"Does your mommy have a brother or sister?" asked James.
"Mommy is telling me that her sister lives in a faraway place, and I just don't know the exact address," Amanda answered James.
"Maybe this is her sister Amanda, and maybe you should go to the address that is written," said Kitty.
"Maybe your mommy will write something on the back of the picture, but she reached the point where she lost her life. Just try to go, Babe, and I will join you," said James.
Amanda cried and was very sad because her dearest mommy, Kayla, was no longer there to stand as a mother and father. Her boyfriend hugged her.
“Sshh... Hold on, we are just here and your friends," said James.
"Yes, Amanda, no matter what happens, we and your friends will never leave anyone behind. If you have a problem, just call us," said Kitty.
"We are friends; we will empathize and work together. We used to be in college, and we are still together," Lara said.
They had a group hug, and Lara felt sorry for her.
They took care of her mom's burial with the help of friends and neighbors who attended the funeral.
